Concept for a Mobility & Communication Testbed

Bringing The Automobile And Internet Together At Stanford

Sven A. Beiker, Executive Director, June 2010

The Internet Comes to the Automobile – What Now?

Background
At the advent of WiMAX and other wireless
communication technology, high-speed internet will
become available in the automobile within the next
www
few years. However, connectivity in the car is not
new and has so far not been a viable business

model for providers. Therefore the technology
(communication) and service (content)
opportunities need to be investigated to determine
if and how mobility centric internet applications can
enrich safety, communication, information, and
enjoyment of drivers and passengers.
 Disciplines: ENG, H&S, BUS, LAW
Objectives
Implementation of an infrastructure to research,
develop, and test mobility-centric internet
applications
 Components: Vehicle data node, wireless
communication channels, backend server / tools

Concept of Internet-Enabled Media in the Automobile

Concept Study of interface, business model, use

cases etc. regarding preferred, useful,
dangerous mobility-centric applications
Needs Ubiquitous high-bandwidth
communication network, communication
endpoint in the car (in-dash or mobile
device), large diversity of applications
and users
Challenges Deployment of network (see before), in-
public testing
Next Steps Jun 2010 – open:
- Identify partners on- / off-campus
- Make infrastructure available
- Develop and test applications
