DOCSIS 3.1 Highlights

Speed: Support for up to 10 Gbit/s downstream and
2 Gbit/s upstream network capacity
Quality of Experience: Active Queue Management
improves responsiveness for gaming and web
Fluid Deployment Strategy: Backward compatibility
provides a flexible migration for MSOs
Cost Reduction: Up to 50% more data capacity over
the same spectrum relative to DOCSIS 3.0
Higher Capacity over Existing HFC Network: No
upgrade required. Supports more spectrum for
even more capacity

How Much Capacity?

Depends on the Network

Specifications provide roadmap to greater than:

10 Gbps downstream and 2 Gbps upstream capacity
First Generation minimum Cable Modem requirements:
Downstream: 24 D3.0 channels, plus 2 D3.1 channels ~4.5 Gbps
Upstream: 8 D3.0 channels plus 2 D3.1 channels ~1.4 Gbps
Existing 42 MHz split network (assuming spectrum available)
~4 Gbps downstream capacity
~200 Mbps upstream capacity
Flexibility to Grow Incrementally with Consumer Demand

Slide 6

Whats New?
Improves efficiency, moves more data across existing network

Orthogonal Frequency Division

Multiplexing (OFDM)
Forward Error Correction (FEC)
based on Low Density Parity
Check (LDPC)
Efficient modulations,
including 1024 and 4096 QAM
Options for additional HFC
spectrum

DOCSIS 3.1 StatusTesting & Certification

CableLabs has conducted 7 equipment interops since Dec.
2014; next one slated for January
More than two dozen vendors (27) have participated in
interops so far
CableLabs has completed 5 dry runs of pre-certification
equipment testing; testing rounds held monthly
Nearly two dozen (22) equipment makers participated in Sept.
21 Demo Day at CableLabs headquarters
CableLabs will certify DOCSIS 3.1 devices on rolling basis until
they pass muster, after theyve already completed dry run
testing phase
