TheBeginning
Thestudentswillgatheraroundtheclassroominacircle.Theteacherwillbringouttheballwith
multisyllabicwordsprewrittenonitanddiscussrulesandproceduresofthegame.Todaywearegoingtoplay
agamewithmultisyllabicwords.Wearealsogoingtopracticeusingtheoverheadthrow.Beforewestartour
game,weneedtogooversomerulesandprocedures.Whenyouthrowtheball,youneedtosaythenameofthe
personyouwanttothrowtoandthenthrowtheballusingtheoverhandthrowingtechnique.Theteacherwill
demonstrate.Whenyoucatchtheball,youwilllookatthewordoneofyourthumbsistouching.Youwillthen
saythewordfortheclasstohear.Afteryousaytheword,telltheclasshowmanysyllablesthewordhas.The
teacherwilldemonstrate.
TheMiddle
Thegamewillbeginandthestudentswilltaketurnsthrowingandcatchingtheballuntileachstudenthashada
turn.Theteacherswillhelpanystudentsdecodewordsiftheyneedanyassistance.Theteacherswillalso
interceptifthereareanystudentswhodonotfollowdirections.Whilethestudentsarereadingthewords,Ms.
Dupuiswillrecordtheirresponsesonachecklist.Ms.Dupuiswillalsohaveeachstudentdemonstratethe
techniqueoftheoverhandthrow.

Toassesshowmystudentsattainedtheobjective,Iwassuretodocumentwhetherornotthestudent
wasabletoreadtheword,determinehowmanysyllablesthewordhad,andiftheycouldsuccessfullythrowthe
balloverhanded.Ifthestudentcouldnotreadthewordandidentifyhowmanysyllablestherewere,theydidnot
obtaintheobjective.Ifthestudentwasunsuccessfulinthrowingtheballoverhand,theydidnotobtainthe
objective.Ihadastudentwhowasunabletoreadthewordsshepickedontheballandonestudentwhowas
unsuccessfulinthrowingtheballoverhand.Therewere18childrenwhoweresuccessfulinattainingthe
objectivesIhadsetforth.

Ibelievethatthestudentswereabletosuccessfullydecodemultisyllabicwords,soonanotherdaytheyshould
beabletocomeupwiththeirownmultisyllabicwords.Forthestudentwhodidnotmastertheobjectiveof
decodingthewords,Iwouldhavehercontinuetodecodewordswithassistancewhenneeded.Forthestudent
whowasunabletomastertheobjectiveofthrowingtheball,IwillworkwithhimduringrecessoraskthePE
teacherstoassistduringspecials.
Ifyouhavetoteachthislessonagain,whatmightyoudothesameandwhatmightyoudodifferently?
Iwouldhavegoneoverdirectionsmorebecausetheclasswasrowdywhenthelessonwasgoing.Ithinkthatthe
lessonwentreallywell,andthestudentsenjoyeditandattheendeverysinglestudentwasabletogivemea
multisyllabicword,butthestudentsweretalkingandgettingverywigglyandthrowingtheballtoohardattheir
classmates.IwouldhavemadestudentssitdowniftheydidntdothetechniqueexactlythewayIshowedthem.
Attheendofthelesson,whenthestudentsgavemetheirmultisyllabicword,manyofthemchosetodotheir
name.IthinkthatwouldhavebeenagreatwaytobeginthegameifIhadaskedthestudentshowmany
syllableswereintheirownnametoseeiftheywereabletoidentifythenumber.IthinkthatthewordsIchose
werereallyspreadthroughthedifferenttiers,soIwouldhavekeptthewordsthesame.
