The port handles coal from Indonesia's Tanjung Enim mine[2][3] and Omblin mine.[4]
In June 2015 a new US$152 million coal terminal owned by state-controlled coal miner Tambang Batubara
Bukit Asam (Bukit Asam) was inaugurated at the port. The Tarahan coal terminal expanded the port's
facilities to accommodate ships at a maximum capacity of 210,000 dead-weight tonnage (DWT), from the
previous 80,000 DWT. The maximum capacity of the terminal is scheduled to be enlarged to 240,000 DWT.
Bukit Asam now operates three quaysides at the Tarahan port.[5]
