Marks : 10 x 3 = 30
1. State Hookes law. Sketch the typical stress-strain curve for aluminum.
2. Mention the assumptions made in the theory of simple stress and strain.
3. Derive expressions for the hoop and longitudinal stresses in a thin cylindrical shell
subjected to an internal pressure P.
4. Find an expression for the strain energy stored in a body when the load is applied
suddenly.
5. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for a simply supported beam of
length L which is subjected to a clockwise couple M at the centre of the beam.
6. Define the terms: principal planes and principal stresses.
7. What is meant by section modulus? Find an expression for section modulus for circular
and hollow circular sections.
8. Draw the torsional shear stress distribution in a hollow shaft and arrange the following
section in increasing order of torsional stiffness. (Refer figure1)

9. What is Mohrs stress circle? How is it useful in the solution of stress analysis problem?
10. What is the difference between crushing and buckling failures of a column?
GROUP - II
Marks : 4 x 12.5 = 50
11. a) The rod is subjected to the axial force of 80 kN as shown in figure 2. The pin is made
of a material having a failure shear stress of 100 MPa. Determine the minimum
required diameter of the pin. Apply a factor of safety of 2.5 against shear failure. (5)
b) Define bulk modulus. Derive an expression for the youngs modulus in terms of the
bulk modulus and the Poissons ratio.

b) What is meant by simple bending? What are the assumptions made in the theory of
simple bending?
(5)
13. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam shown in figure 3.
14. a) The state of plane stress at a point is shown on the element in figure 4. Represent
this state of stress on an element oriented 30 counter clockwise from the position
shown.
