Case Study 31
Governor supports
energy efficiency
According to George V.
Voinovich, Governor of Ohio,
Energy efficiency is playing an
increasingly important role in
economic development efforts,
not only in Ohio, but throughout
the world. Developing and using
energy efficient technology cuts
down on waste, promotes a
healthier environment and saves
money. The Governors Award

A winning system
The WaterFurnace Spectra series
forced air vertical heating and
cooling unit installed in the
cottage upheld the highest energy
efficiency standards. The 1 1/2
ton system was designed with
sheet metal duct systems to
supply heating and air conditioning to both levels. A radiant floor
heating system installed in the
slab foundation is heated by an 80
gallon domestic hot water heater
which also supplies potable water
to plumbing fixtures.
The 225 feet of vertical closed
loop pipes were installed by
Yoder Drilling and Geothermal
Incorporated out of Sugarcreek,
Ohio. The closed loop pipes use
the constant temperature of the
Earth to heat and cool the home.
In winter, water circulating
through the loop absorbs heat
from the warmer Earth and carries
it to the GeoExchange unit where
it is extracted, compressed to a
higher temperature and distributed
throughout the home. In the
summer, the unit removes heat
from the building and transfers it
back to the circulating water in
the underground closed loop
system where it is distributed into
the cooler Earth.
