The twelve Bhavas or Houses
An individuals horoscope is divided into 12 Bhavas or houses, based on the position of ones lagna in the chart.
The nature and qualities of the rasis, planets and the nakshatras explained so far are their basic inherent
qualities. Once a persons chart is analyzed from the lagna point of view, based on the way these planets and
rasis are placed from lagna, gives them a personal touch and helps us to understand the various aspects and
events of ones life.
The sign in which your lagna or ascendant is placed becomes your 1st house. The sign next to that (clockwise in
the south chart and anticlockwise in a north chart), becomes your 2nd house. The one next to that is your 3rd
house and so on till the 12th house.

The 1st, 5th, and 9th houses are called Trikonas or trine houses. They are the most powerful and auspicious
houses. They are also called Lakshmi sthanas as the rule all kinds of prosperities.

The 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses are called Kendras or quadrants. They are also auspicious and powerful
houses next to the konas.
The 3rd and the 11th houses are called Upachayas or houses of growth.
The 6th, 8th, and 12 houses are called Dusthanas or bad houses.

1, 5, and 9 are Dharma houses.

2, 6, and 10 are Artha houses.
3, 7, and 11 are Kama houses.
4, 8, and 12 are Moksha houses.
The 12 houses and what they signify and represent in your life.

The First house or Lagna called Tanu sthana, represents your birth, body looks and soul, personality traits and
inclinations, longevity, health, character and nature. It also rules your head the head, longevity, health, character
and nature of the native. It is a kendra a trikona and Dharma bhava, and it is at the same time . It is one of the
most important and auspicious house in the horoscope.
If you don't know your Lagna click here to use onsite instant calculator
The Second house called Dhana sthana, represents your wealth, speech, family, face, right eye, mouth and the
food you eat and charity and death.
The Third house called Bhatru sthana represents your younger brothers and sisters, courage, servants and
subordinates, communications, talents and skills, sports, business, short distance travels.
The Fourth bhava called Matru sthana, represents mother, home, relatives, office or factory, emotions, domestic

The Fifth house called Putra sthana, represents children, education and intellect, creativity, mantra, tantra and

The Sixth house called Shatru sthana, represents health, illness, injuries, loans, sports, maternal uncle, enemies
and opposition.
The Seventh house called Kalatra sthana, represents spouse, sex life, reproduction and genital organs, partners,
enjoyments and Kundalini shakti and death.
The Eight house called Ayu sthana, represents destruction, accidents, physical pains, inheritance, legacies,
death and insurance.
The Ninth house called bhagya sthana, represents luck, prosperity, guru, father, religious and spiritual progress
and knowledge of the scriptures, sadhana, pilgrimages, foreign travel and foreign trade, grandchildren.
The Tenth house represents your profession, business, authority and power and honours and achievements.
The Eleventh house represents gains and income, good news, money, elder brothers and sisters, friends, long
distance travels, air lines and entertainment.
The Twelfth house represents losses, waste, expenses, foreign countries, imprisonment, death, sadhana and
Moksha or final liberation.

Each of the 9 different planets, while placed in the 12 different houses, produce different, and at times totally
opposite results. Again each of them produce some good results and some bad results. Remember this
important fact.

As there are 12 houses and only 9 planets, there will always be some vacant houses. In most horoscopes there
are more than one planet in a house. The lords of the rasis as mentioned earlier in lesson 1, i.e., Mars for Aries,
Venus for Taurus etc., become the lords of your houses falling in those rasis. Which house lord is placed in which
house is a very important factor. Again each house lord placed in the other houses has some good results and
some bad. Again because of the dual ownership rasis by planets, a planet placed in a particular house as lord of
one house may be good, but bad as lord of the other house.
This is the third important parameter to remember.
Let us see the example horoscope to make things clear.

Remember the house counting is done from the lagna, which is the 1st house.

Count clockwise

Count anti-clockwise
In this horoscope:

The lagna or the 1st house falls in Vrischika rasi or Scorpio. Scorpio is owned by Mars. So the lagna lord is
mars. He is placed in Gemini, the 8th house counted from lagna.( the counting starts from lagna)
The 2nd house is Dhanu or Sagittarius, its owner is jupiter. So the 2nd lord is placed in Libra, the 12th house
from lagna.
The 3rd house is Makara or Capricorn, owned by saturn, who is placed in Aries, the sixth house.
The 4th house is Kumbha or Aquarius, owned by saturn, who is placed in Aries, the sixth house.
The 5th house is Meena or Pisces, owned by jupiter, who is placed in the 12th house.
The 6th house is Mesha or Aries, whose lord mars is in the 8th house. You may interested to note that mars as
the important lagna lord placed in the 8th house is bad and inauspicious, but in the 2nd case as the owner of a
bad 6th house placed in another bad 8th house, he very good and auspicious.
The 7th house is Vrishabha or Taurus, whose lord venus is placed in the 8th house.
The 8th house is Mithuna or Gemini, whose lord is placed in the 6th house. (This is good)

The 9th house is Karka or Cancer, whose lord moon is in the 4th house.
The 10th house is Simha or Leo and the lord sun is in the 7th house.
The 11th house is Kanya or Virgo and the lord is in the 6th house. (This is bad)
The 12th house lord Venus placed in the 8th house.( Again note venus as the bad 12th lord in the bad 8th house
is good, but as the important 7th lord in the bad 8th he is bad)

For every lagna some planets are benific, some are malefic and some are neutral. Again how they are placed in
the chart is a very important point to be considered. however the following are the basic thumb rules:
Lords of 1,5,9 houses are always benefics.
Lords of 4, 7, 10 houses if placed in auspicious houses produce good results.
Lords of 6, 8, 12 house if placed in 6, 8, or 12 houses produce good results but are bad if placed in the good
houses.
2nd and 11th lords are better placed in the auspicious houses.

When two or more planets are placed in a house, it is called the conjunction of planets. The results of these
conjunctions of planets will depend on whether they are benefics or malefics from the lagna point of view. The
conjunction of the Kendra lords or the Kona lords or the Kendra or Kona lords is highly auspicious. These are
called Raja yoga combinations. The Raja yoga combinations give rise to authority, power, position and wealth.
However, if a dusthana lord. i.e., 6th, 8th or 12th lord joins them it spoils the rajayogas.
When two planets exchange houses, i.e., let us say Mars is in Venus house and Venus in in Mars house, it is
called Parivartana Yoga or Exchange Yoga. The Parivartana Yoga is a very powerful one. The Parivartana Yoga
becomes auspicious if the exchange is between two auspicious houses, i.e., between the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th,
9th, 10th and 11th houses. Similarly if two dusthana lords, i.e., 6th, 8th and 12th, exchange houses then also it is
auspicious. However, if a benefic house lord exchanges houses with a malefic house lord, like 9th lord with the
12th lord, then the exchange is inauspicious.
Similarly if exalted planets are placed in Kendras etc. it again causes Rajayogas. There are several hundred raja
yoga combinations mentioned in the Shastras.

The Dharma; The Purpose

The concept of dharma is deeply ingrained in Jyotish, or what is commonly called Vedic astrology. A correct
understanding of this concept is essential in properly comprehending ones vocational path. The word dharma
implies a fulfillment of honor and recognition according to ones inherent purpose. Dharma is the law of our
existence, the path of our destiny. The Vedas, the ancient spiritual scripture of India, speak of this: "There is
nothing higher than dharma. Verily, that which is dharma is truth."
According to ancient Vedic scripture, dharma operates on four levels; four levels of divine order within existence.
These are: universal dharma, social dharma, human dharma and personal dharma.
Universal dharma, or rita, is divine order, or the operation of a conscious cosmic law, regulating the natural world
of phenomena. The Vedas say: "Earth is upheld by truth. Heaven is upheld by the sun. The solar regions are
upheld by eternal laws, rita".
Social dharma, or varna dharma, consists of the complex social matrix of familial and vocational responsibility
within all human societies. The great Vedic sage Manu cognized that humanity naturally occurred in four states.
The brahmins, the kshatriyas, the vaishyas and the shudras. These are relatively speaking: the spiritual and
scholarly types, the administrative and executive types, the merchant and business types, the servant and
artisan types. Social dharma is realized in the fulfillment of our familial, communal and cultural responsibilities in
this world. Properly followed social dharma fuels the evolutionary progress of existence. The ancient Vedas say:

