Most people enjoy looking up at the night sky on a clear night and seeing thousands of

stars. Human beings have always been fascinated by the stars in the sky. These resplendent
points of light are romantic and mysterious to many people, but for other people they are
important objects of study. These people are called astronomers and astrologers.
Astronomers study the stars to find out about the universe, the sun, other stars and the
planets; while astrologers study them to predict what is going to happen in a persons life.
Hundreds of years ago, many famous astronomers also gave astrological guidance. For
men, in the beginning of times, the sky was extremely important because both the sun and
the rain came from it. Priests observed and studied the sky, so they could give people
guidance about the best time for planting and collecting crops. They made many important
discoveries through their observations. For example, they developed calendars and learned
how to predict eclipses. Rulers and kings asked for guidance from these early priestastronomers. They frequently asked them to predict future events of all classes and this is
how Astrology started.
Astrologers study the position of stars and planets at the time of a persons birth, and then
tell what will happen in this persons life. They study the position of stars in order to predict
the future. These predictions are called horoscopes, and many people today believe that
they should look at their horoscope every day. Great rulers and even important people in
our time believe that the advice of astrologers is important.
Early astronomers and astrologers could only study stars with their eyes. The invention of
the telescope made it possible to study stars better and Astronomy began to develop as
science. Astronomers observed the positions of stars and the movement of the earth and
other planets in space. From these observations, they began to understand scientific laws
such as gravity and they disproved some old ideas such as the earth being the center of the
universe. We know, for example, that the earth is very small compared to other objects in
space. It is only one of the planets that revolve around the sun and the sun is just one of
billions of stars in over the galaxy, which is just one of millions of galaxies in the universe.
So, although Astronomy and Astrology study stars and started at about the same time in
history, today they are quite different.
