TORQUE MEASUREMENT FOR VARIOUS HUB-ON-SHAFT

FRICTION JOINTS
1. OBJECTIVES: It is well-known that friction joints calculation is dependent on the estimation of
friction coefficients. The objective of the experiments is to measure transmitted torque for two typical
friction joints (Tapered Shaft respectively Tapered Ring Joint) and compare with predicted values
2. TEST RIG DESCRIPTION:

Fig. 2. Tapered Rings Joint.

Fig. 1. Tapered Shaft (similar to Cone Clutch):

D=43mm, d=33mm, =9.5, dm=(D+d)/2, l=30 mm

D=55mm, d=35mm, l=10mm, =30

3. THEORETICAL BASIS
Tightening torque-axial force relationship: Fax =

2M tot

,
d 2 tg ( + * )
where Mtot total tightening torque measured with torque indicator handle wrench
*=6 (corresponding to *=0.1), d2=15mm, =2.5

Friction transmitted torque axial force (preload) theoretical relationships:

c Fax d m
Tapered shaft: M ttaper =
2(sin + cos )

r Fax d tan

=
tan + 2 r 2 tan + 2 r

z 1

, z=2 (number of ring pairs)

Tapered Ring Joint:

c and r are friction coefficients for tapered shaft joints respectively tapered ring joint. For the
estimation of the friction transmitted torque a value of 0.1 for each may be realistic.

4. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
Determination of the transmitted friction torque for each
joint for various preloads (axial forces) corresponding to
various tightening torques.
Mtexp =7000n [Nmm], n= number of gradations on the scale of the
