Worksheet 4. Reading: Thunder and Lightning
Read the passage. Complete the sentences below the passage. Circle the correct
completion.

Thunder and Lightning

You see lightning. You hear thunder. Is the lightning near you or far
from you? You can figure it out. Use this information:
Sound travels through air at around 350 meters per second, or 1,200
feet per second. Thats a fact. So, sound travels at a speed of 1
kilometer in three seconds, and 1 mile in five seconds.
When you see a flash of lightning, you can start counting the seconds.
The number tells you how far away the lightning is. For example, if there are ten seconds
between the lightning and the thunder, the lightning is 2 miles or 3 kilometers away. If
there are five seconds between the lightning and the thunder, the thunder is 1 mile or 1.5
kilometers away. If there is one second between the lightning and the thunder, you are
right in the middle of a storm.

1. Lightning is _______.

b. a sound

5. Speed means _______.

2. Thunder is _______.
