Thinkofthetermvibrato,andyoumayimagineasingerswaveringvoiceoravioliniststwitchinghand.Ontheguitar,however,
vibratoisasteadyandusuallyslightfluctuationofpitch,mostoftenachievedbyrapidlybendingandreleasinganoteaslight
degree.Avibratocanaddwarmth,emotion,andlifetoasustainednote.
Thebesttimetoapplyvibratoiswheneveryouholdanoteforalongtime.Thatswhenyoucanaddsomeemotiontothenote.
Vibratonotonlygivesthenotemorewarmth,butitalsoincreasesthesustainperiodofthenote.Someguitarists,suchasblues
greatB.B.King,arerenownedfortheirexpressivevibratotechnique.Boththetabandstandardnotationindicateavibratoby
placingawavylineatthetopofthestaffoverthenotetowhichyouapplythetechnique.
Youcanproduceavibratoinseveralways:
Youcanslightlybendandreleaseanoteoverandoveragain,creatingawahwahwaheffect.Thelefthandtechnique
forthismethodisthesameasthetechniqueforbendingmoveafingerbackandforth,perpendiculartothestring,creating
afluctuationofpitch.Theaveragepitchofthistypeofvibratoisslightlyhigherthantheunalterednote.
Youcanveryrapidlyslideyourfingerbackandforthalongthelengthofastring,withinonefret.Thepitchbecomes
slightlysharperasyoumovetowardthenutandslightlyflatterasyoumovetowardthebridge.Consequently,theaverage
pitchofthevibratoisthesameastheunalterednote.Thistypeofvibratoisreservedalmostexclusivelyforplayingclassical
guitarwithnylonstrings.
Ifyourelectricguitarhasawhammybarmountedonit,youcanmovethebarupanddownwithyourrighthand,
creatingafluctuationinpitch.Inadditiontogivingyougreaterrhythmicflexibilityandpitchrange,thewhammybarenables
youtoaddvibratotoanopenstring.
Themostcommontypeofvibratoisthebendandreleasetype(whichisthefirsttypeofvibratointheprecedinglist).Toplaythis
typeofvibrato,supportyourvibratofingerwithotheravailablefingersbyplacingthemallonthestringatthesametime.Youcan
moveyourwholehandbyrotatingitatthewristandkeepingthefingerfixed,oryoucanmovejustyourfinger(s).Trybothways
andseewhichfeelsmostcomfortable.
Youmayfindthatplayingavibratoiseasierifyouanchoryourlefthandontheneckasyouplay.Squeezethenecka

Thenotationforavibratonevertellsyouhowquicklyorslowlytobendandreleasethatsuptoyou.Butregardlessofyour
speed,makesurethatyoukeepthefluctuationssteadyandeven.Thenotationdoestellyou,however,whethertomakethe
vibratonarrow(thatis,youbendthestringonlyslightlylessthanahalfstepforeachpulsation)orwide(youbendthestring
toagreaterdegreeaboutahalfstepormore).
Intheprecedingfigure,thea)measureshowsaregular(narrow)vibrato,andtheb)measureshowsawidevibrato,asindicated
bytheexaggeratedwavyline(withdeeperpeaksandvalleys).Tryplayingawidevibratowitheachfinger.Tryitatdifferentfrets
andondifferentstrings.
Ifthenotethatyoureholdingisabentnote,createthevibratobyreleasingandbending(insteadofbendingandreleasing)
becausethenotesalreadybentasyoustartthevibrato,whichmakestheaveragepitchlowerthanthebentnote,whichitself
producesthehighestpitchinthevibrato.
Topracticeplayingvibratos,playtheexamplesinthefollowingfigures,butaddavibratotothefinalnoteofeachfigure.Becareful
withthefirstfigurethelastnotehereisalreadybent,soyouneedtounbend(release)andbendthenotetoproducethevibrato.
Ifyouwant,finishoffeachvibratowithalittleslideoff.

The"8va"intheabovemusicmeansthatthenotesareplayedanoctave(12halfsteps)abovewheretheyarewritten.That'sonly
necessaryinthemusicalnotationjustplaythetabasit'swritten,andyou'llalreadybeplayinginthatupperoctave.

Becausetheyusenoopenstrings,youcanalsomovethesefingeringpatternsaroundtodifferentplacesonthenecksoyoucan
getafeelforaddingvibratoindifferentplaces.
