INTRODUCTION
As Vigan is known for its prominent ancestral houses that portrays a blend of
architecture from Spanish colonial times with Asian influence, its people also exert effort to
preserve the tradition of making jar. This much sought-after jar is called burnay. Burnay is
unglazed earthen jar, an industry that dates back to pre-colonial time when immigrants from
China came and settled in Vigan. It has small opening and its earlier use were for tea
drinking, storage for water and rice grain, container for salt, brown sugar, water, local wine
(basi) and bagoong (fermented fish). It is even said that basi and bagoong taste much better
when stored inside the burnay. Burnay jars also serves as a display for houses, gardens and
offices. Miniature versions of the jar are also used as pen holders.
Aside from its uses, burnay has improved the lifestyle of the local folks and still the
main source of income. It has reached the markets abroad especially in Europe. Local and
foreign traders have made contacts with factory owners to order from their current offerings
for burnay products to be done according to new buyers or market specification. Most of the
local and foreign traders are from Manila, Bulacan, Great Britain and Belgium. Through
these continuous demands of earthen jars, it has sustained the livelihood of many Chinese
and Fil-Chinese generations who own burnay factories or camarin, and most importantly the
preservation of the craft. The art of making burnay stood the test of time and continues to
showcase Filipinos artistry and craftsmanship. However, at present, this industry is one of the
most neglected industries.

One of the burnay factories or camarin inVigan is Ruby Pottery otherwise known as
Rubys Jar Factory. Rubys Jar Factory is one of the remaining factories of jar throughout the
country that produces export quality products, however, lack of skilled workers, market
information, bad weather and financial capability to purchase need equipment are the main
constraints in the growth.
In as much as this type of business preserves traditional craft and promotes
entrepreneurship which speeds up economic environment, it is vital then to look into its
operation to promote local skills and employment, efficient utilization of indigenous
materials, introduce creativity and increase local and national productivity
In view of the foregoing, this study will benefits the researchers and users to become
more aware about the history of pottery and stone wares and to widen their knowledge about
the production of jars, their types, uses and marketing of such products.
CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
A.BUSINESS PROFILE
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
There is no definite way of knowing when burnay has started. Most likely, it began
with the discovery of fire by prehistoric man. According to historical records, the Chinese
produced clay products like pottery as early as 3000 B.C. Even at that early date pottery was
already an art among the Chinese. History also records that the best pottery was produced by
the Chinese during the Tang, Sung and Ming dynasties. This articles made during these
periods had perfect shape, color and glaze.
Long before the Spanish conquest of the Philippines, there were already who were
engaged in this kind of activity. They were the Chinese businessmen who came from China.
The family Go known as Kwi-Saw came from Chinkang, a district of Chuan-Chua, province
of Fu-kien. This family was the most skilled and artistic in making jars, plates (porcelain),
vases and other breakable articles. This family and other Chinese immigrated in Vigan
sometime in 1400 to 1500. During their stay, they observed that the soil can be used in
making burnay. Since some of them married natives of Vigan, these groups of Chinese built
camarin for their burnay making in a barrio where it is near to the source of clay, the main
material used in making burnay. They have called the place as Bantayan or Pagbantayan

which was changed later to Pagburnayan due to the presence of many jars. At present, the
place is called Barangay VII.
Mr. Fidel A. Go, the third of the seven children of Ong Kay Go and Nazaria
Antiporda is the present owner-manager of a family business, Ruby Pottery. Ruby Pottery as
derived from a birthstone. Ruby Pottery is a famous and one of the biggest jar-making
factories in Vigans Pagburnayan district. Mr. Go has learned his craft from his father who
started the firing business in 1922. His father arrived at the Philippines in 1920. He was
taught to create one whenever their class was dismissed during his elementary years. He
worked so hard until he had perfected the process and began to help in the industry during
1961.When his father died in 1970; he took over the business at the age of 19. He had to
forego his college career to give in to his interest in jar making. During this time, the
business had only a cash of seven hundred and forty five pesos (Php 745.00) with four (4)
laborers and an output of fifty (50) jars in two days time.
his employees than to any profit he can receive. The success of the business depends on the
attitude of the one who manages it, thus, provides employment to the people in the locality
and gains loyalty to the customers. As the owner says, It is necessary to respect your
customers and to give consideration to your employees. Most of all become humble in every
aspect in order to attain success towards your business.

