Birds in Bosque

de Paz - Ecuador

Bosque de Paz (BdP) can be the ideal logistics and jumping-off point for birding the
extreme northern edge of the Ecuadorian Choc. With comfortable lodging and good
healthy food, this bi-national bed and breakfast is a short (20 minute) drive from Lita on a
first quality highway, and also the new road near Gualchn that has received a lot of birding
attention during 2011 begins about 15 km north. Also, on the 30 hectares of the BdP there
are great trails and successful reforestation areas that are habitat for about 60 species of
birds and 8 species of wild mammals.
Especially the fruit trees, Brasilian Cherry, Mango, Papaya, Pomarosa, Macadamia,
amongst others, have attracted fruit eaters and small wild life.
From BdP, hikes into the surrounding mountains can be organized (Palo Blanco), and daytrips to Cerro Golondrinas, Las Siete Cascadas and the Gualchan-Chical road will offer
huge suites of birds from the Lita Woodpecker to the Indigo Flowerpiercer and all the rest
of what these intense forests have to offer.
By visiting BdP, you support our efforts to restore destroyed habitats and improve
biodiversity. Also, for the planting of 5 trees or bamboos, you will receive a certificate and
be nominated Steward of Bosque de Paz
For the list of birds observed in and around BdP, visit our website: www.bospas.org
We offer lodging (Bed and Breakfast) in BdP. The rooms are simple but comfortable and
have a porch with hammock.
Costs: US$ 18 /person/night (breakfast included), meals on request: US$ 5,5
Our special focus: Parque de Bamb . We planted about 12 different types of giant
bamboo along the Guallupe creek and around water sources in the property, thus adding
more diversity and offering shelter to species such as the Brown Squirrel, the Guatusa, the
Armadillo, the Porcupine, the Corral Snake and the Jesus Christ Lizard.
A trail leads visitors through this bamboo park. With two days notice, a full explanation
about bamboo can be arranged on a tour, guided by Piet or one of the members of staff.

The list was updated by Maxime Zucca and Anne-Laure Dussuchat (Paris,
France) on March 18th, 2009.
A second update was made by Mark Gurney and Jacqui Weis between February
22 and 25 th, 2011.
The forth contribution was realized by Nelson Apolo (apolonelson@gmail.com),
between January 10th and 14 th 2012. He also added the birds he spotted in
Palo Blanco, a well preserved secondary cloudforest about 4 km uphill from
Bosque de Paz.
The village of El Limonal, where Bosque de Paz is located, is about 200 km
North of the capital Quito (4,5 hour drive in a private car), or 62 km North-West
of Ibarra. The road from Ibarra to El Limonal is asphalted and in very good
condition.
The trail in the Palo Blanco Forest can be muddy