17

"When a person is born, whoever they may be, there is born simultaneously a debt to the Gods, to the sages, to
the ancestors, and to humanity."
Human dharma, or ashrama dharma, is the natural state of human existence, expressed in the four ashrams, or
stations of life. These four stages of human existence according to Vedic scripture are: the brahmacharya stage,
the grihastah stage the vanaprasta stage and finally the sannyasa stage. These stations of life are respectively: a
time of study, a time of work and family, a time of slow withdrawal from public life, and a final time of renunciation
to give ourselves back to the divine from which we came. The ancient Vedas say: "Pursuit of the duties of the
stage of life to which one belongs, that, verily is the rule."
Lastly, personal dharma, or swadharma, according to scripture is said to be determined by two forces; the
karmas of the past, and the three aforesaid dharmas of this life. Our past patterning mixes with the matrix of
universal, social, and human dharma and inexorably draw us toward the destiny of this life. Swadharma means,
"ones personal law". The Vedas say that the worship of the Hindu deity, Ganesha, the Vedic deity of dharma,
reveals ones personal law. This deity, Ganesha, governs the higher intellectual faculties of human
consciousness, and most importantly, for the purposes of this article, is the divine deity that specifically governs
astrology. The study of astrology is linked to an understanding of ones personal dharma! The ancient scriptures
further suggest that personal dharma can be determined by the right study of Jyotish, or Vedic astrology! We
have come full circle from the deities of the heavens, back to the astrological chart of terra firma to reveal our
personal purpose! The ancient scriptures say: Every person has his life designed beforehand; and the light of the
purpose he is born to accomplish in life has already been kindled in his soul!"
This Vedic concept of personal law, or swadharma, is deeply ingrained in the infrastructure of the Vedic
astrological chart. Like the four stages of human dharma, or ashrama dharma, the Houses of the astrological
chart are divided into four stations, or types, reflecting the four ends of human pursuit. In order, the four ends of
human pursuit are: dharma, artha, kama, and moksha. Respectively, these four pursuits of human existence are:
rightful fulfillment of personal law, rightful acquisition of personal resources, rightful fulfillment of desires, and
lastly liberation and emancipation from this world. You can see that this categorization is but a personal
microcosm of the stages of ashrama, or human dharma from start to finish!
The Bhavas; The Houses
The bhavas, or houses of the Vedic astrological chart are correspondingly arranged to reflect these four fruits of
personal existence. Houses 1, 5, and 9 are the dharma stations. Houses 2, 6, and 10 are the artha stations.
Houses 3, 7, and 11 are the kama stations. Lastly, Houses 4, 8, and 12 are the moksha stations. The rightful
pursuits of the field of human experience is completely contained within the bhavas!
The bhavas of the Vedic chart start with dharma. The first house initiates the cycle of dharma, artha, kama, and
moksha. The second bhava follows as an artha house. The third house follows as a kama house, and lastly the
fourth house completes the cycle as a moksha house. These stations repeat in the exact same order throughout
the twelve houses of the astrological chart.

18

The Vedic sages consider the trikonal houses, houses 1, 5, and 9 the most auspicious houses because they are
dharma houses. Think about it. What can be said of personal existence if it has no personal purpose, if it does
not follow swadharma, that is personal dharma! The human pursuit of artha follows dharma. Therefore, the
houses that follow the dharma houses are the artha houses. These are house 2, 6, and 10. Of what value is the
accumulation of resources without swadharma? What is the value of any material resource if you are ignorant of
its purpose? You will probably not be aware of its purpose according to rita, or universal dharma. Only the sages
and the Gods have this awareness. You may not be aware of its purpose according to varna dharma, or social
dharma. You may not be aware of its purpose according to ashrama dharma, or human dharma. But if you dont
know the purpose of your acquisitions according to swadharma, or personal dharma, then you have acquired
and accumulated what you posses in a profound state of ignorance! You have left yourself out of the loop of your
personal purpose!
Next to the trikonal houses the kendras, or the angles are said to be of auspicious import. The angles of course
are houses 1, 4, 7, and 10. As in western tropical astrology, these houses are the power centers of the chart.
Notice how both the first house and the tenth house are included in this grouping. These are respectively both a
dharma and an artha house, connected to the revelation of purpose and the material necessary to accomplish
this task. The first house pulls double duty as a trikonal and a kendra house; after all, it is chiefly indicative of self
and therefore the most powerful representative of the individual.
In Vedic astrology, the power of the trikonal and kendra houses increases throughout the house order. Of the
three trikonal houses, 1, 5, and 9; the ninth is the most powerful and auspicious of the dharma trines. It is a
house of supreme dharmic intent, known as bhagya bhava; the house fortune. Of the four kendras, houses 1, 4,
7, and 10; the tenth house is the most powerful and auspicious of the angles. As the most powerful angle in the
chart, the tenth house is known as karma bhava. The Sanskrit word karma means, action. The tenth bhava is the
house of action. It is where our deeds take place in the world. You may be well intentioned, but you will be known
by your deeds! Thats where the rubber meets the road!
The Yogas; The Planetary Unions
The planets that rule over the trikonal, or dharma houses, and the kendra houses are the most powerful planets
in the birth chart. Whenever a planet that rules a dharma house is connected with a planet that rules a kendra
house, a raja yoga manifests in the birth chart. A raja yoga means: a royal union. This category of raja yogas is
the most beneficial yogas of the birth chart. Think about the wisdom of the sages. The planets that rule the
dharma houses 1, 5, and 9, are associated with the fulfillment of your purpose. The planets that rule the kendras,
houses 1, 4, 7, and 10, are associated with the places of power in this life. Those places, of course, are; the self,
the family, relationship, and vocation. The association of planets bringing these great houses together is very
purposeful and powerful indeed. Whenever dharma is linked with the power to bring it forth in the world, this is a
very important for the evolutionary progress of the soul!
It is especially significant, purposeful and auspicious when planets are connected in some way that rule the most
powerful of the trikonal houses; the ninth house, and the most powerful of the kendra houses; the tenth house.

19

This is a raja yoga of supreme import. It is called dharma/karma yoga. It is the supreme yoga of purposeful,
fortunate action, for it involves bhagya bhava and karma bhava. What could be more illuminating to the self than
to reveal ones swadharma through right action in the world of manifestation. This is truly splendiferous, for it
involves all four levels of dharma aligning the evolving soul with the divine intent.
The planets that rule the ninth and tenth houses can be connected in a number of ways. They can be in
conjunction in the same sign, or they can be aspecting each other by opposition in opposite signs. Just like
western tropical astrology, Vedic astrology has a myriad of planetary aspects. Any good beginning book will
explain the aspects in great detail. I recommend Dr. K.S. Charaks, Elements of Vedic Astrology, and Bepin
Beharis, Fundamentals of Vedic Astrology. Planets can also be associated by mutual exchange, by being in
each others signs. In addition planets can be associated by being in each others Nakshatras, that is being in
each others lunar mansions. The Nakshatras are 27 in all, being 13 degree and 20 minute partitions of the signs
reflecting the Moons movement during the sidereal month. Again, the Nakshatras can be found in complete
detail in any good beginning book on Vedic astrology. Such a planetary combination producing a dharma/karma
yoga gives the potential to realize personal dharm through our actions in the world at large.
Karma Bhava; The House of Action
The tenth bhava, as previously explained, is known as karma bhava; the place of our action in the world. The
tenth bhava is described as the house of honor, sacred studies, virtuous deeds, and vocation. But it has another
special distinction in Vedic astrology. It specifically is the house that rules over dharma! In addition, the tenth
house is the only artha house, a house of acquired resources, that is a powerful angle. The specificity of dharma
and artha combined in the most powerful angle, give extraordinary import to the resources we acquire through
our vocation. Here we have the opportunity through rightful action to acquire resources for the self that are
predicated upon personal dharma. These rightful actions, or karmas, over time will continue to clothe the self in
the garments of personal truth, until the purposeful self shines forth for all to see. This is the bhava of self
realization, according to dharma, in the world of material manifestation. The Ancient Vedas say: "Having realized
the Self, the perfected souls, satisfied with their knowledge, passion free, tranquil - those wise beings , having
attained the omnipresent on all sides - enter into the All itself."
In assessing the vocational attributes of the tenth bhava it is essential to look at the planetary ruler of this
powerful house. The nature of the planet ruling the tenth will make itself known by it sign and house position. If
the planet ruling the tenth is in its own sign, a friends sign or exaltation, it will prove to be very powerful. If this
planet is in an inimical sign, or in the sign of its fall, it is weakened. Further, if the planet ruling the tenth is placed
in one of the dharmic, trikonal houses it is very auspicious. The planet ruling the specific house of dharma falling
into one of the trikonal houses of dharma creates a confluence of dharma! If this planet falls into a kendra bhava,
one of the angles, it is capable of manifesting great worldly power, according to the power of the particular
kendra. When the ruler of the tenth falls into one of the dustanna bhavas, or evil houses, houses 6, 8, 12, and to
a lesser degree house 3, it is capable of creating difficulties in the unfolding of vocation, based upon the karmic
considerations of the particular dustanna house. If you have one of these aforesaid dustanna locations