D. ACCOUNTING CONCEPT
FINANCING THE BUSINESS
The starting capital of the business is P745.00 twenty-two years from now. Since Sir
Go inherited the business, some equipment used was bought by his father. They invest the
beginning capital for buying materials used in making the potters wheel, for getting business
permit, and for the fire woods. Rubys Pottery is making the best possible jars out of
indigenous materials, hence; it is not necessary to outflow big amount of money in getting
the materials needed.

selling of the product. Expenses as an outflow results from bringing about the business such
as in production and other activities related to it.
Cash basis is being used in recognizing revenue and expenses. They recognize
revenue when cash is received from the customers and expenses when related amount is paid
out resulted from business operations. Thus, the measurement of their income statement is on

Consequently, the results of operations will change the owners equity or net assets of the
business. If there is a net income for a period of time, corresponding increases in the

When the business had boom in the industry during 90s, according to their
comparative income statement, they have gross sale of an estimate of less than P500, 000 per
year less an estimated expenses of P80, 000 to P180, 000 per year. So they have an estimated
net income of P200, 000 to P400, 000 per year. The purchasing power of money before is
much higher than now.
However, Rubys Pottery nowadays generates more or less P20, 000 to P30, 000
revenues per week. Consequently, an estimate of P80, 000 is being earned per month and an
estimate of P960, 000 per year if there is a continuous sale. But the owner said that the
incurrence of revenue is low and deduction of operating expenses such as electric bill,
22
telephone bill, renewal of license, wages of the employees and taxes from the government.
Hence, the net income per year is less than on what is estimated.

CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION
We cannot deny the fact that businesses are established just for one reason the
profit. This perception is quite ambiguous because for a business to become successful, it
should be gauged not solely on the basis of how much they earn but also on the kind of
community it creates and its contributions to the building of the better quality of life among
the people. And as one of the elements of a particular society, it must also constitute in
preserving, maintaining and enriching the culture not only for the benefit of the present
generation but also to those succeeding ones.
Undeniably, Ruby Pottery is one of those ideal business firms that we have to look up
to. They have a not-so-wide workplace, limited resources, and some unskilled workers. They
do not acquire the highest possible net income like any other typical business firms have
nowadays, but still they carry on their job. In as much as they exert a large amount of effort
in earning profit for their daily living, they are also continuously preserving our culture and
traditions and enhancing the artistry and craftsmanship of our fellowmen thus, uplifting our

24
economy and the whole of our society. Through the different historical or cultural products of
Vigan, most particularly the burnay products of Rubys Pottery are the reasons why it makes
this city very attractive, distinctive and a-place-to-go for the second, third, and even fourth
time around.
As mentioned earlier that Rubys Pottery is not earning as much as other entities,
however; they still continue its operations because of the compassion of Mr. Go to his
workers. Hes not only focused on the return he could get from running the business but also
on the betterment of his workers. The way he thinks about them and their families is a proof
that a family-and-friend relationship exists in the business world especially when you have a
long term engagement.
It is also a common scenario for a business to experience struggles, challenges and
downfalls but the way you manage to stand up again, stronger, firmer and bolder, despite the
adversities that may hinder you to achieve your goal is the proof that you are able. Somehow,
your business success relies on the attitude and mind-set of those people who operate,
handle, supervise or manage it. Just like the Rubys Pottery, according to Mr. Go, there was
one time wherein their business had undergone a callous issue with a customer who issued a
bouncing check for a sumptuous amount of money. This incident had really brought a great
loss to their business and even threatened their lives. But because of the determination,
perseverance and faith in God of Mr. Fidel Go, they eventually recovered their business, until
now, the industry of burnay-making is still there.
25
CHAPTER IV
RECOMMENDATION
Burnay industry has been prominent to the society not only towards traditions and
cultures of Filipinos but also to the economy for a long period of time. Therefore, it is
recommended that Rubys Pottery as well as other burnay industries must be improved and
cultivated in order to continue its operation despite of the dying condition of the business.
The provincial government must extend assistance fund to the business for growth
and development. They must also help in promoting the burnay products by including it as
features of Vigan Heritage now that it had been included as Seven Wonders Cities of the
World.
The owner and the workers must always work hand-in-hand to uplift the condition of
the business. It is only Sir Go and his son who are doing the molding process so they need

helper or sometime, replacement in doing such. Workers must undergo with training in
making the product to maintain the high quality. It will also fasten the production if the
workers are well trained and oriented.
The workplace also needs improvement. Since there were already tourist who visited
there, the working area must be organized well to attract more people. A little donation from
visitors will, perhaps, help the business from expanding and developing their facilities.
As Ilocanos, we should also patronize our own products. Buy some burnay products
the best possible we can as an act of nurturing the crafts we have.

