Compare and Contrast Roman and Greek Mythology

Roman and Greek Mythology are both so diverse with all the different Gods and beliefs
they both have. Some could even say that it is a different way to look at our world. There are
more things that are different than the same because they are from different time periods. Now
there are still many things in common between the two. They are both great pieces of work in the
way they were told and the content it contains. Even though Roman and Greek Mythology was
not created at the same time, they are almost the same mythology. The way this happened was
because Roman Mythology adopted the ideas they used from Greek Mythology that was created
almost one thousand years before and paraphrased those ideas as their own. (1,2)

There are many differences because they were created almost five hundred years apart.
Greek mythology talks more about tales of the unexplainable but the Roman mythology is made
up of many battles, fights, and stories between immortals. Another big difference is the time
period that they were both created. They were created about one thousand years apart. They were
both created for different reasons. The Greek Mythology is an unknown but we do know that the
people of Rome made the Roman mythologies. Their main goal was for it to be their religion but
it ended up being adopted by the Greeks for a different reason than that. The Roman Mythology
ignores the thought of mortality and they think that life after death is very important. Finally, the
looks of the Gods were very important of the Greek but the Roman Gods did not have actual
appearances or actual personalities. The looks and personality had to be inferred by the reader or
listener. (1,2)

In conclusion, Roman and Greek Mythology has many similarities and differences even
though they were written in two different time periods. The fact that they could be somewhat
similar is very remarkable to me. (1,2)
The Roman God Neptune

The Roman God Neptune is the God of the Sea. He has two brothers, Jupiter, and Pluto.
There is a Greek God that is like Neptune but not exactly alike the Greek God Poseidon. He was
originally associated by fresh water and the God Oceanus was the god of the Ocean. He was also
worshipped as the God of Horses and had a role of causing earthquakes. He had a temple near
the race tracks in Rome called the Circus Flaminius as well as the Campus Martius. The
Neptunalia was only observed at the latter temple on July 23. He was a caretaker of the Oracle at
Delphi before Apollo took over as the caretaker. They both worked very closely in all the realms.
Apollo authorized people to be able to go out and settle from Delphi while Poseidon watched
over all the colonists on their way out. Now this was all based off the Roman mythology of
Neptune. (3)
His mythology was that like his brother he was swallowed his father. After they were
saved he, his brothers and sisters and his father overthrew the God Cronus and the other titans.
After all of this, the world was divided into three and Neptune got the sea. (3)

Christians view of

Paganism

This is a very difficult question. The pagans and the Christians had things in common like
the holidays they celebrated and the rituals that they did on those holidays. For example, for
Halloween they had Jack o lanterns and they also celebrated Christmas but just in a different
way. (4,5)
Rome and the early Christians had a relationship forming. The Romans appreciated the
new religion that was forming. They also appreciated that it could be supervise and potentially
dangerous. Long after the religion was created, persecution started in 64 AD. with Neros bloody
repression. But the biggest and first real recognition was an inquiry by emperor Domitian who
sent investigators to Galilee to inquire on his family. (4,5)
Toward the end of the first century A.D. the Christians severed all their ties with the Jews
and made itself independent. After this, Christianity was a very unknown religion. But during
the second century A.D. Christians were persecuted for all their beliefs. Finally, in A.D. 165
through 180 there was a great persecution of the Christians under the power of Marcus Aurelius.
These also included the terrible acts committed on the Christians of Lyons in 177. (4,5)
In conclusion, the Christians view on the Roman religion was not very good. They were
persecuted by the Pagans because of what they believed and because of what they taught. Finally

because of all the persecution, it made their relationship with each other a very unhealthy
relationship. (4,5)