20

associated with the tenth lord, please do not take your life in hopes of reincarnating with the tenth lord in a
kendra, or a trikonal house! These are only general guidelines and there are a myriad of mitigating
circumstances. In addition, benefic planets aspecting the tenth lord, or on either side of the tenth lord are
capable of creating uplifting circumstances for vocation. Conversely, malefic planets aspecting, or on either side
of the tenth lord are capable of creating difficult circumstances for vocation. ( To determine planetary friendship
and benefic planets see my article, The Grahas, in the June 1995 edition of TMA).
The ruler of the tenth house is of paramount importance when assessing vocational dharma. The ruler of karma
bhava is to be considered, even before looking at the planets contained within the tenth house! Think about the
wisdom of the sages. Even if the most honored guests are in the house, to what avail is it for the condition of the
house if the landlord is not in a position of power, or worse in jail! The powerful guests aside, the house will
become dilapidated; a shanty with the passage of time! Planets within the tenth house can only deliver their
strength if the planetary ruler of karma bhava is in a position of strength.
The planets in karma bhava deliver vocational power based upon their inherent natures. Generally speaking, the
Sun indicates executives, government service and organizational and political administrators. The Moon
indicates commerce and occupations connected to water, the nurturing, care giving, and counseling professions,
and professions that deal with the public. Mercury generally indicates, merchants, writers, authors, journalists,
information processing and telecommunications professions, as well as counselors, astrologers and yes, thieves;
that is the proverbial used car salesperson! Venus generally indicates professions involving personal
enhancement, cosmeticians, clothier, jewelry and decorative professions, the hotel and entertainment profession.
Mars, of course represents the military and all courageous professions such as police, fire department, etc. Mars
also indicates mechanical ability represented in the engineering, service and medical professions. Jupiter
generally represents the judicial branch, such as lawyers, judges, as well as teaches, ministers, both politically
and spiritually, bankers and general big picture corporate types. Saturn generally speaking represents scientists,
administrators, engineers, as well as the service industry and all professions associated with the earth, such as
farming and agriculture. The Nodes of the Moon basically have the same consideration as the planets in Vedic
astrology. Rahu, the north node of the Moon, is generally considered to represent researchers, psychotherapists,
criminologists and all professions involved with penetrating insight into both the spiritual and dark side of life.
Lastly, Ketu, the south node of the Moon, gives otherworldly vocational trends, such as spiritual and religious
professions, as well as vocations involving the aerospace-space industry.
These general planetary indicators aside, planets in the tenth become increasingly powerful if they themselves
are rulers of the trikonal and kendra houses. They further gain stature if they are in combination with such
planets that rule the auspicious houses of dharma and power. Of course, planets in their own signs, or sign of
exaltation become increasingly powerful tenants in the house of karma. Are you beginning to assess your
vocational dharma like the ancient Vedic mind yet?
The Karakas of Karma Bhava; The Indicators of Profession

21

As well as planetary rulers, every house in Vedic astrology has planetary indicators, or karakas specifically
associated with it. In the classic Vedic text, Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, the Father of Vedic astrology, sage
Parasara proclaims that the karaka of the tenth bhava is the planet Mercury. Planetary karakas must always be
considered, along with planetary house rulers, to assess the affairs of the particular house in question. The
planet Mercury is the planet of the discriminating intellect in Vedic astrology. Mercury offers a choice based upon
our discrimination. We can choose to embrace our swadharma. We can also choose not to embrace our dharma.
Opposition to dhamra is called adharma. It means to go against divine law. As karaka of the tenth, Mercury gives
us a choice at the cross roads of vocation.
In addition to fixed planetary karakas for each of the houses, in Vedic astrology there is special group of
moveable planetary karakas. These are calculated by how many degrees a planet has traversed in zodiacal
longitude in the sidereal zodiac. The planet that has the highest number of degrees in any sign is considered the
atmakaraka. Atmakaraka means, "indicator of the soul." The late zodiacal degree of the atmakaraka indicates
that the quality represented by this planet is in an advanced state of development within the person. If this planet
is in its own sign, a friends sign, or exaltation then this quality is deeply ingrained in the self. Because the
atmakaraka is indicative of self maturity it must be figured in the assessing of personal dharma.
There is a further refinement of the atmakaraka that is used in assessing vocation. Vedic astrology uses a
number of harmonic charts called vargas, or divisional charts. There are a good sixteen of them in total, but by
far the most important is the ninth harmonic chart, known as the navamsa chart. Any good Vedic astrology
software program will calculate the divisional charts for you. Once you have determined your atmakaraka you will
want to see in what zodiacal sign it falls within the navamsa. The sign that the atmakaraka falls within in the
navamsa is known as the karakamsa. The wisdom of the ancient sages is that these further refinements of the
atmakaraka, the indicator of the soul, reveal more subtle aspects of the self. There are varied schools of thought
and many techniques, but the line of thinking is that the quality of the sign in which the karakamsha is placed is
present in the vocational dharma of self. Again if the atmakaraka is in its own sign, a friends sign, or exaltation
sign it becomes powerfully disposed. With all the attention to detail in this article you will not at all be surprised to
find that my karakamsa fall in the sign of Virgo!
Lastly, there is a specific harmonic, or varga chart that is associated with vocation. It is the tenth harmonic and it
is called the dasamsa chart. Vedic sage Parasara said this chart should be studied only in reference to the natal
chart to reveal elements of the persons vocational life. The technical aspects of the varga charts are beyond the
scope of this article, but please remember that any one of the vargas are only to be studied in reference to the
natal chart. They are limbs of a body, and only have meaning in reference to the whole. These vargas are like the
various Vedanga, additional sacred text, which are considered the limbs of the Vedas. Jyotish, or Vedic astrology
is one such limb. The sages suggest that these limbs should not be studied without reference to the main body;
the Vedas.
Ancient Eastern Society Meets Modern Western Society

22

In ancient Vedic society it was relatively easy for the astrologer to assess profession for it was largely an
inherited position, determined by varna dharma, that is the social dharma or the caste one was born into at birth.
This is still true to some extent in modern India. Although this may seem unfair to the western mind, it is not
necessarily so. Ancient India was a culture founded on the sacred principles expounded in the Vedas. The law of
karma, of cause and effect, determined ones birth in family. This in turn determined ones social dharma, or place
in society. According to human dharma, at the proper time; the grihasta station in life, an individual took up their
profession. This was a rite of passage. In due time, at the next station, the vanaprastha station, the person
gradually removed themselves from public life seeking complete withdrawal, or moksha, in the final sannyasa
station of life. These were also rites of passage. This was a natural order, ordained by the Vedas. In ancient India
there was an inherent simplicity when it came to choosing vocation. But that was millennia ago, and our modern
western cultures are exceedingly more complex in the choosing of vocation. I bring up this point to emphasize
the fact that modern societies social stratification is not founded on the same principles as ancient Vedic society.
The ancient Vedic mind envisioned an inherent ordering of society determined by the four levels of dharma. The
individual turned to social dharma to determine their place in the world. In this sense, ancient Vedic society was
a benevolent society that facilitated personal dharma according to the divine plan, as expressed by the four
levels of dharma. Further, scripture suggested that personal dharma could be revealed with the help of a
competent astrologer. What of our modern society? Do you envision the modern, industrialized society, as a
benevolent society founded to help fulfill personal dharma? On the contrary, the modern industrialized society is
frankly not concerned with the evolutionary progress of the individual and the worldly vocation that would most
facilitate it. The goal of the modern industrialized society is profit. The modern economic sages, and their secular
scriptures would suggest you read, Business Week, Fortune Magazine, or even peruse The Dow Jones
Industrials to find your viable vocational place in society. The economic scriptures would never suggest to consult
an astrologer!
The Wages of Dharma and The Wages of Profit
It is clear that the goals of the ancient Vedic sages, who cognized the Vedas and Jyotish, are distinctly different
from the goals of our modern industrialized times. The modern industrial society is interested in profit, not the
purposeful fulfillment of an individuals swadharma! Profit has replaced personal dharma! Yes, our modern
culture is laden with resources; the accumulation of artha, but are these resources based on personal dharma? I
often feel the goal of the modern western profit culture is best summarized in a contemporary bumper sticker,
usually found on the back of upscale luxury cars. It reads: "Those with the most toys win when they die." This
statement stands in sharp contrast to the final goal of moksha, or liberation, embraced by Vedic society. When
artha leads dharma, the self threatens to be covered over by purposeless, material possessions. Perhaps this
modern emphasis on artha, the accumulation of resources, even at the expense of personal dharma has left
many confused as to the purpose of their life beyond the acquisition of wealth.
Unfortunately, in our times labor largely follows profit, not dharma. The ancient Vedic mind realized that profit, or
artha must follow dharma. This is expressed in natural ordering of the artha houses, following the dharma
houses of the Vedic chart! Labor without dharma, is ignorance. It has nothing to do with right vocation; it is

23

merely work, and work is not right vocation. That is why the ancient astrologers gave the domain of work and
service to the dustanna sixth house, and right vocation to the powerful tenth kendra. (See Astrology and Right
Vocation in the Nineties: TMA, November 1993 issue).
Profit must follow personal purpose, how can it be otherwise? If not, the end will always justify the means. This is
adharma. This is to go against divine order. Because labor largely follows profit in our times, Vedic astrology
particularly offers profound insights into right vocation in our times, for as you have been reading, profit has
nothing to do with vocational dharma! Vedic astrology brings with it a certain vantage point of the ancient mind
that assesses our worldly vocation from a more otherworldly headset. Perhaps one of the greatest Greek sages,
Plato, speaks to us today regarding the vocational dilemma of our times. In Book Six of the Republic Plato says:
"and what if a man is forgetful and retains nothing of what he learns, will he not be an empty vessel? That is
certain. Laboring in vain, he must end in hating himself and his fruitless occupation."
Labor can only follow dharma, as surely as the earth can only circumnavigate the Sun. The wages of right
vocation go well beyond the money and wealth acquired. They are purposeless without the light of swadharma.
No one can say that material wealth makes one shine forth the light of personal dharma. Wrongful accumulation
of wealth may indeed cover up the light of true personal dharma. The most powerful wage of right vocation
according to the ancient Vedic mind is the realization of ones personal dharma; the realization of self. This
indeed can make one splendiferous, even without a penny to ones name! All that glitters is not gold. Verily, the
ancient Vedic mind would agree that this is the path to shine forth the splendiferous, purposeful self. The ancient
Vedas say; "That splendor that resides in an elephant, in a king, among men, or within the water, with which the
Gods in the beginning came to Godhood, with that same splendor make me splendid, O Lord."

