Introduction to Education

It is with great
Dr. Loureno Garcia,
enthusiasm that
I welcome you to the Principal
first issue of WEmattera Revere High
School Newsletter designed to broaden
our community of learners understanding of Student-Centered Learning (SCL).
We have created a vibrant SCL environment where student voice and
engagement have gained momentum to empower students to take
charge of their destiny. Success in the
21st century requires students to be
legitimate contributors to their own
development, including ability to make
informed decisions about their lives.
We facilitate learning so that students
become knowledge seekers, access
information, and solve problems. The
WEmatter Newsletter is a powerful vehicle through which RHS students will
continue to find their voice in school as
they explore the curriculum, share their
learning experiences and build meaningful relations with adults. I hope that
this first issue will ignite your passion, inspiration, and creativity as you
become an active WEmatter Newsletter contributor with fresh stories from
the field that depict student centered
practices in our school with fidelity and
authenticity.

I enjoy doing my own research, and this

class allows me to
do that. Since Im a
kinesthetic learner,
many of the activities
help me understand
the material so I can be
better prepared when it
comes to my formative
and summative assessment. Ms. Borgenson
facilitates the learning
in the class especially
if were having trouble
with a particular assignment or on whats
expected in order to complete the assessment. The other students also provide a great
deal of feedback. This enables us to work on
strengths and weaknesses. At the same time,
it helps us understand how crucial feedback

A Letter from
our Fearless
Leader

A true student-centered learning class Ive

taken this year is the Introduction to Education class taught by Ms. Borgeson. I have
aspirations of becoming a teacher; I want to
know about the process and how to teach
students according to their learning styles so
that they are always engaged.

is in the teaching
environment in order
to grow and exceed
or improve.

have had wonderful talks, and weve collaborated to discover what true Student-Centered
learning really is. The class integrates the use
of technology and uses the
flipped learning model. We
reassess what we learned,
apply it to the homework,
and then submit/review
answers, which are graded
electronically.
This class will definitely
help me with my career
goals. The students in Intro
to Education are completely focused on the students
that they want to teach. This class is a great
head start in becoming a public educator. Most
importantly, we are gaining a new perspective
and learning firsthand about what is necessary
to keep students engaged in their learning.

teachers have always
been leaders when it
comes to studentcentered learning.
Nancy Barile, NBCT,
From my early days at Newsletter Student
RHS, I watched colAdvisor
leagues like Biology
teacher, David Eatough, take his
students out to the marsh to explore
science up close and personal. I witnessed Cheryl Szymanskis students
teaching each other Calculus far into
the evening hours. And this year I was
moved by the work of Ms. Terenzis
Black Lit Matters class, who learned
about African-American quilts as text
and then each made a patch symbolizing their favorite African-American
author. Revere High provides tremendous opportunities for its students,
and Im happy to be part of the team
that will share those practices with
the community. Most importantly,
I wanted you to hear about that learning through the powerful voices of
our students. Who better to tell the
story of student-centered learning
than the students who experience it
every single day?

As part of Revere High Schools partnership with colleges, both Bunker

Hill Community College and Salem State University provide high school
students with the opportunity to enroll in college-level courses. Classes
are offered by the schools in fall and spring semesters and are free. Each
one counts as an AP credit, which can influence a students Grade Point
Average and class rank.

Students typically choose classes that are may not be offered by RHS. At BHCC, I am currently
taking Intro and Foundations of Education. The teachers I met went out of their way to help
me in class and to apply to college. I still talk with the students that were in my classes. Most
were enrolled as actual college students, so they were between 20 and 30 years old. I saw the
age difference as a great benefit because it pushed me to prove myself to them.
I am learning about excellent opportunities that I can take advantage of when I start college.
For example, a representative visited my education class to inform us of a practicum that
aspiring educators can take with a program called Citizen Schools. Lastly, it is cool to be the
age outlier. It is exhilarating to have academic discussions and debates with actual adults
who have real-world experience.
Dual enrollment allows high school students to experience college before they even start
their college application process. With an additional new academic environment, students
are able to explore interests that go beyond the walls of RHS. Revere High School offers an
enriching and truly, life-altering experience for its students by partnering with these colleges.
To register for dual enrollment courses at either BHCC or Salem State, visit Ms. Currie,
the College and Career Coordinator, whose office is in the Writing Center.

I am currently taking Personal Writing this semester, which is taught by Ms. Bulger. I decided
to take this class because I love to write, and I
aspire to become an author or screenwriter as
my future career. Writing is such an incredible
thing. Its a tool that
you can use to create
your very own world,
and it broadens your
mind. If you are an
aspiring writer and
wish to do anything
related with writing
as a career, this is the
perfect class for you
to take. In this class,
you can satisfy your
RHS Student
writing needs,
whether its creative or personal. The goals of
this class are to strengthen ones writing skills,
so if you are thinking about taking this class,
be prepared to do lots of writing and analyzing. This class will help many students improve
their writing and annotation skills. Each week
we receive the Article of the Week, which we
first annotate. We then write a one-paragraph
essay on the article. In this class, we write a lot

of essays and do a great deal of analysis and

text-based writing. For example, for one assignment, we picked an ad, and then analyzed
it using the rhetorical triangle, noting ethos,
pathos, or logos. Next, we created a new ad for
that specific company
using a different approach. For example,
sometimes we focused
more on ethos; other
times we focused on pathos. We also analyzed
a song of our choosing,
and we had to pick two
certain lyrics of the song
and analyze whether
the author was appealing to ethos, pathos, or
logos. Then we had to identify the type, audience, purpose, and effectiveness of the appeal.
Personal Writing is awesome, and students can
learn so much if they are interested in the art
of writing. I know I have. Ive even mastered
MLA formatting. Personal Writing is an incredible class, and Im positive that all you writing
nerds like me will enjoy it.

Good news! We now

have a PTO at RHS.
The groundwork is
done. We have a
Board, our bylaws,
and some great ideas.
Now what wed like
Adrienne Maguire,
is more parents who
RHS PTO President
want to get involved
with us. Our mission is
threefold- to enhance and support the
educational experience for our children
at Revere High School, to develop a
closer connection between school and
home by encouraging parental involvement, and to improve the environment
at RHS through volunteer and financial
support. With everyones help, we can
be successful. We are not a group that
will be all about meetings and fundraising, but we will have a little of both.
Join us every month at RHS where we
will discuss some of our ideas such as
grants for teachers and social events.
Our calendar is available here.
Feel free to contact me at
amaguire@.mec.edu with
any questions. Happy New Year!
