graduate. Nevada Alternate Assessment ( NAA) which is a standardize test given to students with
Individualized Education Plan or are consider to be English Language Learner in order to satisfy
their accommodations while still measuring their level of understanding. All juniors and lower
must take the other two End of Course Exams that include English I and English II.
Dangers of Standardized Assessments (E)
Students in todays educational system are exposed to a record number of
standardized assessments that students have to take. They have started to lose interest in all tests
and this is seen within the classroom. It is a tragedy, students have decreased their studying times
and are less likely to make up missing tests. They know that most tests are not important and
they have develop a dangerous mind set. Standardized assessment compares students scores to
the average score and each test will have their own grading criteria. This creates a lot of
competition between test takers that leads many to feel overwhelm and not try their best.
Standardized assessments have a lot of benefits by providing instructors with crucial information
about specific topics, however if overused they may create more harm than good.
Practicing Assessments Skills
After reading about standardized assessments I have learned a great deal and have
become interested in the application it has within my own Geometry class. I do not want to
overwhelm students by given them another traditional tests so I have chosen to create cloze test.
Cloze results are much different that your traditional ones, a good score is much lower than one
that would be considered good on more traditional tests (McKenna, pg. 46, 2014). The book
describes the three categories of scores which include Independent level 60 percent or higher,
Instructional level 40 to 59 percent, Frustration level 39 percent or lower (McKenna, pg. 46,
2014). I have taken this into consideration and have develop the grading scale found in this

document. The cloze test would test the students ability to analyze the selection given and use
content and terminology to arrive at the answer. Which is exactly the skill set which I want my
students to perform in this chapter, which is one of the reasons I have chosen this assessment.
