Job search requires a heavy amount of energy on the front end: perfecting the
resume, identifying opportunities, researching organizations, and making social
media connections with recruiters and decision makers. And all of that happens
before making it to the interview.

Then, theres the mental preparation that goes into practicing appropriate, valueladen, engaging and memorable interview responses. Once the interview cycle
has started though, its easy to feel like we finally made it, and things will just flow
from there. Not so.

Dont short change yourself by letting all

the front-end work that got you to this
point end up being for naught thats
how you can end up frustrated and
forgotten. Understand and leverage the
power of the follow-up email.

The fact is: the majority of your

competitors interviewing for the same
role you are will not follow up a) at all; b)
with the right contacts; or c) in the right
way. Thats why a powerful, well-crafted
follow-up series of emails can literally be
a game-changer for you.

But first, lets get what wont put you over the top out of the way. Stop checking
in and circling back. Clich language like this fails to demonstrate genuine
thought and effort it looks like you marked a date on your calendar and are just
firing off a quick message.

This is your CAREER were talking about, so just like you expended effort to tailor
your resume and customize your cover letter, make sure you do the same in your

follow-up email series. You have to grab the recruiters attention within mere
seconds and use your words to practically compel him to respond.

Additionally, keep it brief and simple. Far too often, recruiters are inundated with
dissertations. Your follow-up emails need to be limited to just a few sentences.
Short + sweet = higher chances of getting a response.

Finally, theres no point writing a

brilliant follow-up email if no
ones going to actually read it. So,
know this: subject lines are
absolutely critical to whether the
recruiter or decision maker even
opens your email. Statistics
released by DMR say the average
person who works in an office
receives 121 emails every day.
The email open rate is
approximately 30%, so you must
write a subject line that intrigues
the reader. And you have to keep
things short, because 40% of
people open emails on their mobile devices first, meaning its quite likely only an
email preview will be immediately visible.

TEMPLATE 1: THE JOB FAIR FORGET-ME-NOT EMAIL

TEMPLATE #1: THE JOB FAIR FORGET-ME-NOT EMAIL

WHEN TO SEND: The day you meet a company representative at a job fair
PURPOSE: The job fair is the place where it is easiest to literally get lost in the
crowd. Your only purpose in attending a job fair should be to get the business
cards of the people who are representing the companies in attendance. In other
words, you show up in person with the express intent of following up. Dont
realistically enter a job fair expecting either a significant interview or a hiring
decision.
SUBJECT LINE: Excited to explore opportunities w/ {Company}, {Persons First Name}!
Hi {Name}!
It was good to meet you at the recruiting event earlier. I appreciate the
information you shared with me about the {job title} position, and Im excited
to further explore opportunities with your team.
I've attached my resume for reference, and a few of the projects that I
mentioned as well.
By the way, even though you were the one at the job fair, if youre not
necessarily the person I should be speaking to on an ongoing basis, would you
mind directing me to the proper person and their contact information? Id
certainly appreciate it!
I look forward to exploring the opportunities!

TEMPLATE #2: THE RESUME REVIVAL EMAIL

WHEN TO SEND: 7-10 days after submitting your resume
PURPOSE: To revive the resume you already sent, because it seems to have been
met with silence. Re-emphasize the particular brand of value you bring to the
table, and re-state your close fit and alignment with the role. This email presents
a new or recent professional project, achievement or contribution relevant to the
position youre targeting.
SUBJECT LINE: Best Reason To Contact Me for the {Job Title} Role
Hi {Name}!
I recently posted for the {job title} position, and Im excited about the
opportunity to work for a company so heavily involved in {whatever you know
the company to be working on right now}.
Here are the reasons why you or your team should contact me about the role:
1. I am known as {1 to 2 points that speak to your reputation, such as one who
easily bridges between the technical team and senior management, or a rollup-your-sleeves leader who impacts virtually all aspects of the marketing cycle}
2. My successful achievements as a [relevant previous position title] strongly
position me to quickly learn your processes and succeed in the role.
3. Im have a certain knack for pulling everyone in the same direction, so they
know what the objectives are, and have fun doing them, especially in highpressure environments.
In addition to submitting my resume through {LinkedIn, your career portal}, Ive
attached my resume and cover letter further detailing my qualifications and
experiences. I hope to hear from you soon.

TEMPLATE #3: THE INSIGHTFUL POST-INTERVIEW EMAIL

WHEN TO SEND: The same day as your interview
PURPOSE: To thank the recruiter or hiring manager for his time, demonstrate
your interest in the role, and provide more detail regarding something you
discussed in the interview. Always end with something personal it shows you
were REALLY paying attention!
SUBJECT LINE: Thank You, {Persons Name}
Good Afternoon, {Name}!
Thank you again for your time today, I really enjoyed learning more about the
{job title} role and how youre currently working on {whatever the company is
working on right now}.
I genuinely believe in your product and your mission, and I would love to prove
to you and the team that I am the strongest fit for the role.
Heres the additional information on the {transformation initiative at the central
location} we discussed earlier. This was a project on which I really had the
opportunity to demonstrate my leadership and execution skills.
Kindly reach back out to me if you need anything else!
I look forward to our next conversation!
{Your Name}
P.S.: Enjoy your daughters upcoming college visit to The University of
Pittsburgh. Even though my husband was there for English, he / we had a few
friends who were in the Engineering school, which I know your daughter is
interested in, and I have always heard is very good!

TEMPLATE #4: THE DEADLINE IS DONE EMAIL

WHEN TO SEND: 2 days after the recruiter or hiring manager said they would let
you know a decision
PURPOSE: To find out the status of your candidacy when you havent heard
anything back in the time frame they indicated. They key here is to secure
yourself as top of mind for them, but you dont want to be obnoxious by putting
the employer on the defensive, calling attention to the missed deadline, or
demanding an answer.
What youre doing with this email is issuing a gentle reminder of why youre the
strongest fit for the role. Strut your stuff a little more in this email, by talking
about a great idea or offering another example of a success that demonstrates
your expertise. Reaching out to offer a business solution is something most
candidates dont doso it can set you apart and demonstrate your ability to take
initiative.
SUBJECT LINE: Still interested in the {job title} position
Hi {Name}!
I hope this note finds you well!
Since we last spoke, I couldnt stop thinking about our conversation about
{business challenge you discussed}. I wondered if the team has considered {your
idea for a solution}? I faced something similar at {previous company name} and
this {explain positive result}.
Also, you had mentioned that youd be making a decision for the {job title} role
by the end of last week. Do you have any updates on that timeline, please?
If theres anything else I need to do to facilitate your decision-making process,
please do not hesitate to ask!

Theres a reason to email instead of call: emails leave a paper trail, allow the
recruiter to properly look up your status information, eliminate phone tag, and,
most importantly, squash any desire on your part to leave a lengthy, nonsensical
voice mail for the recruiterwhich leads to the next pro tip!

Hold back on your emotions in your email follow-up series. In fact, you only have
1 emotion: enthusiasm! Regardless of any job search angst you may be feeling,
never present a tone in your emails that is accusatory or desperate.

Always continue your follow-up communications on the same email thread. This
allows the reader to easily scan and reference your earlier conversations.

Avoid social media stalking (unless you have methods to keep this kind of activity
anonymous). Failure to respect personal boundaries could send red flags about
your personal judgment. If youre already connected to the recruiter or decision
maker, for example, on LinkedIn, you may not need to friend the person on
Facebook, and you definitely should not post on their timeline or private message
the person asking about your status.
