Re: An open letter to all Schuyler County elected officials and the Schuyler County community.
Dear Governor Cuomo:
As a Schuyler County Legislator, I, along with my fellow Legislator, Van Harp, am involved in the
ongoing DEC legal proceeding regarding the proposed LPG storage facility in the Town of Reading,
advocating for the concerns of our community.
Last week I sent an open letter to all Schuyler County elected town and village board members and the
Schuyler County community highlighting our concerns with the project, and urging them to resist
recent pressure by Crestwood to pass resolutions in support of their application. On the contrary, the
information that we set out in my letter provides ample grounds to join the 32 other adjoining upstate
municipalities that oppose the project.
A recent Schuyler County Legislature resolution states, the Legislature considers the safety and
wellbeing of its residents and visitors, preservation of natural resources, and the economic impact of
tourism related industry and activities to be among its highest priorities. On the contrary, they have
completely ignored their responsibility as elected officials to protect our community. I am attaching a
copy of my letter that sets out the basis for our views.
The risks of Crestwoods gas storage plan far outweigh the small benefit to our County, a mere 3-5
jobs. In comparison, the wine and tourism industries in our county provide $37.5 million in traveler
spending and $15.3 million in employment income in Schuyler County alone.
Please feel free to contact me for complete information on this important issue.
Sincerely,
Michael L. Lausell
Schuyler County Legislator
