ASIAN INSTITUTE OF MARITIME STUDIES

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research design, population, samples and sample
technique, research instrument, and the procedure for data gathering is briefly
discussed in this chapter.

Research Design
Descriptive-correlational was made used as the design in determining the
relationships between and among two or more variables which is the academic
performance of the students and the teaching styles of the teachers. This design
used descriptive-correlational since it gives broad and in-depth description of the
relationship between the academic performance of the students and teaching style
of the teachers.
Population, Samples and Sampling Technique
The respondents for this research are the 2 nd year maritime student during the
first semester of the school year 2016-2017. The outcome of this study will be
achieved after the researchers have gathered the data. The researchers will use the
simple random sampling to determine the samples of the study. This type of
probability sampling is where each member of the population has an equal chance
to be included in the study.

Research Instrument
The Instrument used in this research is the Teaching Style Inventory
adopted from Anthony F. Grasha and Sheryl Riechmann-Hruska. The questionnaire
is a 40-item survey consists of scenarios that represent the five teaching style theory
of Grasha and Riechmann. A modified version of this questionnaire is provided to 2 nd
year students to determine their instructors teaching style. A five point Likert Scale
was used for respondents to gauge their teachers application of the stated teaching
styles. The questions are answered using the choices 1- strongly disagree to 5strongly agree. The Initial part of the questionnaire is to determine the demographic
profile of the respondents as to their gender and age.
Data Gathering Procedure
After the validation of the questionnaire, the researchers wrote a letter
addressed to the Department head of Marine Transportation asking permission to
conduct a survey to the 2nd year students. The Data will be gathered this 2 nd
semester 2016-2017 using the adopted questionnaire of Grasha and Reichmann.
The academic performance of the students will be based on the final grade
they earned during their 1st semester in school year 2016-2017. The source of the
grades will be in the MT Department which most of all maritime students grades are
kept. Upon the completion of the survey, each questionnaire will be gathered and
compiled to be analysed for the final data.

Statistical Treatment of Data
The Researchers will be using the following:
Frequency and Percentage. Frequency is the organization of value in
descending order that showed the number of occurrences each value was
obtained. Percentage is the proportion of frequency over the sample size
multiplied by 100.

P=

f
n

x 100%

Where:
P - Percentage
N - Number of respondents
F - Frequency
Weighted mean. Is a kind of average. Instead of each data point contributing
equally to the final mean, some data points contribute more weight than others.
This will used in problem 1 and 2.
Weighted Mean =

fx/f

Where:
f= number of frequency
x= weight
