Introduction to Flexi BTS

Edge Technology is introduced on the existing GSM network and does not
compromise network performance and quality

Internal

Internal

Advantages of Flexi BTS

Movement to Third generation Applications
Flexibility in pricing due to lower costs for data capacity in High speed data
applications
1 to 24 TRXs in 1-6 sectors under 1 cabinet
There are No limitations on how to mix GSM and WCDMA in the cabinet
No Mother boards or Electronics (fans etc)
Only Front cabeling
Nokia Flexi EDGE BTS feeder less and Distibuted site sollutions refer to a
situation where the system module and Dual TRX modules are installed apart
from each other

Internal

Advantages of Flexi BTS

No cabinet is needed for a fully functional BTS

EXxA (FLEXI EDGE DUAL TRX):

Internal

The EXxA module is a dual TX/ RX unit, it is also known as DTRX-dual TRX.
It consists of
Two separate edge capable transceivers.
Base band for both transceivers.
The receivers have a diversity channel, which can be switched to either the
paired RX, or the RXDIV input connector.
The EXxA has a place to mount one or two white band combiner sub modules
(EWxA and /or EWxB) for two way or four way wide band combining as well as for
DP mode (EWxA only).
Each transceiver in the EXxA module is activated by a license key.

Internal

Description of the above diagram:

BUS: gigabit Ethernet connection to system module (ESMA).
ER_ _: power and control interface for the ERxA.
PWR: 48v input power from the system module.
DP: synchronous combining of both transmitters in the module to create one
GSM/ Edge carrier with increased power.
TxA, TxB: transmitter output, connects to ERxA.
RxA, B: main receiver inputs, connects to ERxA.
RxA Div, RxB Div: used in 4-way uplink Diversity, connects to ERxA.

Internal

The EX_A comes in four frequency variants. The frequencies of

operation for each of the 4 bands are as follows:

SYSTEM

RX (MHZ)

TX (MHZ)

EXTA (GSM
800)

824-849MHZ

869-894MHZ

EXGA(GSM 900) 880-915MHZ

1850-1910MHZ 19301990MHZ

Internal

ERxA (FLEXI EDGE DUAL DUPLEXER):

Internal

The ERxA variable gain dual duplex filter unit includes two TX and two RX
paths, the paths are identical in performance and function but not
necessarily in design, each path consists of a
duplex filter used to separate Tx and Rx signals.
variable gain LNAs used for each Rx path.
Integrated receiver splitter/ multicoupler.

integrated bias tee.

Return loss monitoring capabilities (VSWR monitoring).
I/O interface block.
RF loop function that is shared between the two paths.

Internal

ERxA (FLEXI EDGE DUAL DUPLEXER):

Internal

Internal

The ER_A comes in six frequency variants. The

frequencies of operation for each of the six bands are
as follows:

There are six variants:

EWGA or EWGB --- 850/ 900 MHz bands

EWDA or EWDB --- 1800 MHz band
EWPA or EWPB --- 1900 MHz band

Interfaces:
TxA, TxB Tx input from EXxA or EWxA
Out Tx output to ERxA or EWxA.

DP when DP operation used, to EXxA.

FIFA POWER SUPPLY:

FIFA receives DC power from the BTS through its backplane connectors
48 V input is used to generate +55 V supply voltage for the outdoor
units
3.3 V input is used to generate all operating voltages for internal
circuits
power consumption of a fully equipped FIFA is less than 76 W
If Flexi bus is connected to another indoor unit, Flexi bus power feed
should be turned off
power feed is controlled with Flexi Hub Manager
power feed status is also indicated by the Flexi bus LED on the FIFA
front panel
power feed is short-circuit protected

Internal

FIFA Q1 address:
In BTS polling, where Flexi EDGE BTS is Q1 bus master, FIFA is
assigned a fixed Q1 address of 4087
Flexi Hub Manager sets the address to the correct one by default
(if BTS Polling is selected in the Q1 Settings)

In BSC polling, where the BSC is acting as Q1 bus master, FIFA must be
assigned a unique Q1 address in the range 0 3999
each address must be unique on the same Q1 bus starting from
the BSC
a BSC can have multiple Q1 buses which are independent of each
other, andthe same Q1 addresses can be reused on each bus.

FLEXI EDGE BTS COMMISSIONING:

Commissioning wizard has two parts:
1. Collect parameters via wizard screens to construct an SCF
2. Send SCF to BTS and monitor progress

SCF provides lots of flexibility in commissioned process

FLEXI EDGE BTS MANAGER:

Remote commissioning:
Minimum requirement is an OMUSIG link
File based commissioning:
Complete SCF
. all parameters for that site in a single file.
one click commissioning

template (easy wizard) SCF

easy wizard product is available for ULTRASITE.
allows commissioning by end inexperienced user.
only site specifies need to be entered.

trials have shown that a secretary can commission the site with no training.

Internal

Partial SCF
an incomplete file that needs to be completed by the commissioner.
provides full flexibility but requires a more competent commissioner
required for those sites that do not have standard configuration.
Fallback
when connected to a commissioned site the existing SCF is uploaded,
if there are problems in new configuration the old configuration can be
restored.

UNDO COMMISSIONING:

FLEXI EDGE BTS MANAGER CONNECTIVITY:

Management interface version:
Version of interface between BTS manager and BTS
a. Minor mismatch --- some features may not be available.
b. Major mismatch --- should only download BTS software.

Internal

TROUBLESHOOTING METHODS:
1. Identifying faulty modules..
2. Performing routine maintenance tasks.

3. Disconnecting cables.
4. Replacing module fans.
5. Replacing module fans for dual TRX module (EXxA) and remote
tune combiner module (ECxA).

6. Replacing module fans for system module (ESMA), system