PROFESSION and 10th HOUSE

I shall show in this chapter how astrology can help people in finding out which profession would suit them best.
Likewise we can read from a person's horoscope what profession his would be father-in-law is following. As you
are aware the 10th house is called the house of profession or Karma, which forms the very foundation, as it
were, of the edifice of human life. It should be borne in mind that man is nothing without action. Action is the beall and. end-all of human existence. Man takes birth only to work out his past Karma and to do better Karma in
this life in preparation for a better life hereafter. Accordingly, the Isavasyopanisad declares, "One should wish
to live for a hundred years here only performing actions." It is through action, therefore, that we judge a man.
Hence, Karma, action or profession, forms one of the most fundamental factors of man's mundane life.
Accordingly the 10th house is called the Meridian, highest point. It is also designated as Mana, self-respect,
honour or pride. Among the Kendras too the 10th house is important from another point : The Lagna-Kendra is
known as Brahma-Kendra, place of creation; it is the East; it is the Head of Kalapurusa. Now the 10th signifies
Paurusa or manliness or martial power. It is, therefore, Ksatriya-Kendra. It is based on Rajoguna which goads
man into action. When man renounces all activities, he attains purity of Satva which makes him eligible for
entering the portals of self-realization or the Summum Bonum of existence.

24

Students of astrology are aware that the general method of reading a person's profession is through the lord of
the Navamsa occupied by the lord of the 10th house. But this is not a sure and infallible method. There are many
other factors which go into the making of profession. Man follows some avocation because he likes it and
through that he wishes to earn his livelihood. If one gets a good deal of honour and wealth from his profession,
he is said to have a good and comfortable profession.
So generally professional success is measured in terms of lucre. In other words, it revolves round Artha and
Kama, wealth and enjoyment of pleasures. There are also several grades of professional status. One may be a
menial, another a clerk, yet another a minister, and so on. How are we to judge whether a person's profession is
high, moderate or low ? First of all we have to consider the Ascendant, its lord, aspects and planets posited in it.
For, the first Bhava represents the Body with which we have to perform all our actions. Accordingly says
Kalidasa, "Sariramadyam khalu dharmasadhanam" The body is the first and foremost means of achieving
Dharma. Then the position and strength of the Moon also have to be taken into consideration, as the Moon
represents the Cosmic Mind Can-drama manaso jatah the Moon was born of the Mind of the Creator, and
consequently is the significator for the human mind. Then we have to note the strength and position of the Sun
who is the Soul of the universe 'Surya atma jagatas tasthusasca.' The strength and good positions of the
benefics also are essential for ensuring a good and happy life. Benefics should generally occupy in strength
Kendras and malefics the 3rd, 6th and llth receiving benefic aspects. It is also important that benefics should
generally be more powerful than malefics. But the lord of Bhagya fortune whoever he might be, must be
strong, well-aspected and well-situated. The lord of Karma too must be similarly placed in a Kona, which is at
least a friendly house. It is better if there is connection betwe.en the lords of the Lagna, Bhagya and Karma.
Similarly the lords of wealth and gain (2nd and llth) among others must be strong and well placed. The same
remark applies to the lords of happiness and intelligence (4th and 5th). If all these conditions are satisfied, the
subject is sure to occupy a high position of honour, getting plenty of money and homage. He will also discharge
his duties efficiently and honourably.
In fact, when you consider a particular Bhava, all the other Bhavas also come into the picture in some
relationship or other, as they are all intrinsically connected with it. For example, the 6th house becomes the 10th
from the house of Fortune. Hence no Bhava examined in isolation could give an accurate account of itself. It is
not these Bhavas and their lords alone that give us a clue to a man's position, mode of life and activities.'
There are certain positions of planets in the Signs of the zodiac and Yogas which at once tell you whether the
subject is a prince or peasant, wealthy or bankrupt, physician or patient, and so on. For example, it is said that
one would be seated on a throne, if it be the 6th of the Candra-Kriyas. Similarly, when the full Moon occupying
Pisces is aspected by a friendly planet, a preeminent monarch delighting the world is born. When all the planets
occupying the Navamsa of Jupiter are situated in Kendras 9th or 2nd house, the subject becomes an ascetic
from his boyhood. If Jupiter be posited in the 8th house, the native would be poor and earn his living as a menial.
On the other hand, should he be in the 9th, he could aspire to become a minister. So too Venus occupying the
2nd house makes one a poet and wealthy. The same planet in the 10th enables one to have a comfortable .
Saturn in the Lagna identical with his own or exaltation house produces one equal to a king, or a mayor. Birth in

25

the several Lagnas indicates some sort of al leanings. For example, one born in the Vrsabha Lagna would be
engaged in agriculture. One born in Mithuna could read other's thoughts or become a psychologist, and take
interest in dancing and music. Birth in Virgo gives the power of interpreting Sastras or scriptures. Libra makes
one clever in trade; Scorpio a government servant or an employee in a palace; Capricorn a religious hypocrite.
Similarly different constellations produce different leanings.
The existence of excellent Yogas like Mahayogas, Rajayogas, Mahapurusa Yogas, Mahabhagya, Kesari,
Adhiyoga, Vasumat, Puskala, Laksmi, SarasvatI etc. contributes to great fortune, eminence and certain al bias.
All these things drive us to the conclusion that the whole horoscope should be judged as a single unit and its
status ascertained before venturing on a prediction. Even in the horoscope of a beggar there might be some kind
of Rajayoga. In that case how could he be in that position ? The idea is that he may become the leader of
beggars.
I am giving hereunder some Yogas which indicate al aptitudes :
When all the planets occupy Kendras and Panapharas only, the person will become a king or landlord. It is to be
noted here that the benefics and the Moon should be strong and free from the aspect of or conjunction with
malefics.
(a) If the full and strong Moon is situated in her exaltation, own house or friend's house identical with the 9th,
4th, 7th or 10th and is aspected by or conjoined with Jupiter or Venus;
(b) if Mars and Saturn are similarly endowed with strength and benefic aspect etc., and occupy the 2nd and 10th
houses, the person will become illustrious, almost omniscient, a paragon of virtues, munificent and beloved of
the people.
If the lord of the Ascendant should occupy the 1st, 2nd or 3rd decanate of the Lagna, the native would be a
judge, governor or village-headman, as the case may be. If on the other hand, the planet concerned should be
aspected by or conjoined with Venus, Jupiter or Mercury, and be situated in a benefic Varga or in his exaltation,
he would become an emperor.
The Moon occupying different signs and aspected by the several planets also shows some kind of al inclination :
(i) In Gemini she being aspected by Mars and Saturn makes one a blacksmith and a weaver respectively. In
modern world the appellation blacksmith would include mechanical engineer, worker in a type foundry, iron works
etc.
(ii) In Leo she being aspected by Mercury makes one an astrologer, and by Saturn a barber.
(iii) In Scorpio aspected by Venus, she makes one a soldier. The Navamsa occupied by the Moon gives some
guidance in this direction :
(i) The Moon in a Navamsa of Mars being aspected by the Sun produces a policeman.
(ii) In the Amsa of Venus the Moon being aspected by Mercury makes one a good poet; by Jupiter, an author of
excellent literary works.
Conjunctions of planets also give some clues to al tendencies :
(i) The Sun & Moon in conjunction make one skilled in machinery and stone-work.

26

(ii) Venus and the Moon conjoined produce an adept in weaving, tailoring or dyeing of clothes.
(iii) Mars & Mercury conjoined make one a druggist or physician.
(iv) Mars & Venus joined together make one a wrestler or gambler.
(v) Gulika posited singly or in conjunction with others in different Bhavas also indicates some avocations.
Many a time the planets occupying or aspecting the Ascendant contribute their qualities for the formation of
avocation. Still the most common and popular method is to read the from the lord of the Navamsa occupied by
the lord of the 10th house counted from the strongest of the three viz. Ascendant, Moon, and Sun. The s and
evocations belonging to the several planets have been already enumerated in Chapter II.
Regarding the 10th house too there are several factors to be taken into consideration :
(i)

_1 lord of that Bhava

(ii)

_2

lord of the Sign occupied by the lord of the 10th,

(iii)

_3

planets in the I0th house,

(iv)

_4

planets aspecting the 10th,

(v)

_5

lord of the Navamsa forming the cusp of the 10th, and

(vi)

_6

lord of the Navamsa occupied by the lord of the 10th.

