Literary Analysis

The Poem A poison Tree contains a very serious meaning about hatred. Anger is
a very prominent emotion displayed throughout the poem which is used to express the
intensity. William Blake, the author of the poen uses symbolism, imagery, figurative
language, and theme to draw the writing together for menaing.
The most important symbol in the poem is the apple. The apple resembles the
growth of hatred for this foe. During the poem, he grows his hatred for his foe. during the
poem he grows his hatred through the sunshine during the day which eventually grew
into the poisoned apple. The sunshine brings me to the next important symbol displayed
through the poem: Daytime and Nighttime. The time of the day plays a key role in the
poem. He talks about the time and says that he feeds his anger sunshine during the
daytime. This is symbolic for the continuous hatred he is growing himself until he cant
possibly have more hatred, which lead to the development of his own remedy to heal: the
poisoned apple for his foe to eat.
Relating to the symbolic meaning comes imagery. The imagery of the bright
poisonous emphasizes the level of extent of how poisonous the apple grew to be. By
creating emphasis on the attractiveness the apple is, it creates the perfect effect of
intensity as for the level of a mix of fear and hatred. Another key imagery shown
throughout the poem is the line and I sunned it with smiles. This shows how the anger
and fear was kept beneathe the surface and the smiles are there in order to keep the
feelings hidden.
The figurative language in A poison Tree gives the poem emphasis. The first
figurative language statement was a personification. My wrath did grow, and my foe

beheld its shine, and he knew it was mine. This line of figurative language expresses
human characteristics to something that is not human. He is inferencing how his foe
knew the apple he grew is grown by himself and now his wrath physically grew, which
is not physically possible. A metaphor found in this poem is, And it grew both day and
night. This figure of speech is talking about his hatred, which is the apple.
The theme ties the whole poem together about anger. He is sp angry throughout
the poem, the anger kills his foe. It is so strong it ended his foe and ended his agony.
The poem A poison Tree entails many different expressions of hatred and pulls
together the theme of his true anger. The vivid imagery, figurative language and specific
wording accurately describes his side of the story and makes this poem have effective
emotion.
