OAKSIDE OBSERVER

February, 2017
Happy Valentines Day!
Valentines Day is the Feast of St. Valentine celebrated on February 14th. Although
not a public holiday in any country, it is known as the holiday of love and affection.
One story of the origin of Valentines Day tells of St. Valentine of Rome who was
imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry, and for
ministering to Christians who were persecuted under the Roman empire. It first
became associated with romantic love in the 14th century when the tradition of courtly
love flourished. In 18th century England, it became popular for lovers to express their
love by presenting flowers and sweets and sending greeting cards, which were known
as Valentines cards. St. Valentines keys were often given to unlock the lovers heart
and also to children to ward off epilepsy, known as St. Valentines Malady. Hand written
cards were replaced by mass produced cards in the 19th century.
Since February is the romantic month, we would like to say Happy Anniversary to all of
those celebrating their 50th or more anniversary in 2017:

Our New Neighbors

Most of us know our new neighbor and Park employee, Ed Searles, at least by sight.
He can often be seen tooling around the Park in a golf cart, working for the Park.
Ed comes from Livone, Michigan and has been in Florida since 2005. In Michigan, he
worked for a fire protection company, doing electrical work on trucks. While in Florida,
he worked for Larry Myers Plumbing and then heard, through a friend, that Oakside
might be looking for a handyman. The rest, as they say, is history.
Eds father lives close by in the Morris Bridge area, and he has a cousin and aunt in
Sunnyside. He lives in a unit on Bayberry, which keeps him busy repairing and
refurbishing.
Ed plays guitar, though he has never had lessons. When he was 15, he bought a 1952
Fender guitar, which he has since sold. Since Ed is left handed, he has had to learn to
play the guitar with that handicap. He also enjoys sports, including football, hockey,
and baseball.

Say hello to Paul Pierce, the new owner at 6130 Lark Street. Originally from Ohio,
Paul now lives in West Virginia.
Widowed in September, 2016, Paul has 4 children, two boys and two girls, 8
grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He heard about Oakside from family and
friends and has one son living in Florida near Zephyrhills.
He worked for a power company and enjoys computers and models of airplanes and
helicopters. Paul does very little traveling, and says he is a home buddy. He loves
this area and likes the low rent and friendly people here at Oakside.

Newcomers to the Park from Machias, Maine, Algy and Amy Wood live at 6208 Lark
Street. Algy and Amy have been married for 47 years and have three sons, four
grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. Algy has a sister living in Tropical Acres
and a nephew in Wesley Chapel.
Last year Amy and Algy visited their friends, Barry & Jolene Wood on Royal Street here
in the Park. They enjoyed their visit and this year, when they decided to get a place of
their own, headed right for Oakside to see what units were available.
Algy is a Full Class Engineer and worked at the Downeast Community Hospital in
Machias. He and Amy first met when she was a Candystriper at that hospital. After
Amy graduated, she was also employed at the hospital. Later, Amy worked for the
Sheriffs Department, managing the kitchen at the jail.
