The environment where we live in has drastically changed for the past million of
years. The effects of such change are highly evident, starting from the extinction of
dinosaurs and to the massive change in the landscape of the different flora and faunas
of the earth. Hence forth, it had brought about deluge and catastrophes, eccentric
weather condition and patterns. Whereas, with this evident alteration in climate, people
should be aware of what types of environmental problems our planet is currently facing.
One of the greatest environmental problems in our time we are facing is global
warming. The rise in earths surface temperature as a consequence of greenhouse
effect is called Global Warming. The greenhouse gas such as carbon-dioxide and other
pollutants absorbs more heat from the sun then it radiates back. This causes an
increase in the intensity of heat in atmosphere. Over the past century the planet has
warmed up significantly. Scientists have studied how fast the earth is heating up, and
have seen the effects it has on agriculture and the climate.
Population growth is responsible for global warming in many ways. We are
utilizing the technologies, burning fossil fuels, coal, lubricate, and gas. A big portion of
carbon emission is related to the burning of gasoline in internal-combustion motor of
automobiles. Besides, Sulphur cluster gas has the destructive impact on environmental
pollution and liable for 30% of global warming. When we cook food, we produce a huge
amount of C02.
Many researchers believe that excessive emissions of carbon dioxide, as well as
other greenhouse gases have a heating impact on the environment and that is very
harmful to human existence. Many problems might result from global warming and one
of the utmost problems is increasing sea level.
If Global warming continues the world would be in danger. The major effects and
impacts of Global Warming are:
1. Climate Change: Global warming is causing climate change. The worlds is
becoming warmer and warmer. There is also prediction of regional climate
changes along the ecosystem. As we can observe now a days even scientist
cannot predict the coming of typhoons and other calamities because of sudden
change in our climate scheme.
We have released so much carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that our
planet's atmosphere is now like a thick, heat-trapping blanket. By disrupting the
atmospheric balance that keeps the climate stable, we are now seeing extreme
effects around the globe. It's like a thermostat that's gone haywire it just
doesn't work the way it should. The result: The climate changes and it gets
warmer. Extreme weather events also become more common.
2. Water Balance: Although changes in sea-level have received much publicity,
problems of water availability are likely to be more serious and perhaps more
expensive to solve. In future, warmer world will face water crisis in some parts
while in other regions it will be wetter than it is now.
There is uncertainty regarding regional forecasts of future precipitation as
warming of globe makes it difficult to predict. Also, pattern of agricultural
changes, or effects on ecosystems in general are fairly unpredictable.
3. Human Health: The human health is put at risk because of Global warming. In
recent years, there have been newer reports of spread of major tropical diseases
with changing climate. As the earth becomes warmer, more and more people are
likely to be affected by tropical diseases.
The effects of global warming are tremendous, and if people do not begin to do
something about it, global warming could lead to the end of the world as we know it.
The problem of Global Warming can be controlled by minimizing the emission of
greenhouse gases into the environment. The following preventive steps would help
save the earth from the harmful effects of Global Warming.
1. Laws. The Laws that governs pollution and greenhouse gases should be
followed. We have different types of laws that protect the environment from
unlawful environmental practice. As a matter of facts these laws are the basis of
so many reforms and programs in rehabilitation of our environment. We have
Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act No. 9003),
Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (Republic Act No. 9147),
Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 (Republic Act No. 8749), Coconut Preservation
Act of 1995 (Republic Act No. 8048) and others.
2. Reduction in thermal power generating stations. Reduced dependence on
thermal power for our electricity need would help towards reducing the quantity if
carbon dioxide in the environment. The use of fossil fuels for generating
conventional energy is a major of greenhouse gases. We should avoid building
more industries that produces large amount of carbon dioxide. We should favor
