ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LESSON PLAN

(Adapted from Madeline Hunters Research)

Student Name: Alessia Canosa
Date: January 31, 2017 Age Group: 5 6
years old
Grade: Grade 1
Unit/Subject: Data Management and Probability - Math
Materials: (List the materials needed for this lesson)
- White Board
- Pencils
- White Board Marker
- Glue
- Handout (How do you get to
- Scissors
school?)
- Privacy shields

Objectives: (What the students

should/learn/accomplish/master/understand as a result of the lesson)
The students will begin to learn how to collect and organize
primary data with assistance and as a group. The students will begin to
demonstrate how to create a pictograph on their own. The children will begin
to interpret the data on pictographs on their own.
- Anticipatory Set: (In what way will you activate their prior knowledge
and experience to help them relate to todays lesson?)
- I will ask the students if they remember what we learned the day
before.
- I will ask them questions such as:
o What is a pictograph?
o How do we know which has less or more on the graph?
- Teaching: (Step by step discussion for how the lesson will be taught)
- Instructional Input:
- What knowledge will you communicate to the students so that they
understand the objective of the lesson (film, tape, video, pictures, etc.)
- I will tell the children we are creating a pictograph on our own. I will
introduce the subject of the pictograph by showing the students the
handout to be completed.
- Guided Practise:
- What activities will the students perform under your supervision to
ensure that they are able to practise the material/concepts taught in
the lesson? How will you support students when errors are made?
- As a group the students will begin to answer questions as a group to
obtain data, to complete their own pictograph.
- Modeling:
- How will you demonstrate the skill or competence so the student will
also be able to do it? (Use of materials to show students examples of
what is expected as a final product of their work)
- I will model the expectation of the activity by going through the entire
handout step by step. Completing each task before moving on to the
next.
- Checking for Understanding:
- How will you check that the students have understood/learned the
objectives?
- I will ask the students questions related to the graphs created. They
will later record this data when creating their own pictographs.
- Questioning Strategies:
- What types of questions might you ask to probe higher level thinking?
- I will ask students how else might they be able to record this type of
data, and what they think about using pictographs.
- Closure:

Develop a statement that brings the lesson to an appropriate

conclusion. A statement of closure is the act of reviewing and clarifying
the key points of a lesson. It is used to:
1. Cue students to the fact that they are at the end of the lesson
2. Help organize student learning
3. Help students form a clearer picture of what the lesson is all about
- I will close the lesson by asking the children to obtain a privacy screen
(intended for children not to copy each other).
- While children are completing their handout, I will review the
pictograph information learned.
- Independent Practice:
- List homework or seatwork assignments the students will be expected
to complete in order to practice the material/skill without teacher
supervision
- The children will be given a handout with three sheets of paper. The
first paper will have the instructions and questions on it, the second
will have a blank graph, and the third will have pictures of modes of
transportation for the students to cut out and glue to the blank graph
to complete their own pictograph.
- As each student completes their work, they will approach me and I will
give them feedback on their individual pictographs.
- Reflection:
- What went well? Provide examples for how you know it went well.
- What didnt go well? Provide examples for how you know it didnt go
well
- What did you learn?
- What might you do differently next time you implement this same
experience and why?
- Did you have to make any adaptations or modifications? If so, what
were they?
- What type of experience might you plan to extend on this one?
