How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Nelly lives in the woods alone and collects butterflies for company. She has a book about
them that she ticks of the ones she has in. She is sitting around a fire and we can see her
collection in the background. This stands out as it is brightly coloured while the rest of the
forest in darkly coloured. The shot begins as an establishing shot then zooms in on Nelly into
a long shot of her. The camera then pans across to her collection. We also see the book
next to the collection. We then see the book from Nellys point of view as the camera pans
down the page to show the ticks next to the pictures. There is a picture at the bottom of the
page with no tick next to picture. There will be a close up of Nellys face as she looks down
at the book before a long shot of her closing the book. Nelly wanders into the forest and
away from the camera in search of the butterfly. After looking around she notices something
on a branch so stops and looks up at it. The butterfly is on the branch and then flys away.
Nelly watches it fly above her before it lands on her arm. There will be close ups of the
butterfly flying then a mid shot of Nelly as it lands on her arm. Then a close up as it flys away
again. Nelly follows it away again. From behind we see Nelly reach out to catch it. From the

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

front we see the butterfly in her hands. There will then be a close up of the butterfly in a high
angle from Nellys point of view and then an extreme close up of Nelly in a low angle from
the butterflys point of view. She then looks between her collection and the butterfly in her
hands as she realises that shouldnt keep them all captive just because shes lonely. She
lets it go and the camera pans up to follow it until it flys out of shot. She walks back to her
collection and lets them go and they fly out of shot. Nelly sits back down next to the fire and
looks down. The shot of Nelly looking down will be a close up on her face. The shot will then
pan out as the butterfly flys onto the log where Nelly is sitting. Nelly looks at it a smiles as
the shot fades to black.

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

I will make sure that the animation is the required length-at least a minute. It will feature two
characters to fit to the brief. I will make use 18 frames a second to make the animation
smoother than it would be at 12 fps so that it fits in with the brief that states that it needs to
be more than 12 frames per seconds. My animation will be completed the 6th of January as
this is the deadline. As my brief states children aged 7-12 as my target audience I will make
sure to aim it towards this age range with childish characters. I will use plasticine to make my
characters.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
To make the set in a box I would use scissors which could cause injury, so I will need to be
careful when using them. I will use lights to light the set and these could get hot so I would
need to be careful not to touch them when hot. When making the set I will use hot glue to
stick the pieces down to the box so I will need to be careful when using it. The cable from the
light is a trip hazard so I will be careful not to trip over them.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
To avoid legal issues, I would use royalty free music so that there were no copyright issues.
My video is aimed at children so there will not age restrictions so the video must be suitable
for all ages. To avoid plagiarism, I will make sure that I am not copying work that is already
out there. I can search for similar work online to make sure I am not copying some other
work.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Use of possible formats

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
time lapse photography
plasticine animation
Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

I will model the plasticine to create the characters in my video. I think this is a good idea as
there are a lot less limitations as I can choose the colours and look of my characters.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
I will use armatures underneath the plasticine and will mix colours to create the colour I
want. To make grey I will mix white and black and to get brown I will mix orange and black.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
I will be limited to making characters that I can make with no experience in clay modelling.
They could also be fragile so I will use armatures to make them more sturdy. The box will
also cause limitation as the space will be limited. This means that the box I use must be big
enough to fit the set in and characters. The characters must also be big enough that they are
easy to move but small enough to fit. The plasticine will go hard when it gets cold so I will
animate it soon after making the characters.

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

This is set in a forest and lights are used within the set
rather than just to light the set. I like this idea so have
taken the idea to use fairy lights in my animation. The set
is detailed while the character is simple. I like the look of
this animation as it seems close and warm because of the
orange lights and brown trees.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6b-dLM5yfE
This is a music video with a stop motion video. I
like the trees as they are made of real sticks so I
am going to use this idea for my set. I dont
however, like the cool colours so I will use warm
colours for my set.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa5Fyd1a2AQ
I like the colours used in this as they are
dark and dull but still coloured. I will use
this technique by using colours but mainly
dull colours. I also like the cutsy look of
the characters as theyre round with big
eyes.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
The subject of my animation will be Nelly. She lives in a forest and collects colourful
butterflies and flowers.

Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
Nelly looks through her book of butterflies and flowers, many of which are ticked off as she
has collected them. Then she gets to one that she does not have in her collection so she
goes looking for it in the forest. She finds it in a tree and chases it trying to catch it. When
she finally does catch it, she looks at it and realizes that it is cruel to keep them in her
collection so releases them. Delilah then comes back and sits with Nelly.

Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
The main character will be Nelly and Delilah. Delilah is the main butterfly that Nelly tries to
catch for her collection. There will be other butterflies in the background that fly away at the
end when they are released.

Add in images and drawings/ sketches of what they will look like.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What will they be made of?

Wire skeleton of Nelly with clay build around it using thread for hair and a felt dress. Delilah
has a wire skeleton and is made of clay/tissue paper.

Movement of characters

How are you going to make your characters move?

I am going to build a skeleton from wire and then build clay around it so that they are more
stable when they move. I will then be able to move the arms and legs individually as well as
at the elbows and knees.

What is the purpose of an armature?

Armatures are used as skeletons for clay models. They help to make the models more
secure so that they can stand and move without falling over. The also make the models
more rigid than they would be if they were just clay as when moved the wire of the armature
will hold the model there; whereas without the clay may droop as it is not strong enough to
hold the position.

Will you use them for your characters?

Yes, as it will make them more secure and stable to move.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

If so, how will you make it?

I will use wire to make the basic shape of the character and will then build the clay around it
to create the character.

Mood board
Create a mood board showing what look your animation will have. Add images showing
ideas of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be present in the
different shots.

Will your set be;

A three wall set

A blue/green screen

An existing location

A Combination of two or more of the above

Draw sketches of how your sets/backgrounds will look. Add in labels to your diagrams and
details of locations / lighting etc.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Audio and Soundtrack

What audio will you have for your animation?
For my animation I will be using royalty free music so that there are no copyright issues. I will
use a fire sound effect when Nelly is near the fire. I will be using a slow instrumental in the
background of the start of the video. When she releases the butterflies I will use the fire
sound effect and nothing else as the lack of music will emphasis how lonely she is without
them. When Delilah comes back to sit with Nelly there will be happy music as she is not
lonely anymore.
Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.
I will use royalty free music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hBgKOKXSWA
What actions will need sound effects?
The fire will have a sound effect.
Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

Audience
Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender

Age
7-12

Interests
Fantasy, nature

What forms of animation might they already watch?

Claymation and CGI

What images do you think they enjoy watching?

Frankenweenie, Wallace and Gromit, Shrek, Corpse Bride

What might they consider distasteful or offensive?

They might find swearing and violence distasteful or offensive so I will not include this in my
production as it would not be suitable for children, which is my target audience.

How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
It will have a happy ending as this will appeal to a younger audience. The fantasy story will
also appeal to a young audience.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
On line as many children watch videos online now so I think showing it on this platform
would reach the widest audience.
I recorded a focus group to determine the target audience for my video. The people in my
focus group thought that because the story was simple and had a happy ending.

Frame Rates
What is the duration of your animation in minutes? (minimum 30 seconds)
My animation will be a minute long
In seconds?
60 seconds

How many frames per second for video?

I am going to use 18 fps so that the video looks smooth.

There are 60 seconds in a minute. How many frames (ie. Individual photos) will you
need to take?
1080

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

I will film my animation at home in my room as there is the least amount of light getting into
that room.

Does it have natural daylight?

Yes so I will need to block this out using thick curtains and closing all doors.

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

I would need to block it out and use artificial light so that the lighting is consistent throughout
the production, whereas natural lighting would change throughout the day as the sun moves
changing the lighting in each picture and creating flickering in the final video.

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

I will use a lamp to light my set as well as using fairy lights as part of the set.

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
I will point the lamp at the set so that the trees cast shadows, the lamp will also not be too
close to the set so that the light isnt too harsh. The fairy lights will be used as part of the set.
I will use the lights to imitate a camp fire and lights through the trees.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

(LO3)

Frame numbers
You will need to label your images as frames
The first 24 frames will be written as;
0_1
0_2 etc etc

the following 24 will be

1_1
1_2
1_3
Ensure your clips are labeled as such. Screen shot the folder your clips are in, and copy the
image underneath.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For
example;

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
