Submitted to: Dr. Leela Manohar

(d) Flow rate:

FA0=0.2(mol/lt) x 5(m3/sec)
FA0=0.2(mol/lt) x 5(m3/sec) x 1000 lt
FA0=1000(mol/sec)
For CSTR:
VCSTR= FA0 *(X2-X1) / (-rA)

. (i)

X1=0.7 & X2=0.9

Then using rate equation:
108
m3 . s
For X > 0.5:
=3+10( X0.5)
r A
mol
108
m3 . s
=3+ 10(0.90.5)
r A
mol
3
1
8 m .s
=710
r A
mol

Now from equation (i) we will get:

VCSTR =1000 x 0.2 x (7x108)

3
(VCSTR =1.4x1011 m )

(e)As we know ,
Batch reactant time:

t= -{1/(rAV)}NA1NA0 dNA
or t= -{1/rAv}(NA0-NA1)
since conversion is 40% ,
NA1= 0.6 * NA0
t=-{1/rAv}(0.4*NA0)

10
=3 for x 0.
r A

t=(3*108*0.4*1000)/5
(t=2.4*1010sec)
8

(f)Graphical representation:
For X > 0.5:

108
m3 . s
=3+10( X0.5)
r A
mol

10
m .s
For X 0.5 :
=3
r A
mol

(g) The volume of the CSTR is very large, and to

construct a CSTR of such size is very costly, the
reaction rate is very low ,so to minimise the
economic cost reaction rate should be increased..
