KEY TAKEAWAY
Stimulating ideas for group activity sessions on
Day 3 wherein syllabus re-thinking and lesson
plans devising activities for lecture and studio
courses will require integration of teachings aids
for facilitating educational objectives through a
spectrum of systems of learning including
interactive, experiential, and associative learning

PBL | Regeneration Based Checklist

- The Regeneration-Based Checklist for analysing Carbon-Neutral, Zero Net Energy
Design and Construction of buildings
- Malcolm Wells original Wilderness-Based Checklist for Design and Construction set the
wilderness as the model for design.
- His ratings from 1969 show a wilderness to score a perfect 1500 while a suburban
research lab would attain a negative score.

PBL | Regeneration Based

Checklist

Society of Building Science Educators

(SBSE) Version

PBL | Regeneration Based

Checklist
Application?
- Students rate their own / others / real-world projects and can iteratively,
through simulations improve them to achieve better scores
- Aids to understand what truly defines green?
- Sensitizes students on the importance to create positive energy buildings
(sources of energy)
- Available as an Excel Sheet, ready for use

PBL | A - Project Based Exercises

Pass on the design projects from one group to the other so they know how to assess, critique
and work out solutions to other designs.
Example:
Project 1: Conceptual design Group 1
Project 2: Passive design strategies Group 2
Project 3: Assess the passive design strategies and propose changes to further reduce
the thermal loads Group 3
Project 4: Apply sustainable cooling strategies Group 4
Project 5: Feasibility of net-zero energy design Group 5

PBL | B - Project Based Exercises

www.2030palette.org,
www.architecture30.org
- Free online platform
- Principles and actions to lowcarbon and resilient built
environment
- Swatch based resources
- For design professionals &
students

PBL | B - Project Based Exercises

- Could act as reading / research
material
- Divide students in groups an
initiate discussions / presentations
on various low-carbon building
concepts

PBL | Project Based Exercises

Why?
- Attachment to own designs, leading to inability to critique
- Enable critical thinking
- Collaboration, enhances integrative approach to design
- Fresh perspective

PBL | Real World Projects (Rebuilding Pomo

Valley)
The Case
Seven fires in Pamo Valley,
San Diego in summer 2007
burnt hundred of houses
Most houses were severely
damaged or destroyed
completely
City went to Cal Poly
Pomona University / HMC
Architects

PBL | Real World Projects (Rebuilding Pomo

Valley)
The project?
- Pablo La Roche Rebuilding Pomo Valley project with Cal Poly
Pomona University / HMC architects, USA
- Students developed the initial design of two houses.
- The city of San Diego was interested in houses that were replicable,
fire resistant, blended with the environment, and cost.
- Students had to achieve these goals with a small carbon footprint and
reduced Energy Use Intensity.

PBL | Real World Projects (Rebuilding Pomo

Valley)
Carbon neutral
design process
developed by
author, developed
at Cal Poly
Pomona / HMC
were implemented
Use of radiant
walls, roofs.

PBL | Real World Projects (Rebuilding Pomo

Valley)
Climate analysis
through
Psychrometric
Charts.
Use of
regenerative
checklists
Study available as
a PDF

PBL | Real World Projects (Rebuilding Pomo

Valley)
Outcome
- Through real-world requirements (Integrating Practice-and
research-in teaching) students get exposed to real-world
client needs and budget
- Thrill and excitement to see the project built

PBL | Real World Projects

Murray Milne design project for the climatology class
Simple project
No design time
Focus on analysis and building performance of one project through the semester
Greatly enables critical thinking.

2. PBL | Real World Projects

Pablo La Roche project with HMC architects, USA
Real world requirements. Respond to real world client needs and budget. Thrill and
excitement to see the project built soon.
Bruce Haglund 4 different themed design projects
Different takeaways from each project. Real world interface to winning competitions to
winning grant for implementation
Murray Milne design project for the climatology class
Simple project. No design time. Focus on analysis and building performance of one project
through the semester. Greatly enables critical thinking.

ASSESSMENT | The Sustainability Literacy Test (SULITE)

Tool to assess and verify the sustainability literacy
Formulated by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at World Conference on
Education for Sustainable Development (Nagoya, Japan in November 2014) to answer
2 key questions:
How Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) can assess & report on their global performance?
Can universities be sure that they are producing sustainability literate graduates?

30 minute, 50 MCQ test

Aids in sensitising the students towards sustainability
More details on http://www.thesustainabilityliteracytest.org

ASSESSMENT | Socrative & Mentimeter (Apps)

Engage students inside & outside the class

Share/Send quizzes and educational exercises
Exit-Tickets feature (Socrative)
Voting with smartphones, increases interest
Objective Improves accessibility
Ease of assessment
Promotes open book/additional reading
Graphical Analysis tools

SIMULATION EXERCISES
Benefits?
- Avoid rote math
- What-if?
- Relation of variables
- Visualize the data
- When the answers are more
accessible, the questions are more
significant

SIMULATION EXERCISES
Simulations are like a
video game
Increases interactivity of
elements and interest

Simulation builds
intuition
