Bushmen are potentially misleading. If ethnographic
analogies are to be meaningful, thcy must ba drnwn
from groups in comparabl~ ecological situations. \vho
have access to a similar range of pottbntinl food resources. There is no suggestion in the t~thnographicliterature thal hunters and gatherers living in cool temperate
areas of the world attempted to subsist primaril?. on
plant foods.
Recent interpretations of llesolithic subsistence llave
not been sequel to the development of a clcar understanding of the nutritional significanc.r of the a\-ailitble
food resources. h comp:~rison of the footl energy
(Calories) provideti by animal ant1 vegetable foods fot~ncl
in cool temperate environments indicates that therc are
considerable differences among the v;~r.ionskinds of animals and plants (Tables 1 and 2).
Most of the edible plants found in tc~inpeiLntetleciduous forests are extremely poor sour*cbesof food r n c ~ g y .
especially fungi, green rt.getat)les ;tntl laost bel*rirs.
Thrir protein content is usually mud1 lower than that
of meat or fish, and much of the carbohydr*:ttc they
contain is often in forms n hich cannot ht, ahsorb~tlb~
the human digestive system. This is the casr particularly wit11 wild green vrgetnbles.
It follows that the quantities of most vt>gct;ihle foods
that \\-ould be rcquirccl to sustain (,\-en small groups
for long periods of time, would hc enorn~ous! For
esnmplc,, in order to at.hievck the necessary r:~loric intake,
an active achllt male woultl rcqrrire cilher 50 kg. of ~ ; I W
