THIRD YEAR AERO B
Date: 12.11.2009 (AN)
Time: 3 Hrs.
Marks: 50 marks
(Note: Use of Gas Table and non-programmable scientific calculator is allowed.)
PART-A (7x2=14)
1. Draw the pressure distribution on the upper and lower surface of the biconvex airfoil facing a
supersonic flow and colour the area which gives lift.
2. Draw a double diamond airfoil in a supersonic flow and give all the turning angles when angle of
attack is more than any of the wedge angle.
3. Give reason for Mach reflection and draw a simple case of Mach reflection in pressure turning
angle column diagram.
4. Explain why we get shock in the case of compression waves and not in the case of expansion
wave.
5. Write prandtl Glauerts rule stating relation between compressible and the incompressible flow
parameters. What happens to the coefficient of pressure when angle of attack remains same in
both the flow field?
6. Define critical Mach number. Show the case when flow over an airfoil is about to get separated
due to lambda () shock appearance.
7. Draw a simple case of expansion fan getting reflected from an yielding boundary.
(Answer any three) PART-B (3 X 12=36)
1. Draw a picture showing shock interacting with another shock of the opposite family and different
strength by showing the entire flow region Mach numbers and the angle involved.
4
For the flow field shown in the figure below determine , , if = . = .
2

PTO

2. Tabulate the five basic differences between Oblique Shock wave and Normal Shock wave.
4
Sketch a case of regular reflection with supersonic downstream flow depicting the position of
incident and reflected shocks. Give their comparative data and show them in pressure turning
angle column graph.
8
3. Write formula for coefficient of pressure as per Ackerets rule and give the convention for turning
angle.
4
Take a simple case of double diamond airfoil in supersonic flow with zero degree angle of attack.
Sketch the case showing position of shocks and expansion fans and derive the formula for
coefficient of lift and coefficient of drag.
8
4. Define stream function and give their mathematical definition.
4
Write potential flow equation for a compressible flow in subsonic region. Compare it with the
incompressible flow region potential flow. Take up a case of lambda () is equal to beta () and
explain the transformation result.
8
5. Why it is preferred to have many weak oblique shocks rather than having one normal shock to
compress the air for the same compression ratio? Explain in details in your own language.
4
In the figure given below there are two cases to get the similar compression ratio between free
stream and final stream. Find the total pressure loss in both the cases and compare the results
while it is given that = . , = = .
