Chapter 1
The Problem and its Background
Introduction

Have you ever thought why people love to do sports? The answer may be easy
since sports are entertaining. They are like magics as they catch one's attention and give
pleasure as much as he needs. It freshens up one's and also prevents various diseases. In
every day that passes, thousands of people are getting into sports, however none of them
realizes the benefits and importance of it. Sport is an excellent means of spending one's
leisure, interesting pastime, and sometimes quite inexpensive. Participation in sports is
extremely important, children and young people in particular, need to do it for them to
develop good habits that they can continue into adulthood. There are several benefits that
people often do not consider, first, sports are required by people to be fit, smart and goodlooking. Second, it is entertaining due to many facts. Third, it is the huge market for
countries' economies. Health is also involved. Some of the health benefits of playing
sports includes the efficient functioning of the heart, controlled diabetes, lower
cholesterol levels, improved blood circulation, lower hypertension, and lower stress
levels. It also helps in weight management, toning of the muscles and strengthening of
bones.
In a community, no one can tell whether who are engaged in sports and who are
not, especially those youth in the generation today who have passions in basketball,
volleyball, badminton, table tennis, soccer, patintero, and so on and so forth. Everybody
have their different favorite sports, depending on what sports they used to play in their
environment. One of the most played sports is basketball. It can be played by men or
women. This game is not safe, because it may cause sprains, bone fractures and an
argument with playmates that will eventually lead to a fighting. Likewise in volleyball, in
just knowing how to pound a ball, one has the chance to get a score. Soccer can be
modified as the filthiest sport, because after playing the game, players will go home full
of mud on their clothes and body. Badminton is the game for those who wanted to get fit,
players will do their best to show their talent on hitting the shuttle cock using their

badminton rackets, just like in tennis, but its court is smaller than in badminton. Table
tennis is the mini version of tennis/lawn tennis, the table is more likely become the court
but they are not standing on it, it is fun to play but it is hard and awkward when playing
doubles, because the place is not wide enough for the player to move freely, the thing that
some people do not want in this game is the ball is very sensitive and bouncy. It is very
tiring to run for the ball and look for it. But even though what sport a person is inclined
to, there are still lots of benefits can get.

Background of the study

Sports are the greatest tool we have in todays society to help children develop
positive character traits and life values. (Greg Bach, Vice President of Communications
for the National Alliance for Youth Sports)
Youth will learn the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, perseverance,
respect for authority, rules, and how to win with class and lose with dignity. Furthermore,
sports league is a group of sport teams or individual athletes that compete against each
other in a specific sport. At its simplest, it may be a local group of amateur athletes who
form teams among themselves.
According to Hayden Sowers, as our society becomes more sedentary, more of
our young people are wasting their days by coming home from school and playing Xbox
or surfing the web. After-school sports programs offer an alternative to this waste of time.
Local sports programs play an important role in the community as well as with all
individuals who participate. Participation in sports not only aids physical and mental
maturation, but it also has numerous positive effects later in life. It is very important that
youth get involved in the programs that result from the hard work of many people in our

community. Not only does participation in these programs offer excitement and fun, it
also offers numerous physical and emotional benefits. The physical activity that results
from participating in sports has been found to build healthy bones and muscle, reduce the
risk of chronic disease, and reduce the chance of being overweight.
Being involved in athletic experiences is not just about winning or losing, says
Dr. Joel Fish, Director of the Center of Sports Psychology. Athletes view competitions on
and off the field as opportunities to learn from their successes and failures. They try hard
and pursue excellence, not perfection. Learning to have a positive outlook on an
experience is important to anyone especially to youth. Part of being an athlete is learning
how to persist through difficult tasks, especially when the going gets tough. Sports helps
kids learn techniques to deal with great pressure.
Learning how to play fair is one of the most important lessons kids gain from
participating in youth sports. All athletes experience the thrill of victory and the agony of
defeat, but when they can win with humility and lose with pride, they leave the field with
improved character. When kids get involved in team sports from a young age, they are
taught to value playing by the rules. (Dr. Joel Fish)

