Pastoral Impressions
By Fr. Bill
On the battlefield a chaplain encountered a soldier lying wounded
and in pain in a foxhole. Would
you like me to read you a passage from the Bible? asked the chaplain. The young soldier could
only respond, Im so thirsty. Immediately the
chaplain ran off, found a canteen, poured the man
a cup of water, and helped him drink. The soldier
squirmed aboutIm very uncomfortable, he
groaned. Again the chaplain without a second
thought stripped off his overcoat, rolled it in a ball
and placed it under the young mans head as a pillow. The soldier began to shiverIm so cold,
he whispered. The chaplain found a field blanket
and placed it over the injured man. Then the soldier looked the chaplain straight in the eye and
said. "Now if there is anything in that book that
will allow another person to do more than you
have already done for me, then please read it because I would like to hear it. The chaplain lived
the gospel message by the actions of his life. Todays readings from Scripture challenge us in a
similar way to be active Christians in all we do
and say.
Isaiah writes to the Hebrew people after their return from exile in Babylon. They were there because in the past the community had not treated
each other with love. If the people remove those
obstacles that drove them into exileoppression,
malicious speech, and false accusationsthen the
light will come. If the people demonstrate Gods
love to each other, then the Lord will answer their
prayers and fulfill their needs.
In the gospel Jesus tells the Jews that they must be
like salt to others. If, however, the people lose
their drive, their zeal for God, then the people will
be useless and trampled under foot. Others must
see the goodness in their acts and how they give
glory to God. We must bring Christ to all that we
do and to all whom we encounter. Make certain
that peers, superiors, and subordinates alike know
that you stand with God. What we do is very important. The chaplains unselfish actions spoke
more clearly to the soldier than any passage from
the Bible could have done. May the light of Christ
shine through us to brighten our world today and
each day of our lives!
