No name woman was written when Kingston was in America yet it

is all about her Chinese background. From her writing, Kingston

seems to know nothing about her own family history but only the
Chinese cultural legacy. Therefore, it is an interesting writing that
mixes fact and fiction. Through the portion of fiction in the story, it
shows how even though she is living in America, but there is no
feeling of strangers because the Chinese traditions still affect her
values.
As the title suggested, this chapter is about a woman without
identity. The actual details that Kingston knows are very little. From
the story, Remember Fathers drowned in the well sister? I cannot
ask that. we know that it is a taboo for Kingston to mention the
relationship of her aunt to their family. All these hint at the harsh
Chinese cultural legacy of fatality that decided adultery is a crime
rather than a mistake. Eventually, it led to her aunts death.
Comparing to contemporary society, especially in America, the
status of women is higher and they may get a wider range of love
freedom. We might hardly forgive a woman who commits adultery.
Yet, they at least would not be penalized by death. From Kingstons
words, The Chinese are always very frightened of the drowned
one. Kingston distance herself from traditional Chinese by using
the. She is different from Chinese thinking of ghost and kept
remembering her aunt by creating a story for her. Obviously, we see
a double consciousness in her writing.
Kingston paid efforts to visualize how her home should like through
Chineses strong belief in the completeness of family, that is the
homeland myth. In No name woman, symbols hint at the culture
hegemony in China. The round moon cakes and round doorways...
had lost their power to warn this family of the law: a family must be
whole, faithfully keeping the descent line by having sons to feed the
old and the dead, who in turn to look after the family. A complete
family is always of utmost importance to maintain the stability of
their lives. Then, Kingston cleverly manipulated this Chinese cultural
legacy to fill the pigeonholes of her aunts story. Kingston wrote
from the rigid Chinese mindset, trying to link the infidelity of her
aunt to the sudden attack of the villagers. Since the infidelity of her
aunt cannot fulfill the Chinese family function of giving offspring for
family, all the others eventually blamed the raid on her aunt.
So even though she has never seen China, we can already see that
she has a very strong Chinese consciousness, like an invisible
world around her, in her words. She has no memory in China. The
only possible way for her to sustain a family history is through
imagination.
