brunch for 300 guests on Sunday, July 25th went on sale on June
7th and have been selling briskly. Approximately 75% of the
tickets have been sold to date, so there is still an opportunity to
be a part of the Al Fresco experience. Al Fresco is a proud
celebration of local agricultural heritage with the menu being
sourced from area growers and producers. Guests gather under
crisp white tents at the picturesque setting provided by the historic
building for deliciously prepared food, live entertainment and an
amazing silent auction offering a wide array of art, crafts and
unique items sourced locally. The mouth watering menu this year
includes summer cucumber and raspberry soup with Pecorino
Romano shortbread crackers, thinly sliced Al Fresco sirloin steak
on field greens with chimichuri sauce, roasted Sheldon new potato
salad with fresh local herbs and green bean salad with roasted red
peppers. People always marvel at the ability of the Courthouse
to organize such a massive undertaking. The reality is that every
accomplishment starts with the decision to try and grows from
there. The Courthouse has always been blessed with enthusiastic
volunteers who willingly step forward to ensure the success of
the weekend. The planning sessions commence each August for
the following year with the level of energy building each month –
at this point, one month prior to the event, the energetic workers
are at full speed. Proceeds from this event support the many
enrichment programs offered at the Historic Salem Courthouse
located at 58 East Broadway in Salem. For information regarding

Knowles is a multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, and performer
appearing throughout the Tampa Bay area, and touring the Northeast
through the 2010 summer. His music has been enthusiastically
received by audiences throughout the U.S. Nathan is from the New
York/Vermont region, where he built a reputation as one of the
most versatile entertainers in the area. Wendy Bordwell, Salem NY
resident, has been involved with the local music scene for more
than a decade.in cabaret performances with Kevin McGuire at
Hubbard Hall and the Cambridge Hotel, as the duo “Tom and
Wendy,” as well as joining forces with Nathan Knowles on his
album “The Vermont Line”. Powerful vocals drive her performances,
while her light finger-picking and acoustic guitar accompany. She
studied Voice and Music at the University of Connecticut in Storrs,
and earned a B.F.A. in theater from Bennington College. She has
also been the driving force behind the community concert series
“Summer Sounds of Salem” since its inception in 2007. Their
performances are highlighted with original compositions, which
are rooted in their love of the area....making mention of local people,
familiar roadways and area landmarks. Nathan Knowles represents
the very best of Americana music. His music can be found on his
CD’s “Songbird” or “The Vermont Line”. Nathan has performed
with talents such as John Hartford and The Dillards to Bo Diddley,
and opened for Jerry Jeff Walker and Bad Company. His vast
knowledge of various musical styles allow him to put his own

WONDERFUL ENTERTAINMENT AT THE CCC

TALENT TRIALS. Fort Salem Theater was the venue for the
7th Annual Old Courthouse Talent Trials in Salem on Saturday,
June 5th. Fifteen contestants performed and the winner of the
youth division was Kellen Campbell of Cambridge who
skillfully accompanied himself on the piano while singing
“Sunday Morning”. Eagle Bridge resident, Morgan Renee
Hall, won the teen division with a beautifully sung rendition of
“Paparazzi”. Adult co-winner, Patty Mansmith of Salem
wowed the audience with her smoldering version of “All That
Jazz”. The second adult co-winner, Sarah Rogers of Salem,
treated the audience to a soulful rendition of “Hallelujah”
accompanying herself on the mandolin. The four winners will
return to the Fort Salem Theater on Friday, August 27th and
Saturday, August 28th to perform at the Cabaret. Also on
hand to entertain the guests were the Susi Shoes Dancers and
returning 2009 winners, Boys ‘R Us, Jack McChesney, Aaron
Butler and Rebecca Butler. The proceeds from the successful
Talent Trials will benefit the many youth programs at the
Courthouse Community Center in Salem.

Sentiment for independence was crystallized by Common Sense, the astonishingly successful pamphlet by
Thomas Paine. It sold over 150,000 copies in the spring of 1776; copies were passed from hand to hand and
read aloud at taverns in every colony. General George Washington was especially impressed and he had it
read aloud to his soldiers. Paine’s forceful argument convinced the nation that the English Empire was a dead
weight on American aspirations, and the time was now to become independent. Support for the King evaporated
after Americans digested Paine’s philippic. Not only was liberty at risk under monarchy, Paine said, but so was
peace, as monarchs had little else to do but lay “the world in blood and ashes.” Paine convinced his readers
that independence was more likely to bring peace and prosperity than continued subservience to the empire.
But Paine added a millennial quality to the colonists’ struggle. This was not a revolt over taxation. The survival
of liberty was at stake, he argued, and if the American Revolution succeeded, generations yet unborn would
owe a debt of gratitude to their forebearers who struggled to defend—-and expand-—freedom. For more