All these planets or the strongest of them will contribute his share to formulate the native's . According to some
authorities, if the 10th house is not tenanted by any planet, then the owner of that house should determine the .
In all cases, if the planet concerned be very strong, the subject would be able to earn wealth without much effort
and be quite happy. Otherwise the result will vary according to the planet's strength. If the sign mentioned above
is occupied or aspected by its own lord, the person will earn his living in his own country. On the other hand, if
the planet owning the Rasi or Amsa is in a movable sign, he will earn money in a foreign country. If the said lord
is retrograde, he will earn money from various sources. But one's measure of wealth entirely depends on one's
fortune9th house, its lord etc. A single benefic in the 10th from the Moon or Lagna without contact with or
aspect of inimical planets will usher into the world a person enjoying the company of a large family and everlasting fame.

Engineer :If a benefic is in the sign and decanate belonging to Mercury and if the lord of the 10th is aspected
by Saturn (or if Mercury is in the 2nd and in his own decanate), the subject will be an engineer.
Landlordship :
(i)

_One will own plenty of lands if the lords of the 4th and 10th houses are in mutual reception, and if Mars
is possessed of strength;

(ii)

_ if the owner of the sign occupied by Mars be conjoined with the lord of the 4th or is in the 4 th house;

(iii)

_if Mars is aspected by the lord of the 4th; or by those of the 9th and 10th houses;

(iv)

_if the lord of the 4th house occupies in strength the 10th house which is a friendly sign;

(v)

_if the lord of the 10th house is aspected by or conjoined with the Moon and Venus.

27

Earning by Self-Effort :The following planetary combinations lead to this effect :

(i)

_When the Lagna lord is in the llth aspected by benefics and the lords of the 2nd and llth houses;

(ii)

_when the lord of the ascendant is in the 2nd, 9th or 10th identical with his exaltation or friendly house,
aspected by the lord of the llth;

(iii)

_when the lagna-lord is in the 10th, or in a Kendra from the lord of the 9th or 10th, or in his exaltation,
and conjoined with the lord of the llth house.

Cruel Command : One gives cruel orders

(i)

_if the Sun or Mars be in the 10th and its lord in a Kendra;

(ii)

_if the 10th house is occupied by Rahu and Saturn;

(iii)

_if Rahu or Ketu be in the 8th and the lOth-lord in debilitation;

(iv)

_if the lord of the 10th be conjoined with Saturn and aspected by the lord of the 8th and be posited in a
malefic Navamsa.
One performs meritorious deeds if benefics occupy the 10th house counted from the Lagna or the Moon, or its
Navamsa. Malefics in the above positions make one commit evil deeds. So does one, if the lord of the sign
occupied by owner of the 10th house or its Amsa be malefic and conjoined with an Upagraha like Dhuma.

I am giving below the effects of the presence of the several planets in the 10th house counted from the Moon :
(i)

_If it be the Sun, the subject becomes a great administrator who succeeds in all his big undertakings;

(ii)

_if it be Mars, he will be adventurous and of a sinful disposition;

(iii)

_if it be Mercury, learned;

(iv)

_if Jupiter, equal to a king;

(v)

_if Venus, enjoy comforts; and

(vi)

_if Saturn, sorrow-stricken.

If in the above house the Sun be conjoined with

(i)

_Mars, the person will be addicted to wine and other women;

(ii)

_with Mercury, he will be well-versed in astrology and be fond of his wife, wealth, ornaments and trading
with foreign countries;

(iii)

_with Jupiter, he will be blessed and honoured by Kings;

(iv)

_with Venus, possessed of royal favour, women and wealth; and

(v)

_with Saturn, wretched and indigent.

If in the above house Mars be conjoined with

(i)

_Mercury, the subject will live by means of his knowledge of Sastras i.e. be will be a teacher;

28

(ii)

_with Jupiter, he will be the leader of low-class people;

(iii)

_with Venus, he will be doing business in foreign countries; and

(iv)

_with Saturn, he will do daring deeds and be childless.

If in the above house Mercury be conjoined with

(i)

_Jupiter, he will be impotent, of servile speech, famous and in royal favour;

(ii)

_with Venus, he will be blessed with learning, wealth and wife; and

(iii)

_with Saturn, he will be a writer (copyist or clerk) of books, and be engaged in perverse activities.
If in the above position Jupiter be conjoined

(i)

_with Venus, he will be the protector of Brahmins, favourite of kings and very learned; and

(ii)

_with Saturn, he will succeed in giving trouble to one and all, and tenaciously cling to his undertakings.
If Venus and Saturn are together in that house, he will become a pharmacist manufacturing scents etc., and be a
physician and merchant.

Let me give below some charts by way of illustration :

I. A Very Successful Doctor : (The figures represent Navamsa. Rasis) Ascendant Cancer 5 with Mars
8; Venus 5 Leo; Sun 10 and Mercury 6 Virgo; Rahu 8 Libra; R. Sat. 9 Sagittarius; R. Jup. 2 Capricorn; Moon 8
Pisces. The lord of Lagna is in Bhagya whose lord is in the 7th (Kona-lord in Kendra) and being retrograde
becomes strong. Lord of the 8th is in the 6th in strength and Vargottamamsa thereby producing Viparita
JRajayoga. The Sun with Mercury (lord of the sign tenanted by him) is in the house of power and influence which
is aspected in its turn by Fortune-lord, who aspects the Lagna, and lord of Karma as well as the house of
acquisition. Mars, Yogakaraka, with his own Amsa, though debilitated has attained Nicabhanga Rajayoga. Note
also that he as the lord of 10th is in the Ascendant, which is very significant from the point of . The Lagna-lord is
full in the 9th. Even the cusp of the 10th house is the 1st Navamsa of Aries. Mars, you know, has the portfolio of
a surgeon. Note also that both the 10th house and its lord are in movable houses. Hence the subject is living in a
foreign country. Note also the lords of 9th and 10th are in watery signs.
II. An Officer of Air Force : Lagna Taurus 1 with Jup. 1; Moon 11 Ketu 9 Gemini; R. Saturn 10 Cancer;
Mars 10 Virgo, Sun 5, R. Mercury 8, Sagit.; Venus 5 Capricorn. Benefic lord of gain is in the Lagna; Yogakaraka
Saturn is in the 3rd, a watery sign, (in own Amsa) whose lord is full. Lord of Lagna is in Fortune with the Amsa of
Happiness. The Yogakaraka and Lagna-lord are in mutual Kendra and aspect. No doubt this chart is not free
from blemishes i.e. weaknesses. The of this chart should be one relating to Saturn and Mars, the former
presiding over wind and the latter" over weapons and machines.
III. A Major in the Army : Lagna Cancer 11; Sun 8 Leo; R. Venus 11, Rahu 2, Mere. 4 Virgo; Mars 4
Scorpio; R. Saturn 1 Capri.; R. Jup. 2 Aquarius; Moon 11 Taurus. Look at the fine dispositions of planets in this
chart. The Lagna-lord is exalted in the llth. There is Kesari Yoga. Mars, Mercury and Saturn are in their own
houses. The Moon is at the apex of an equilateral triangle. There are many kinds of Rajayoga and two
Mahapurusa Yogas, Rucaka and Sasa. The 10th-lord is Mars and he is the lord of the Navamsa occupied by the

