Sample demo script

This script follows the video and was created specifically for Russia with focus on beer drinks,
but you can always create your own path.
1. Login to VA (BICS/DVCS/DV/OBIEE) and create new VA project
2. Select upload file and chose the alco_data.xlsx from the local file system
3. For all *_PER_CAPITA, *_DRINKERS and PRICE measures you should set AVERAGE
aggregation rule, and upload the file

4. Choose YEAR and BEER_ALC and drop it to canvas, then change visualization type to
Line

Here we can see, that there is overall positive trend in beer consumption worldwide.
Here we can also ask the audience, how do they think, is a beer the most popular type
of alcohol? (Based on consumption of pure alcohol)
5. To answer the question we will add SPIRITS_AlC, WINE_ALC, OTHER_ALC to the values (Yaxis) section:

Here we can see that SPIRITS (green color here) is the most popular type of alcohol. It
was very close to BEER (blue) in 2006, but starting next year we faced high growth of
the SPIRITS. Is it because of the Financial Crisis of 2007-2008?:) Wine and other drinks
are far less popular.
6. Global consumption trends are clear for us now, but what about different regions? Select
REGION and BEER_PER_CAPITA and drop them to the left side of the canvas, after that
right click and sort it from high to low:

We use *_PER_CAPITA measure so that we wont be dependent on the population of the region.
Here we can see that Europe is the most drinking region for Beer. But what about other types
of alcohol?
7. To discover that we simply drag and drop SPIRITS_PER_CAPITA, WINE_PER_CAPITA,
OTHER_PER_CAPITA to Category(Y-Axis)

As we can see here, Europe is the most drinking region not only in BEER, but in total
also.
If we look more closely, Europe drinks WINE (orange color here) much more than all
other regions altogether!! Nevertheless America drinks more SPIRITS than Europe. And
OTHER (purple) types of alcohol drinks are consumed mostly by Africa.
8. Regions are good, but its not so clear, its too aggregated. Lets try to look at the
countries. Select COUNTRY and BEER_PER_CAPITA and drop them to the left side of the
canvas. Its not so informative at first sight, but we can sort them from high to low (right
click and sort):

To discover top-drinking countries we select several countries on top, and focus on them
(select -> right click -> keep selected). Here we can ask the audience, how do they think,
Russia (your country) included in the top list?
NB: Selecting countries on the bar chart doesnt work in current releases of the VA (tried
BICS/BI12c/DVCS in January 2016), seems like bug (because there are ~200 bars on
chart?). It was working fine in SC Trial BICS in June 2015 when the video was captured.

Here we can look at the worldwide top drinkers: Ireland, Czech etc. But there is no Russia!
9. We can simply add Russia using filter bar and see the results:

Here we can see that Russia drinks 3.62 liters of pure alcohol from Beer per year per
person! This is twice smaller than top countries in our rating!
10.OK, lets go back from top-beer-drinkers view (click on Remove Filter). So, when we talk
about countries and geography the best way to visualize data is the map. Move the bar
chart with countries to upper side of the canvas and change this visualization type to
Map. Move BEER_PER_CAPITA measure to Color Map Shape Section.

Here we can see dark blue central Europe with Beer leaders: Czech, Germany, Austria,
and light blue Russia.
11.The next step is to go from alcohol geography to demography. What percentages of
male and female adult population in each country regularly consume alcoholic drinks?
Lets see it on graph! Pick COUNTRY, MALE_DRINKERS_PERC, FEMALE_DRINKERS_PERC
and move that to the left from the map, adjust the size. TOTAL_ALC_PER_CAPITA move
to the color section, and set legend position to Bottom:

Any guesses who is the leader here? Again, its not about liters of consumed alcohol,
rather than regularity and frequency of consumption and percentage of the drinking
population. The TOP country here is. FRANCE! As we can see 96% of male population
and 93% of female drinks alcohol on regular basis! Apparently its wine and in small
amount
If we want to find Russia (or any country) we can simply click it on map, and the bubble
will light up. So for Russia its 74% for male and 62% is female. Not the highest results
12.The last step of our analysis is the most useful and practical! What about price for a
Beer in different countries? Where should you go if you want a Beer for less than 1$?

Lets compare countries on this measure! Select CONTRY and PRICE and move it in the
middle of the bottom section of the canvas. Focus on the graph clicking the button on
the top right corner of the graph.

Next we need to sort it from Low to High Values (Right click -> Sort).

Here we can see one country which outliers the rest. The most expensive place to drink
a Beer? Yes, its United Arab Emirates! But lets find most affordable, select several
countries on top, right click, keep selected:

Tajikistan, Tanzania, Czech, Ukraine should be on your travel list if you are a beer
lover! And regretfully for us, there is no Russia here.
13.And finally we can go back to the full canvas clear all the filters, hide panels and get a
nice clear infographic, which could be easily saved and shared!

Enjoy discovering!
