Thanks to its excellent positioning CropEnergies is well prepared for the strong growth of the
bioethanol market in Europe and will be one of the companies to take a major share in it. Together
with its subsidiaries in Germany, Belgium, France and the UK CropEnergies AG has expanded its
annual production capacities to approximately 1.3 million m of bioethanol.
Global growth
In 2015, the world production of bioethanol rose by 2.7% year over year to 115.1 million m. The
fuel sector accounted for over eighty percent (97.1 million m) of it. World leader in the production of
bioethanol is the USA with 57.5 million m, followed by Brazil with 30.0 million m.
For 2016, a slight decline of the global production is expected.
In the USA, bioethanol is mainly used as a 10% petrol additive. E10 is the standard petrol fuel there.
E15 has been available at petrol stations since January 2011.
In Brazil, it is offered both as a pure fuel (E100) and is also blended with conventional petrol with a
content of 20 to 25 vol.-%. Roughly 90% of the new vehicle registrations in Brazil are Flexible Fuel
Vehicles (FFVs) which can run on regular petrol, bioethanol or a mixture of both.
Growth in the EU
As a result of the Biofuels Directive of 2003, both the use and the production of bioethanol rose
steadily for a long time in the EU. Due to the declining demand for petrol fuel in the EU and the
fact that there were little or no changes in blending obligations, fuel ethanol consumption in the EU
3
declined by 2.6% to 5.2 (5.4) million m in 2015. The overall production of the EU declined slightly as
3
well to 7.1 (7.2) million m in 2015. Therefore the potential of bioethanol to reduce greenhouse gases
in a fast and cost-effective way is still not fully utilized.
With the implementation of the "Renewable Energies Directive", that prescribes a mandatory part of
10% renewable energies in the transport sector by 2020, the consumption of bioethanol in the EU is
expected to rise.

Growth in Germany
Germany still represents the largest market of bioethanol in the EU. In 2015, the German bioethanol
3
consumption amounted 1.5 million m . This represents a saving of approx. 1 billion litres of petrol.
After its introduction in 2011, E10 holds a constant share of 14% of the petrol fuel market by now.
So, E10 has established itself as the No. 2 petrol-engine fuel in Germany, ahead of Super-Plus and
regular grade petrol.