29

lOth-lord from the Moon. The Bhagya-lord, though posited in the 8th, aspects the lord of wealth. The lords of 10,
2, 9 and 1 are in mutual Kendras.
IV. An Astrologer of Note : Lagna Gemini 10 with Saturn 2; Rahu 1 Leo; Jupiter 9 Libra; Mercury 9
Pisces; Sun 4, Mars 4 Aries; Moon 11, Venus 2 Taurus. Mercury has Nica-bhanga. Lord of 10th aspects llth with
two planets, one of whom is exalted and the other though in his own house is corn-bust, Lagna and Bhagya.
Venus in Vargottamamsa in own house is conjoined with the exalted Moon, lord of wealth, though in 12th. The
Ascendant and the lord thereof in Pisces indicate this . So too does Jupiter, lord of the Navamsa occupied by
him. For both Mercury and Jupiter have the portfolio of Astrology.
V. Metallurgist:Aries 7 Lagna; Mars 11 Taurus; Rahu 10 Gemini; Moon 9 Cancer; Saturn 8 Scorpio;
Jup. 11, Mere. 11, Sun 7, Venus 1 Aquarius. Mars comes to Lagna Bhava. Lords of Lagna and 10th aspect each
other. The latter has Vargottamamsa. Lords of 2, 3 and 9 are in Labha and those of 1, 2, 9 & 10 are in mutual
Kendras. Mars presides over metallurgy, of course.
VI. Scholar Administrator : Cancer 6 Ascendant with Ketu 10; R. Jup. 4 Leo; Saturn 6 Scorpio; Mercury
6 Capri.; Sun 1 Moon 1 Aquar.; Venus 2 Aries; Mars 6 Taurus. Mars and Venus are in mutual reception. The
presence of Ketu in Lagna tends to give the gentleman a philosophica! outlook on life. Venus in his own Amsa in
the 10th conduces to an aesthetic disposition. Lord of Bhagya in the 2nd aspects the lords of both Lagna and
2nd house. lOth-lord is in the llth. There is Kesari Yoga. Jupiter, Mars, Sun and Moon and Saturn are in mutual
Kendras. Presence of Venus in the 10th suggests authorship of works of cultural interest. The house of speech is
well entrenched by the presence of the strong Jupiter. Hence his reasoned and seasoned speeches. Though
lords of 1st and 2nd are in the 8th, yet they receive the aspect of Jupiter, lord of 9th. The luminaries are in the
house of gain from the house of Command. The complete surrender of the Moon to the Sun suggests the
sublimation and subjugation of the mind by the Atman. It also shows that he is a true servant of the State. As
Mars is in the 11th, we can say that his gain is through a position of command. Both Lagna-lord and 2nd-lord are
in the Amsa of Mars. The lord of 10th, Mars, aspects the house of wealth. Mercury, lord of the concerned
Navamsa, is not generally associated with administrative powers. Still in the Uttara-kalamrta the word
Mahatantra occurs in the list of Mercury's portfolios. That word means among other things "great administrative
status".
VII. A Great Sage :- Libra 9 Lagna; Mars 5 Scorpio Moon 2 Capri.; Sun 3 Mere. 11, Rahu 2 Aquar.;
Venus4 Pisces;
Jup. 7 Aries; Saturn 3 Gemini. Look at this marvellous horoscope of a Great Seer. Jupiter is in 7th Kendra
aspect! ng its lord Mars. The Yogakaraka is in Bhagya; lord of the Lagna is exalted; there is exchange'of
positions between the lords of 5th and 9th; Mars is in his own house. The great spiritual planet has considerable
influence on this chart. The Moon has exaltation Amsa. Saturn, the planet of renunciation is in the house of
Purvapunya. That shows that he was born for Sannyasa and spiritual ministration of the people. In Bhava Saturn
comes to the 10th. There are many good Yogas such as Kesari. Out of 7 planets 5 are in Kendras and Konas.
Lord of Bhagya, Mercury, has Vargottamamsa. The Moon is in the house of Saturn, which is significant. The
house of intellect is occupied by Aditya, the ideal of Brahmacarins and Brahma-vadins, along with Mercury, the

30

scholar. The lord of Penance is in the house of Happiness, thereby indicating that he took to penance as duck to
water. Saturn's aspect over Labha shows the maxim, "Adanam hi visargaya" Acquisition is only for bounteous
gifts.

TIBETAN ASTROLOGY;sun & birth signs; past & future lifes

There is much speculation about how you can find information about past lives in a chart. However, there is a
method for looking at this that has been used for many thousands of years in Tibet.
I believe this method has a solid foundation. It is based upon the Buddhist wheel of life. The Buddhist wheel of
life gives pictures of the illusions of life on earth. It gives insight in how to overcome these illusions so that
moksha becomes possible.
The Buddhist wheel of life is portrayed on tapestries which can be found in many Tibetan Buddhist monasteries.
The most while known tapestry is a tapestry found in a monastery in Sikkim.

In this article you will see the connection between the Buddhist Wheel of Life and the astrological chart. An
astrological analysis makes it possible to find out which spiritual path is the most suitable for a person, so that
imbalances can disappear.
It also becomes clear what the direction is in which a soul can develop itself.
Tibetan astrology can be divided into 2 parts. One part is based upon Chinese astrology. However, the other part
has its roots in Vedic astrology, the astrology of India. Buddha himself came from India. Therefore it is logical that
spiritual Tibetan astrology has its roots in Vedic astrology.
SIDEREAL ASTROLOGY
Tibetan astrology is a form of sidereal astrology. Therefore we should use the Vedic chart and not the Western
chart. There is a difference of about 22 to 24 degrees between the position of the planets in the Western and in
the Vedic chart.
Also we will make use of the so called bhava chakra. This is a Vedic chart, not based upon equal houses, but
based upon the house system of Sripati (this has much similarity to the house system that is known in the West
as Porphyry, however in Sripati the housecusps are the middle of a house, not the beginning).
NIDANA (THE SOUL)
In Vedic astrology the Sun is the planet that gives information about the soul.
The sidereal sign in which the Sun is located gives information about the reason why a certain soul has
incarnated. The Tibetans call this the nidana. The word nidana can be translated into the incarnation impulse. In
many cases this has to do with certain imbalances that should be corrected in this life.
The sidereal sign of the Sun is the major nidana.
There is also a minor nidana which is indicated by the ascendant.

31

Suppose someone has the Sun in Scorpio, but the ascendant in Gemini. As we shall see in the scheme below
the reincarnation impulse will be to learn how to deal with addictions to pleasure (Scorpio), of a changeable
nature (Gemini).
The learning process consists of reaching fulfilment by becoming one with the True Self (solution for Scorpio).
This should be done in a calm way that implies setting ones mind at rest (solution for Gemini). In the overview
given below the solution for a certain nidana is found at the end of the description of a certain nidana.
There is a relationship between the nature of a nidana and the corresponding astrological sign.
Each nidana has a symbol that expresses a certain state which needs to be overcome by spiritual development.
Below you see brief descriptions of the nidanas. The symbols which you see are details out of the Buddhist
Wheel of Life.
The Buddhist Wheel of Life is held by the Lord of Death (Yama). He is the frightening figure that holds the Wheel.
The Wheel of Life is about the imbalances that are the cause of incarnation. Therefore all the nidanas are
inauspicious. Only by attaining a balanced, spiritual, attitude is it possible to reach spiritual liberation. By
meditating upon the Wheel of Life it is possible to reach such an attitude.
Liberation is possible by breaking away from the central processes of the major and minor nidana. In many
cases this has to do with the release of material desires and concentrating on spiritual values.
Aries: symbol a blind man. Avijja, Not Knowing. This nadina has to do with the unconscious will that goes its
own way and on a new start. The blind man is ignorant. The central state is ignorance. Aries is characterised by
quick actions that have consequences that are not always overseen. That is why he stumbles. Only
enlightenment can give insight in the true state of the Cosmos.
Taurus: symbol: a potter. Sankara, Strength of Mind. When we come into existence the mind develops. The
person engages himself with materials and with developing strength of mind. How the pot will look depends upon
the potter. At the start of the cycle we are formed by the consequences of old karma. Starting from that point we
will shape our future by our deeds. Every thought, every action causes karma and therefore is of consequence to
our future.
The central state has to do with creation, creating our future. The spiritual person knows how he is shaping his
own karma and is doing things with awareness.
Gemini: symbol: a restless monkey. Vinnanna, consciousness. This nadina has to do with the conscious will,
communication, change and restless activity. The monkey engages himself with picking fruit. However, soon
another piece of fruit will pull his attention.
The central state is restlessness. Gemini is characterised by going from one project to another without finishing
something.
Spiritual growth will give this sign the rest that he needs.
Cancer: symbol, a ship with two persons and a third who paddles and decides where the voyage is going to.
Nama-Rupa, Body-mind. The two small persons in the boat symbolise consciousness (Vinnana) and the body.
The mind has found a means of transport (the boat, which symbolises the body). The destination is being

32

decided by the True Self who is symbolised by the large person. Water is a symbol of emotions. Cancer is an
emotional sign.
The central state is resistance and surrender. By surrender to the True Self the journey will be easier.
Leo: symbol: a house with windows. Salyanta, six senses. A (not visible) person is in a house that has five
floors, windows and a door. These symbolise the six senses (eyes, nose, ears, tongues, body and mind). It is
through these that we see the world. However, observation through the senses is unreliable. What we observe is
decided by the limitations of the senses.
The central state is use of the senses which can lead to incorrect observation. Only meditation will lead us to the
true reality.
Virgo: symbol: two figures who are making love. Phassa, contact. The result of the meeting between the six
senses (Salyanta) and an object is contact. The lovers embrace eachother in a sensual hug. The try to make one
body out of two.
The central state is sensuality. Trying to make one body out of two will never be totally successful. Only
spirituality will lead to true oneness.
Libra: symbol: a figure with an arrow in his eye. Vedana, feeling. A man screams in an agonised way because
he has an arrow in his eye. The arrow symbolises the large amount of data that are received by the senses
because of contacts (Phassa).
The central state is over stimulation of the senses because of outside contacts. This causes feelings and
emotions. Only by going inside is it possible to experience rest.
Scorpio: symbol: a woman gives beverage to a man. Tanha, desires. The giving of beverage symbolises the
giving of pleasure. The fact that beverage is given symbolises the addictive nature of pleasure. Desires will arise
because of the feelings (Vedana) that are caused by contact (Phassa).
The central state is addiction to pleasure. Only by becoming one with the True Self can one reach real fulfilment.
Sagittarius: symbol: a woman that collects fruit in a basket. Upadana, greed. The fruit is the symbol for earthly
objects of which we think they will give us satisfaction.
The central state is trying to reach external goals of which we think they will satisfy us. However, true satisfaction
is only reached by going inside.
Capricorn: symbol: two people making love in a cabin. Bhava, becoming. Two people are making love which
results in a pregnancy. This makes a new start possible.
The central state is the modelling of a new start. This best way to make this new start is to concentrate on
spirituality. For most people desire and greet (Tanha and Upadana) will lead to new physical births and
continuation of the Wheel of Life. However, it is also possible to make a new start influenced by spirituality which
can result in freedom from the Wheel of Life.
Aquarius: symbol: a birth. Jati, birth. After pregnancy (Bhava) birth takes place. However, the new life that
comes into existence will be confronted with the limitations of life on earth. A spiritual rebirth will not have to deal
with those limitations. Aquarius is an innovative sign. It is best if these innovations are of a spiritual nature.

