Agriculture Management with

Geospatial Intelligence data

Capt Ahmad Imran
Managing Director

Geospatial: Data within a PLACE & TIME envelope. I.E.: all data
captured is stamped with the exact GPS location and time.
Intelligence: is DATA that has been:
Collected
Processed, and
Analysed
to meet specified needs and presented in a way that is appropriate to
the decision-making environment
This Intelligence is then disseminated via an online portal, to give
Decision Advantage/Insights intended to:
prevent surprise
capitalize on emerging opportunities
neutralize threats (inner & outer)
provide time to adapt to a changing situation

UAV/ DRONE TYPES

DRONE: An Unmanned Autonomous Vehicle (UAV).
A UAV can be flown/driven manually using radio controllers or
autonomously by onboard computers.
Nowadays most UAVs are
deployed using autonomous control. Data collection using drones is far
cheaper cost than airplane or satellite derived imagery.
As low-flying aircraft, drones can also collect data at a higher resolution.
Rapid post-processing of data also means a turnaround in a matter of
hours as opposed to days or months.

Precision Agriculture

Precision agriculture is a farming management concept

based on observing, measuring and responding to inter
and intra-field variability in crops.
Drone or UAV can capture highly accurate images of
plantation fields, covering up to hundreds of
hectares/acres in a single flight, at a far greater resolution
Allows farmer to precisely apply needed water, fertilizers,
or pesticides only where it is needed, instead of applying
the same amounts across a field
It can help to grow healthier livestock, produce more food
on less land, with less water and use less chemicals, use
less labour with less waste while simultaneously
protecting the environment.

Thermal imaging and multispectral cameras enable drones to do the following:

1. Identify animals that have a higher than normal
temperature.
2. Validate and count animals in a herd.
3. Identify macro nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus and
Potassium) in crops.
4. Identify moisture content in field.
5. Identify disease stress of plants not readily seen with
the naked eyes.
6. Plant counting Palm oil, coconut, cocoa etc
7. Application of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer
8. Topographic survey of land.
9. Identify drainage issues on land.
10. Plant /Tree Classification.

1. Agriculture - Sample use

When a plant goes into stress, its either due
to a water or fertiliser shortage, or because its
being attacked by a pest.
Using near-infrared sensors, can identify
stress in a plant 10 days before it becomes
visible to the eye
That 10-day warning could prevent largescale crop losses.
If a crop is being attacked by insects, the
whole area can be affected, not just one
farmer.
UAVs can help figure this out before it
spreads, and can save the whole area.

2. Precision Farming leveraging Geospatial Data

1.

Measure Variations over time:

a. Measure key characteristics
b. Measure them regularly and with precise geo data

2.

Analyse Variations:
a. Mapping & spatial trend
b. Classification

3.

Precision Decision Making - Results

a. Precision Planting - Optimum planting density
b. Precision Irrigation - Incr. Yield & Lower Costs
c. Track & Manage Diseases - Incr. Yield & Lower
Costs
d. Precision Fertilizer / Nutrient - Decrease in costs

4.

Assessment of Results
a. Assess results against objectives & goals

App 1: Geospatial - Precision Planting

Excellent opportunity for precision farming making full use of remote sensing and DEM
Auto-count plants
Create density maps that (reveals uneven planting)
Overlay with soil type maps

RESULT:
Organize terrain for higher planting density

1. Tree Counting

2. Create Density Map

3. Plant according to soil types

App 2: Geospatial - Precision Irrigation

Excellent opportunity for digital elevation maps (DEM)

Determine the flow of water
Identify areas prone to floods
Map out the drainage area
RESULT:
Redesign irrigation & drainage system to feed into areas most prone to dry spells and
low
Research has shown that yields can be increased by 20% by improving irrigation in
areas prone to dry spells. Rainfall can be stored in basins for later use.

1. Digital Elevation Map

2. Identify Flood Prone Area

3. Redesign Irrigation

App 3: Track & Manage Diseases

Insects and diseases can affect large

proportions of plantations and cause reduced
yields
Aerial NDVI can be used to monitor:
state of plants
plants in distress
Timely identifying affected plants and
managing diseased zones is crucial:
isolation trenching, ploughing, clearing,
burning and fallowing
Determine exact locations of affected areas
with a click of a mouse
Deploy ground teams for closer inspection
RESULT: Increased Yield

fertile

less fertile

water

App 4: Precision Fertilization

60% to 70% of cost in in growing plants is
related to fertilizers
Aerial NDVI can be used to monitor:

State of plants
State of growth (size)
Identify dry plants or plants in distress

Focusing on area of reduced growth in

order to maximise efficiency of fertilization
Determine exact locations of fertilization
areas using the Geospatial web portal

RESULT: Significant decrease in

fertilizer/nutrient costs.

Plantation Management
Our mobile application allows plantation managers to track issues while
on site, catalogue them, store their GPS location and assign tasks to their
staff.
Catalogued issues are superimposed on drone maps. This ensures
efficient plantation management as well as proper reporting to
management

Data is secured in a data vault

Data is secured with all industry standard security measures as used by
the banking industry.
Securely upload/download your data via SSL endpoints using HTTPS
protocol.
Extra security via Server Side Encryption (SSE) also available upon
request.
Full support of data access auditing available (who and when was a data
request made and what data was accessed)
2-step authentication via Mobile Phone Authentication also available to
secure access to online maps among end users (online banking like
security)