Theoretical Framework
The following theories stated are used to support the study:
Empowerment Theory
Empowerment Theory refers to the experience of personal growth and an
improvement in self-definition that occurs as a result of the development of capabilities
and proficiencies (Staples 1990). Another definition suggests that empowerment is a
combination of personal strengths, initiative, and natural helping systems to bring about

change (Perkins & Zitmmerman, 1995). This theory can be applied to community
development by empowering the people within the community to develop their own
community. The theory can adapt to other disciplines like Sociology.
This theory proves that there is strength in unity. This applies multiple activities to
help youth gain an understanding about the various communities they belong and where
people work and live. Learning and implementing activities like joining sports leagues
can build unity in the community.
Multiple Intelligence Theory
Howard Gardner of Harvard has identified seven distinct intelligences. This
theory has emerged from recent cognitive research and "documents the extent to which
students possess different kinds of minds and therefore learn, remember, perform, and
understand in different ways," according to Gardner (1991). According to this theory, "we
are all able to know the world through language, logical-mathematical analysis, spatial
representation, musical thinking, the use of the body to solve problems or to make things,
an understanding of other individuals, and an understanding of ourselves. Where
individuals differ is in the strength of these intelligences - the so-called profile of
intelligences -and in the ways in which such intelligences are invoked and combined to
carry out different tasks, solve diverse problems, and progress in various domains."
Gardner says that these differences "challenge an educational system that assumes that
everyone can learn the same materials in the same way and that a uniform, universal
measure suffices to test student learning. Indeed, as currently constituted, our educational
system is heavily biased toward linguistic modes of instruction and assessment and, to a
somewhat lesser degree, toward logical-quantitative modes as well." Gardner argues that
"a contrasting set of assumptions is more likely to be educationally effective. Students
learn in ways that are identifiably distinctive. The broad spectrum of students - and

perhaps the society as a whole - would be better served if disciplines could be presented
in a numbers of ways and learning could be assessed through a variety of means." Some
of the learning styles are as follows:
Bodily-kinesthetic
It uses the body effectively, like a dancer or a surgeon. They like movement,
making things, touching. They communicate well through body language and be taught
through physical activity, hands-on learning, acting out, role playing. Tools include
equipment and real objects.
This kind of intelligence can help athlete to increase their body efficiently as well
as their speed, accuracy and agility. In addition to that, this will help Athletes body to be
used on playing for a long period of time.
Interpersonal
It refers about understanding and interacting with others. These students learn
through interaction. They have many friends, empathy for others and they are street
smarts. They can be taught through group activities, seminars, and dialogues. Tools
include the telephone, audio conferencing, time and attention from the instructor, video
conferencing, writing, computer conferencing, E-mail.
This kind of intelligence can help players to socialize and communicate to their
teammates. It can help them in the way they are interacting with others for them to have
unity and especially teamwork.
Intrapersonal
It is all about understanding one's own interests or goals. These learners tend to
shy away from others. They are in tune with their inner feelings; they have wisdom,

intuition and motivation, as well as a strong will, confidence and opinions. They can be
taught through independent study and introspection. Tools include books, creative
materials, diaries, privacy and time. They are the most independent of the learners.
When someone is playing there is only one thing that he needs to achieve and that
is to win. The team needs to have one goal without including their personal interests.
Self-confidence is one of the important thing that one must have to have confidence on
playing.

The paradigm of the study expressed the variables of the study. The input
contained the demographic profile of the respondents, age, gender and regularity of
joining Sports League. The process involved the administration of test questonnaires and
survey for the selected respondents. The output of this study aimed to know the impact

level of sports league in personal development among the respondents.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers wanted to find out the impact of sports league in personal
development on selected barangays in City of Cabuyao, Laguna.
It aims to answer the following questions:
1. What is the respondents demographic profile in terms of:
1.1. Gender;
1.2. Age; and
1.3 Regularity of joining Sports League?
2. What is the impact level of sports league in community development among the
respondents in terms of:
2.1 Youths Behaviour and Development;
2.2 Interpersonal Relationship;
2.3 Uniformity and Teamwork?
3. Is there any significant relationship between the demographic profile of the
respondents and the impact level of sports league in community development?

Hypothesis
Ho1. There is no significant relationship in the impact level of sports league in

personal development among the respondents.

Significance of the study

This study is beneficial not only to the researchers but also to the following:
Students. Sports leagues can help the students in terms of extra-curricular activities in
school.
Parents. They can help their children by supporting them to the sports they want to that
will make a better result.
Community. Sports league will help people to have unity and improve socialization
among the people.
Future Researcher. As a future researcher, it can help them to add improvement on the
community because sport league is one of the aspects that show the economic rate of the
society.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The researchers give emphasis on the impact of personal development

as

perceived by selected sport league players. This study distinguish the youths behaviour
and development, intrapersonal relationship and teamwork to enhance the progress of
community players on the selected barangay specifically on Cabuyao, Laguna.
The respondents of this study are the players on the selected barangay ages 14-20
either male of female.