33

Pisces: symbol a dead body which is carried away to the grave. Jara-marana, suffering. This nadina has to do
with loss and the release of everything material. Everything on earth will eventually come to an end. Every birth
(jati) will lead to suffering and dying. Dying will lead to a new birth and a new start of the cycle (Avija).
Freeing oneself from materiality and desires will lead to a spiritual rebirth and liberation out of the Wheel of Life.

LOKA: WHERE THE SOUL IS COMING FROM

In the Buddhist Wheel of Life we see six realms. These are divided into three realms of the upper world and
three realms of the under world. The former represent illusions of happiness and the latter illusions of misery.
However, all these realms symbolise illusions. Illusions keep us tied up in the Wheel of Life. Therefore all these
spheres are inauspicious. Even the more happy realms like the realm of Jupiter are inauspicious. A golden cage
is also a cage. Only the ending of illusions and reaching spiritual liberation (moksha) is seen as auspicious.
The highest realm is that of Jupiter. People that come from this realm have in most cases experienced happy
past lives. The lives were satisfying and could be regarded as godly. Therefore this is the realm of the gods.
Some of these people are here to help others. However, they should watch out for arrogance. It is good to be
aware that the realm of Jupiter is still part of the Wheel and therefore a realm of illusions.
At some point the souls that have come out of this sphere will have to go to another realm. This could be for
example the realm of Saturn. Unless of course they manage to free themselves from the wheel.
After that one reaches the realms of the Sun and Mars. This is the realm of heroes and competition. People that
come out of this sphere like to prove themselves. They have to take care not to end up in power struggles.
Coming out of a feeling of lack of self worth they have a tendency to take way possessions and accomplishments
of others. It is important for these people to be satisfied with what they are and show respect for their own
accomplishments.
Next we reach the realm of Mercury. This is the realm of people. Persons that come out of this realm have many
choices, which gives freedom. However, they can be overwhelmed by these choices. Therefore it is important
that they focus their attention to something. Human existence offers a balance between pleasure and problems.
Now we reach the lower realms. The best of the lower realms is the realm of Venus. This is the realm of animals
and instincts. Pursuing pleasure is the central motivation in this realm. In many cases these people have rather
conventional lives. The attitude is one of being mediocre.
However, pursuing pleasure can never give true fulfilment. At the end only spirituality can give what these people
seek.
Next we come to the realm of the Moon. This is the realm of ghosts and illusions. The creatures you see in the
pictures have thin bodies and thirst and hunger that never ends. These people have a tendency not to have
enough of anything. They tend to react from a feeling of lacking something. This attitude can be neutralised by
contentment.
The realm of hell falls under Saturn. These people have had the most difficult lessons of all. The emotion which
keep people caught in the realm of Saturn is hate. Hate can develop as a consequence of deeds about one has

34

the illusion that they have been caused by others (while in fact we create everything that happens in our lives
ourselves). This attitude can be neutralised by compassion.
If we wish to know the lokaplanet, that gives information about with which realm the soul is the most familiar we
have to make the following analysis:

The two lights in the chart are the Sun and Moon. We can find out which of these two lights is the
strongest in the chart. We can do this by simply looking at the placement in sign, house and the aspects. We
can also make use of Shadbala, which is a system that measures the strength of a planet. Most Vedic
astrological software programs can calculate Shadbala within a few seconds.

Next we have to find out in which decanate the Sun and the Moon is found. The easiest method to do
this is to look at the drekkana chart, which is one of the harmonic charts used in Vedic astrology. We look at the
signs of the Sun and the Moon in the drekkana. Next we look at the ruler of the signs in which the Sun and
the Moon in the drekkana are placed. Finally we look at how strong these rulers are placed in the bhava
chart. The stronger of these rulers will be the lokaplanet. Let me give an example: suppose in a certain chart
the Sun is in Scorpio and the Moon is in Libra. The rulers of these signs are Mars and Venus. Next we look how
strong Mars and Venus are in the bhava chart. If Mars is stronger than Venus, then in that case Mars will be the
lokaplanet and the person comes out of the realm of heroes.

After that we analyse how the lokaplanet is placed in the chart. The general quality of the past lives of
the person will be decided by how the lokaplanet is placed. If the lokaplanet is afflicted or weak then the past
lives will have been difficult. For example it is possible that a life under the rule of a strong Venus has been
more pleasurable than a godly life under the realm of Jupiter, that has ended in being nailed on the cross.
This system simply shows with which realm the soul is the most familiar. It does not give information
about the state of development of the soul. Indeed seen from outside the Wheel all realms are equal and they
are all inauspicious. The lokaplanet gives information about the attitude which we bring into this life. It
does not give information on how far advanced we are in a spiritual sense.

LOKA WHERE THE PERSON IS GOING TO

Of course it is interesting to know what your future loka will be. However, keep in mind that there will only be
future lokas if you do not manage to free yourself from the Wheel of Life. Therefore what you analyse here is not
bound to happen.
To gain information about the future loka we follow the next method:

We take the ascendant (for example 5 degrees Taurus).

Next we look at which decanate falls at exactly 150 degrees from the ascendant. We determine the ruler
of that decanate. In this example 150 degrees from 5 degrees Taurus is 5 degrees Libra. The ruler of the first
decanate (the first ten degrees) of Libra is Venus (the ruler of the second decanate Saturn, the planet that belong
to the airsign Aquarius, and the ruler of the third decanate is Mercury, the planet that belongs to the airsign

35

Gemini). In the course Applied Vedic Astrology the concept of decanates and how to work with it is fully
explained.

Next we determine which decanate is found at exactly 210 degrees from the ascendant. We will
determine the ruler of that decanate. In this example if we add 210 degrees to 5 degrees Taurus we arrive at 5
degrees Sagittarius. The ruler of the first decanate of Sagittarius is Jupiter.

In this example the future loka will be the loka of Jupiter or Venus. We will look at which of these two
planets is the stronger in the chart. If this is Jupiter than the person will have more godly experiences in future
lives. The quality of these experienced will be influenced by the state of Jupiter in the chart.
Of course it is possible that someone will move to a difficult realm like the realm of Saturn. If you have analysed
your chart and has found out that this could happen, maybe this will give you an extra motivation for freeing
yourself from the Wheel of Life.
Also apart from freeing yourself from the Wheel of Life it is also possible that by doing good deeds the situation
will change. The astrological chart gives the result of our past karmas. What has happened in the past is certain,
there is not much we can do to change that. However, we can change our future karma by doing the right thing.
Indeed, the Buddhist Wheel of Life shows us what this right thing is.
An astrological analysis using the techniques explained here gives information about what the best attitude is
for us given our astrological chart. Therefore astrology helps you to personalise the general information which
can be found in the Buddhist Wheel of Life

Going House to House

Just as the 12 houses rule different parts of life, for example, the 2nd house is wealth, the 3rd house is younger brothers
and sisters, the 4th house is mother and real estate and so on, similarly, these same houses from each house, rule these
same things for the house in question.
For example, the 4th house is real estate and, therefore, the 4th house from any house is the real estate of that house. The
9th house is religion and also the spiritual master or priest or guru, therefore, the 12th house which is 4th from the 9th, rules
the real estate of the spiritual master or guru.
Let's use a couple tables to make this point. Here's a single word or concept for each of the 12 houses in a chart. These are
not the only or even the best or main descriptions of the houses, but let's work with these in our example:

1-Overall life 2-Money 3-Younger siblings 4-Vehicles 5-Intelligence 6-Debts 7-Spouse 8-Worries 9-Religion 10Career 11-Friends

12-Donations
Now, taking these concepts given above, let's apply them to the houses COUNTED FROM the 4th house, and see how we
can read much about "mother" from our own chart:
4- Mother's Overall life 5- Mother's Money 6- Mother's Younger siblings 7- Mother's Vehicles 8- Mother's Intelligence

9- Mother's Debts 10- Mother's Spouse 11- Mother's Worries 12- Mother's Religion 1- Mother's Career 2- Mother's

36

Friends 3- Mother's Donations

Simple and clear right? And you can and should do this from each and every house. These are the "compound" or
"secondary" things that houses stand for. If you know how to read a chart in this way, you can comment on almost anything
a person asks about. You can usually describe their immediate family members quite accurately. I have had experiences in
talking to people about their charts, using this system, where I was able to accurately guess the nature of their immediate
relatives rather accurately.

