Features of the Software (check all that apply):

Assessment Monitoring/Reporting (Keeps track of student data and/or generates reports for
the teacher) Allows teacher to create customized lessons for students Multi-user or
collaborative functions with others in class Multi-user or collaborative functions with others
beyond local class Accessible to students beyond the school day Accessible via mobile
devices Multiple languages Safety, security, and/or privacy features
Strengths of the Software: Students can move through the activity at their own pace. The
worksheet given to the students along with the activity allows for teachers to edit the questions
and guide the students in looking at as many or as little of the click and learn as needed for the
lesson. This activity gives students some extra information that the students may want to look at if
they choose to.
Suggestions for Improvement: This activity would be better if it had an online assessment or
activity to go along with the information given. This would give the instructor automatic feedback
and this would allow the students to possibly be more interested in the follow up that goes with
the click and learn.
Standards Addressed:
SB2. Students will analyze how biological traits are passed on to successive generations.
b. Explain the role of DNA in storing and transmitting cellular information

Description of how to implement in the class:

The materials needed for this lesson are laptops, tablets, or smart phones, the click and learn
worksheet, and the chicken cell data sheet. The activity is student self-paced and includes whole group
discussion. Students will complete a click and learn online activity on the cell cycle. They will click
through prompts online that will, first, give a general overview of and information about the cell cycle.
Next, the activity allows you to click on the cell cycle wheel and learn about each stage individually.
Students will complete an overview worksheet. The click and learn activity will guide them in answering
these questions. This will broaden their knowledge of the cell cycle and all of its stages, specifically.
The worksheet will help students think about cell division, cell growth, and cell death and why these
things happen. This worksheet also helps the students reason through what happens when a cell
malfunctions and allows them to think about cancer and how this relates to the cell cycle. Teacher will
facilitate a discussion reflecting on this worksheet. Students will show their knowledge about the cell
cycle, how it divides, and how it relates to cancer. Lastly, students will be given data on the cell division
of a normal chicken stomach cell and a cancerous chicken stomach cell. They will analyze this data to
understand the differences in the cell cycle of a normal dividing cell and a cancerous dividing cell.

INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTWARE

In the class before the activity, the students will have completed a 3-question ticket out the door
pre-assessment on the cell cycle. The instructor should use this data to inform the discussion at the end
of the lesson, going over information that the students commonly missed on the pre-assessment. The
students will be quizzed on this information as formative assessment, and then the students will have a
test as summative assessment.
Students will be provided differentiation and support through frequent checks for understanding
through individual assistance, instructor questions to guide work, and group work. The click and learn
activity allows the students to get the information that they need, but also gives the students additional
information about the cell cycle. If students want more information, they can complete the entire click
and learn activity. Students are allowed to get help and clarification from others and are encouraged to
ask questions to better understand the information. Resources and assignments can be posted online,
regularly, for students to have access to extra help. The students would also reflect on their work in their
interactive science notebooks. This will allow the teacher to evaluate what the individual student needs
help on for each lesson.
