Course Description
Examine the decision-making process by exploring theories in career development and
other factors such as familial, social, and cultural issues that influence career and lifestyle
choices. Utilize self-assessment inventories to identify individual interests, values, skills,
and personality types as they relate to career/college major options. Become familiar
with career development software, related technology and develop skills to enhance the
job search process.

Student Learning Outcomes:


1) Research and evaluate college major and career options while assessing multiple
factors in career development that include: personality traits, values, skills,
interests, attitudes and family & cultural influences. Demonstrate effective
decision-making skills by choosing a college major and career option that
complements the student's self-assessment.

Course Objectives:
By completing assignments and participating in all activities you will:
1) learn how to identify skills, interests, values, and aptitudes and their role in career
choice.
2) learn the importance of current, accurate and objective occupational information
in the career planning process.
3) learn the relationship between job, occupation, and career.
4) learn how college majors relate to different occupations and careers.
5) learn how to research occupations and careers using current information and
resources (eg. Specialized libraries, Department of Labor information, electronic,
Internet, etc...)
6) learn how to evaluate and integrate occupational information needed for career
planning.

7) acquire the skills essential to making wise, rational, and sound occupational
choices and to forming realistic career, educational and life goals.
8) learn the skills necessary to assess career choice and direction throughout the lifespan.
CLP 70 is a CSU transferrable class and can be used in Area E of the CSU GE pattern.

Course Requirements:
Writing Assignments:
There will be 10 short writing assignments throughout the quarter.

Occupational Research Project Guidelines:


The occupational research project will be the culminating project for the class. Using the
knowledge, you gained in the class, choose a prospective occupation that you think
would be suitable for you. The paper will be four to five pages in length, typewritten and
double-spaced. Students will be required to address the following regarding their chosen
occupation:
1) Nature of the work.
2) Educational and/or training requirements.
3) Skills and aptitudes required for the occupation.
4) Working conditions.
5) Salary range.
6) Job outlook.
7) Your personal thoughts on the occupation and why you think this is the right
occupation for you.
This assignment is worth 100 points and is due by 3/20/17.
Self-Assessment/Career Interest Inventory
Take three career/interest inventories. The list of career/interest inventories that you can
choose from is listed on Catalyst. Follow the directions for the inventories you want to
take. Reflect on the results of your inventories and write a page or two about your

personal thoughts. Were the results accurate of your interests, skills, and aptitudes? Any
surprises regarding your results?
A list of free career/interest inventories can be found on the Catalyst site for the class.

This assignment is worth 50 points.
Reading Assignments:
Weekly reading assignments will be assigned from the textbook and supplementary
reading material provided by the instructor
Mid-Term Exams:
There will be two mid-term exams. Each exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions
and will be worth 100 points. The midterm exams are open book and open notes. You
will have one hour to complete each mid-term exam.
Final Exam:
The final exam will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions and will be worth 200
points. The final exam will be open book and open notes. You will have two hours to
complete the exam. The final exam is cumulative, but emphasis will be on chapters 9
through 12.
Academic Integrity Policy:
Students will be expected to abide by De Anzas academic integrity policy which can be

of the terms of the policy may result in student being dropped from the class and referred
to the Dean for further disciplinary action.

Grading:
Grades will be assigned using the following criteria:

Letter grades will be based on the total number of points accumulated, and assigned using
the following scale:
A= 675 points or more
B= 600 674 points
C= 525-599 points
D= 450 524 points
F= 449 points or fewer
There will be several opportunities to earn extra credit throughout the quarter. Number of
points possible for each extra credit opportunity will be announced along with the terms
of the assignment.
