EDUW 690 Process of Education

Professional Goals
Fall 2015
Personal and Professional Goals Related to the Standards and Graduate Studies
1) WTS Standard 8 (Teachers know how to test for student progress). National Board

Standards Five Core Propositions 3 (Teachers are responsible for managing and
monitoring student learning). Middle Childhood Generalist Standards Statements
NBPTS 5 (Instructional Decision Making). Danielson Domain 1: Planning and
Preparation 1f (Designing student assessments). Danielson Domain 3: Instruction
3d (Using assessment in instruction).
The first area I would like to focus on is assessment in the classroom. I would like to
improve my ability to design meaningful assessments to measure student learning.
Through focusing on assessment, I hope to be able to use student assessments to
adjust the future instruction including differentiating the lessons. Without meaningful
assessments, it is hard to have a continual process where I can monitor student
learning and modify lessons to meet students needs. I plan to work with my grade
level team to create common assessments to use to measure the progress of all
students. We will create the assessments based upon the curriculum and the
common core state standards. These assessments will help me understand my
students to ensure the lesson objectives meet their needs. Currently, we have
assessments that somewhat align with our curriculum as well as the common core.
Id like to see a better process of pre and post assessments used in my grade level;
however, I think we first need to understand and design the assessments we are
using.

2) WTS Standard 1 (Teachers know the subjects they are teaching). National Board

Standards Five Core Propositions 2 (Teachers know the subjects they teach and how
to teach those subjects to students). Middle Childhood Generalist Standards
Statements NBPTS 4 (Knowledge of Content and Curriculum). Danielson Domain 1:
Planning and Preparation 1a (Demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy).
Danielson Domain 1: Planning and Preparation 1c (Setting Instructional Outcomes).
Danielson Domain 3: Instruction 3a (Communicating with students).
The second area I would like to focus on is the content I am teaching and setting
learning objectives for the students. I would like to spend time growing my
understanding of the current curriculum I deliver to my students. In addition, I would
like to connect the curriculum with the common core state standards. Throughout
this process, I would also like to create I can statements for my students to help them
better understand the learning objectives. With a clear understanding of the
connection between the standards and the curriculum, my students will perform
better on assessments. Furthermore, I will be able to determine additional lessons
that may be needed beyond the curriculum to address any common core standards

not addressed by the curriculum. At the moment, I have a solid understanding of the
curriculum I teach but I have not spent enough time connecting it to the common
core. Making those connections will improve my instruction and provide the students
with clear learning targets/objectives.

3) WTS Standard 4 (Teachers know how to teach). National Board Standards Five Core

Propositions 2 (Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those
subjects to students). Middle Childhood Generalist Standards Statements NBPTS 8
(Responsiveness to Change). Danielson Domain 2: The Classroom Environment - 2b
(Establishing a Culture for Learning). Danielson Domain 3: Instruction 3c (Engaging
Students in Learning).
Finally, I would like to focus on incorporating technology into the classroom to engage
students in learning. With the over emphasis on testing and data, I have found there
is a decrease in student engagement. Technology is a powerful tool to change that.
The same learning objectives can be met through use of technology with more
student participation. In addition to technology, Id like to use problem based
learning to get students excited about what we are learning and allow them to see
the connections to their everyday life. If students arent engaged, then learning cant
take place no matter what kind of lesson is planned. I look forward to bringing that
spark of excitement back into the classroom.
