CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SPECIAL ISSUE ON "APPLICATIONS OF

SOLAR ENERGY TO POWER SYSTEMS

A broad range of environmental, economic, social, political and technical factors and market forces have
led to the rapid deployment of solar power plants worldwide. Solar power plants include both
concentrating solar power (CSP) thermal plants and photovoltaic (PV) plants. The incorporation of these
sources of variable generation into power system planning and operations had led to the need for and
development of a broad array of new methods and tools to integrate solar generation into the power
system.
The installation of a large-scale solar generation has driven the need for reexamination of system
planning and operating practices at the distribution and transmission system level, given the increasing
level of variability and uncertainty being introduced with high levels of variable generation. The
objective of this special issue is to address, discuss, and present a broad range of considerations
associated with the application of solar generation on T&D systems, including but not limited to:
Forecasting of solar resource for use in dayahead, hour ahead, and real time operations tools
and planning processes pertaining to the integration of large-scale solar energy systems into the
electric power grid.
Distribution level integration of solar electric energy systems including model development,
interconnection studies, voltage regulation, short circuit current calculations, dynamic stability
and control system interactions.
Transmission level integration of solar electric energy systems including: models for
transmission planning studies including interconnection studies, voltage and frequency stability,
short circuit current calculations, and control system interactions
Transmission-level solar integration study methodology and tools, including generation
expansion planning, transmission expansion planning, unit commitment and production costing,
reliability planning, and flexibility planning methods and tools.
Research, development, and application of the next generation of grid-connected photovoltaic
inverters, including advanced functionality such as active voltage regulation, low-voltage ride
through, power curtailment, and advanced communications.
Industry case studies and use cases describing the planning, permitting, construction, operation,
and lessons learned from the installation and operation of large-scale solar power plants.
The articles in this special issue will emphasize the broad array of considerations associated with the
incorporation of large amounts of solar energy into power system planning, design, and operation.
Review papers in each of the topical areas are encouraged, as well as technical papers addressing new
approaches and methods for the design and operation of power systems with large amounts of solar
energy with a focus on real world applications.

Papers dealing with policy considerations; market design and operation; power system planning, design
and operations models and methods to deal with increasing levels of variability and uncertainty, and
evolution of the solar power systems are solicited.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
This special issue solicits original work that must not be under consideration for publication in other
venues. Twopage extended abstracts are solicited for the first round of reviews. Authors of selected
abstracts will be invited to submit the full papers in the second round.
Authors should refer to the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy author guidelines at
http://www.ieeepes.org/publications/informationforauthors for information about content and
formatting of submissions. In addition, consideration will be given to proposed papers longer than the
standard 8 pages (1012 pgs) if required for illustrative figures and tables, and twopart papers.
Please submit your 2-page abstract that give a summary of the proposed paper and discussions of
conclusion to the Manuscript Central review site for Sustainable Energy:
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tstepes. In the Manuscript Type dropdown box, the author should
choose Special Issue: Solar Energy.
IMPORTANT DATES
May 20th, 2011: Deadline for extended abstract (2-page) submission
Jul 20th, 2011: Completion for abstract reviews and author notification
Nov 20th, 2011: Deadline for full paper submission
