Topics to be covered
Chemical processes
Production of organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals and refinery operations

Biochemical processes
Production of bulk biochemicals and biorefineries

Broad course objectives: At the end of this course, you should be able to:

Develop a block diagram for the production of a bulk chemical, given appropriate
information; this information may have to be gathered by you
Select an appropriate reactor configuration for a given process
Design a separation system for a given process, both upstream and downstream of
reactor

Attendance policy: All students are expected to attend all lectures of this course. 80%
attendance is required for all students. Failure to meet this requirement leads to award of
DX grade. Please note that absence due to exigencies, medical and personal reasons are
all included in the 20% allowed absence. Attendance would not be marked even if you
produce medical certificate from IIT Hospital. Also ensure that you come to classes on time.
Late entries may not get attendance.

Examinations: You should not miss quizzes, mid-semester and end-semester


examinations. Quizzes are not repeated. The worst quiz marks are not counted toward your
grade. Make-up exams are given only for mid- and end-semester exams that too when
genuine medical certificate from IIT Hospital is produced. Note that the make-up exams
would be far tougher than the regular exams. It is in your own interest to plan your schedule,
stay fit and healthy for all the exams.
Grading policy: Grades are awarded on the basis of total marks obtained during the course
of semester. 90+, AA; 80-89, AB; 70-79, BB; 60-69, BC; 50-59, CC; 40-49, CD; 30-39, DD;
<30, FR. If you attend all classes, do your homeworks on your own, study well, you can get
good grades.
Distribution of total marks: Homeworks, 10%; quizzes, 10%; mid-semester exam, 30%;
end-semester examination, 50%.