The 12th house rules loss, and therefore, the 12th house from any house is the loss of that house. For example the 7th
house rules marriage and any other types of partnerships. Therefore the 6th house which is 12th from the 7th rules over
loss of the partner or loss of the spouse. One way to know some of the good and bad things governed by a house is to
judge the house that is 12 from it and that it is 12th from. For example, take the 9th house which rules fortune, religion or
Dharma, the father, the spiritual master and guru, and God's grace. The 9th house is 12th from the 10th house. This means
that the house of Dharma or religion is the house of loss to our house of career, profession and position. Does this make
sense? Does religion or Dharma drain away the energy of our career? According to the Vedic system of philosophy, yes it
does. The truth is that the creation itself is set up in such a way to say yes to this important question. The Vedic house
system reflects the utter truth surrounding us on all sides. The answer is automatically yes and so you can further deduce
that until you understand that "religion" drains "position" you have not understood either these words, or the real nature of
these houses. The 10th house rules not only career, but mainly it rules rise and status in material life. It rules standing up tall
and straight and getting some position, some fame, some power in this material life. The 9th house is definitely detrimental
to this because it is the aim of real dharma or real religion to end our pride in this our material lives, to bring us to a point
where we see ourselves as servants of God, humble, dependent, and so forth. This is definitely contrary to a rise in power
and position in this material life. To even want to be powerful in this material life means to identify ourselves as our material
body. Vedic religion comes and tells us as it's first lesson that we are not this body and thus immediately deals a pretty
serious blow to our material ego. To make progress in spiritual life, one begins by understanding that they are not the body.
This very first lesson is detrimental to the 10th house, or the house of "pratishta" (material position). Later, as we progress in
spiritual life, our material ego is replaced with a spiritual ego. The 9th house, the house of true fortune and grace from
above, can easily replace and give more to us than anything that we can hope to receive from the 10th house.

37

So, to continue with the "12th house" relationship examples:

The first house is 12th from the 2nd, meaning that our body drains away our money, and indeed, paying for our bodies
shelter, food and medical bills, are some serious wealth drainers- so the 1st house (our body) is a serious cause of loss
(12th) to our wealth (2nd).
The 2nd house is 12th from the 3rd house. The 2nd house rules, amongst other things, our family members and the 3rd
house amongst other things rules courage. Therefore, it would not be incorrect to say that our family drains away our
courage. Indeed, it is often said that a great person is not recognized in their own land. Perhaps this is because of another
saying, "familiarity breeds contempt." The people who know us best all our lives are the ones who are most likely to put us
down and tell us we won't achieve something. Often our own family members work to our great detriment in life. So in this
way, the 2nd house is 12th from the 3rd house showing that according to nature and reality, family often drains us of
courage. Due to their attachment for us also, they often don't want to see us venture out to "take on" life. Rather, they want
us to stay home (in the 2nd house), and thus they drain away our courage.
Next, the 3rd house is 12th from the 4th house. The 4th house amongst other things rules mother and the 3rd house
amongst other things rules younger siblings. Is it true that younger siblings drain away the energy of our mother. Yes,
indeed, especially in relation to us. As soon as there is born a younger brother or sister, the mother's attention turns to them
and away from us. Often times we find the child who was the youngest baby beating up on the new baby because the new
baby is responsible for taking away the mother's affection. So in this way, our third house is inimical to our fourth house.
Next the 4th house is 12th to the 5th house. The 5th house amongst other things rules romance and the 4th as already
mentioned, mother. Is our mother often inimical to our romance? Indeed. We are least comfortable displaying our romance
in front of our mother, and often our mothers are not exactly immediately friendly towards those who we pick to be romantic
with.
Next, the 5th house is 12th to the 6th house. Amongst other things, the 5th house rules winning at the lottery and the 6th
house rules debts, therefore, it is easy to understand that if we win at the lottery, we can cure all our debt problems. So, the
5th house which is a money house, puts an end to the 6th house, the house of debts.
The 6th house is 12th to the 7th house. The 7th house rules the other people in our life, our partners, our spouses mainly.
The 6th house ruling enemies, diseases and debts is naturally 12th to the 7th house. In modern life there is a saying, "Until
debt do we part" as a replacement to "Until death do we part," because, indeed, it is often debt that drives marriages crazy
and ultimately to the brink of divorce. So our debts (6th) are one of the worst things we can bring to our partner, and
therefore, our 6th house has a very negative effect on our 7th house affairs.
The 7th house is 12th to the 8th house. The 8th house rules the base of the spine, the genital and the seat of mysticism or
the kundalini chakra, the lower chakra. The 7th house ruling the spouse drains away the energy of the 8th house, because
the spouse offers us unlimited sex life which drains away the vital source of energy which is seated within the 8th house. It
is said that the 8th house rules mysticism. This is referring to the mystic processes of yoga such as Kundalini Yoga. Most of
the Yoga systems of India, especially the serious mystic processes, all assume the position of brahmachari or celibacy
because of the great need for the seminal energy regardless of the practitioners gender, in order to begin and sustain the
mental concentration required for these yogic processes.
The 8th house also rules longevity and the 7th house which amongst other things governs our love life, drains away our vital
energy decreasing our life span. This is the opinion of the Ayurvedic and other Vedic scriptures that deal with the energies
within the body. This does not mean that Vedic wisdom is anti-sex life exactly, but there is a price for every action. If you
want one thing, you have to give up those things opposed to it. For 8th house style Kundalini Yogic processes, retention of
the sexual energy is essential.

38

The 8th house rules independent endeavor to achieve mystic power. It is 12th to the 9th house. The 9th house rules the
receiving of power through the process of grace, revelation, or in other words, gifts from God. Therefore, the 9th house rules
really very pure religion because of its basis being dependence upon the supreme power, whereas the 8th house rules our
own individual, empirical endeavor to achieve mystic power through yoga and other difficult processes. So, since the 8th
house rules the approach to mystic power which is opposed to simply receiving grace from God, it is, therefore, 12th from
the 9th.
Also, on another level, the 9th house represents father. The 8th house, therefore, represents loss of father. Therefore, if we
find the 9th lord in the 8th house in a chart, it is often found that the person lost their father.
As mentioned earlier, the 9th house is 12th to the 10th house and indeed, true religion attempts to end our pride of
existence in this material world. It is said that pratishta, which means the attainment of position, name and fame in this
world, is one of the main enemies of the real spiritual seeker. So, when our 10th house comes under the control of our 9th
house, it becomes purified. If the 10th house and it's lord are stronger than the 9th house and its lord, then our attempt to
gain position and status in this life will be stronger than our spirituality.
The 10th house is 12th to the 11th house. The 10th house rules the attainment of position, status and eminence and our
career. The 11th house is called labha stana which means the house of desire. It rules friends, because we all desire to be
with our friends. It also rules hopes, wishes and dreams that we have. It also rules gains, so it is the house of the material
incoming current- the house of desire.
How is it that the 10th house then is 12th to the 11th house? Don't we work in order to fulfill desires? Indeed, the 11th is 2nd
from the 10th, meaning it is the place where the money of the career is stored. So we work in order to fulfill the 11th house.
But how is it that the 10th drains away the 11th? It is because when we want to go to attain status and eminence, we must
leave the comfortable place of our lolly-gagging dreams and hanging-out. We must stand up and work and go away from
our friends. Simply have desires (11th) is not the way to actually attain your goals (10th). It takes work (10th) and people
who are simply wanting to hang out with their dreams and wishes never seem to actually get to work. Therefore, for judging
if someone will actually do what they want, see if the 10th lord (doing) is stronger than the 11th lord (wanting). In general,
those planets which are hanging out in the eleventh house represent departments of life (the houses they lord) which will
always be "in a state of want" (11th), or in other words, "unfulfilled", indicating a lot of unfulfilled dreams or desires in life- not
a truly happy or successful way to live.
The 11th house is 12th from the 12th house. As mentioned, the 11th house is the house of desire and gains. The 12th
house is the natural house of losses. So, naturally, getting our desires fulfilled is the opposite of losing out. Fulfillment of
gain is the opposite of fulfillment of loss. Picture in your mind "Rudolph the red nosed reindeer". When they didn't let him
into any more reindeer games he was experiencing the 12th house energy- losses and disappointments. Later, when he
became appreciated and loved by one and all for being the "guiding light" on Santa's sleigh, he was experiencing a large
dose of "satisfaction", or 11th house energy. Often, what people "want" is not actually "good for them", if judging from the
perspective of their bodily health or spiritual growth. The eleventh house can be a killer in that it can drag us down the path
of slothful indulgence.
Lastly we come to the 12th house, which is the house of loss for the 1st house, which is our overall life. So, the 12th house
is the "overall" house of loss- not governing a particular type of loss, but rather, his signature is often required in a chart to
"seal the deal" regarding other losses.
