Example
Consideringtheequation
q(x, y) = x

wefirstcalculatetheassociatemainmatrix.
Inthiscase,

det(A

= x
2x = x(x 2)
Thereforeitiseasilyseenthatitsrootsare0and2.
Therefore,wearefacedwithacasewhereintheproductoftheeigenvaluesiszero,andasthereisnolinearterminy ,wehave
thethirdreducedform.So,thepolynomialhastheform
q(x, y) = 2x
+ 2x + 1 = 0
Completingthesquares,weseethat

Finally,dividingtheequationby2,thecanonicalequationbecomes

Giveanaffineclassificationforthefollowingconic:
q(x, y) = 3x
+ 3y
6xy 6x + 4y 8 = 0
WestartbycalculatingitsmainmatrixA :
= [
det(A
xI ) = x
6x
Assoonaswecalculatedthemainmatrixoftheconicanditsassociatedcharacteristicpolynomial,wearegoingtocalculateits
roots(theeigenvalues).
Therefore,therootsofthetypicalpolynomialare:1
= 6
and2
= 0
Therefore,ourconicisgoingtobeoftheform
q(x, y) = 6x
6x + 4y 8 = 0
Sinceweonlyhaveaquadraticterminx andithaslineartermalso,wewillneedtocompletethesquarestoeliminatethis
term.
Then,doingthechangeofvariablex
1
= x
,theconicalbecomes
q(x, y) = 6x
19
4y
= 0
2
Asweonlyhavequadratictermforx ,thisisaparabola.