We, Filipinos, are truly gifted with hands which can create something significant in
the society. Rubys Pottery is a proof that we have something to be proud of because of their
contributions towards our culture. The craftsmanship of the owner gives distinction to the
culture we have with other places.
Despite of the dying condition of Rubys Pottery, the determination and passion of Sir
Go in molding jars gives life to the business. It is firmly believe that even the business
sometimes fail in maintaining cash inflows, it never fail to gives credit to our own province.
Lastly, Rubys Pottery is a proof that hardwork and perseverance is needed in dealing
with business success.

In conducting our research about pottery making, we found out that everything took
into process. Pottery is the ceramic material which makes up potterywares, of which major
types include earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. The place where such wares are made is
also called a pottery (plural "potteries"). Pottery also refers to the art or craft of a potter or
the manufacture of pottery. In making a pottery, I can relate it in life because as long as you
have the patience in forming a pottery until it will be marketable you will attain a successful
career like Mr. Go.
-Jose Domalanta, Jr.
Molding a jar looks so easy but to experience how it is really is hard. Many fail to
create a single jar, many quit right after they started it. The process is like how life is. It is not

easy but if you pursue and never get tired of learning, surely you will succeed. It is an
achievement to create a single jar because every jar being created is molded by the sweat and

It is undeniable fact that whenever we talk about Vigan, the Heritage always comes
first on our minds. The cobblestone streets have always escorted us to an exploration into
primordial secrets and mysteries. But this highly desirable area of even-temperedness is a
city in the western coast with rich historical background.
Vigan is what we ought to be. Convivial citizens. Pleasurable products. Colorful
celebrations. Picturesque place. And Spanish houses.
Vigans an area of wide-ranging tranquility, free from usual pandemonium of the
cities. Although it is expected to deal with hustle and bustle, peace and order come amidst at
all times. With enthusiastic residents and natives, surely is anticipated a well-made
hospitability.
Pleasurable products. One of the simple pleasures of travel is discovering the
traditional pottery of Vigan. One of the famous potteries in Vigan is the Ruby Pottery
otherwise known as Ruby Jar Factory owned by Fidel Go. This kind of activity preserves the
Filipino culture and heritage by continuing a traditional art passed by our ancestors. In

making burnay, you need concentration and determination to shape the burnay properly. In
life, you also need proper discipline, concentration and determination to be a good person.

Every business has its own story, they say. Some are extremely making money, some
are just fine, some are slowly deteriorating and some continue their business because its
been their passion, it has a sentimental value, or it has already been a part of the culture in
the society where they belong. Because of this technical writing project, I had the chance to
evaluate, explore, experience, learn something and get inspired from the story of how the
Burnay-making of Mr. Fidel Go, a Filipino Folk National artist in Vigan started its journey,
how it had surpassed the different obstacles and challenges that came their way, and how it
continuously remain in the industry despite the different forces that may cause their downfall
and even the unstable status of our economy.
Most of us know that burnay has been regarded as one of the citys pride. That you cannot
achieve the 100% satisfaction of Vigan City tour if you will not experience how to make
burnay. In the duration of this study, I came to see in my own naked eyes what this burnaymaking business really all about. They toured us inside the factory and explained everything
that we had to see as we were walking. I even experienced how to make one. Just merely
looking on the demonstrator, I thought it was just simple and easy. But when I tried to
experience it on my own, it was really hard to mold the clay. It really needs several practices
in order to make one stunning burnay jar. I really enjoyed the making of this study. I felt the

hospitality of the owner as well as the employees working there. The owner was not that
conceited unlike others who look into themselves as the most superior. He was so very
accommodating. He even has a good sense of humor. One thing I will never forget is when
he told us that in business, or in life, rather, whenever you reached success, or whenever you
are on top, or how high the position you hold, never forget the spirit of humility. We must
remain humble at all times for we never know when well fall. Because life is like a wheel,
sometimes youre on top, sometimes youre down. Nothing in this world is stable, except of
change.

It is a great privileged to meet such a great business man who gave so much honor to
our province. I've seen how he handles the business and his workers. He is kind, comfortable
to work with, and optimistic. He resembles a true leader. The business of Mr. Fidel Go serves
as a living proof that business' are not just only for profit. Mr. Go not just wants to continue
the business of their family but also to preserve the Filipino culture. They are making high
quality potteries in a traditional way. At first, I thought it was just a piece of cake to make
one, but I was totally wrong. It requires a lot of patience, effort and sacrifices. So, to all the
pottery makers out there, I salute all of you!
