Thank you for this opportunity to provide continuing professional services to the Arlington Independent
School District (AISD). EFI Global, Inc. (EFI) has completed a mold assessment throughout the Nichols
Junior High School facility located at 2201 Ascension in Arlington, Texas. The mold assessment was
performed by Mr. Mickey Lewis a Texas licensed Mold Assessor Consultant on November 5, 2016.
Subsequent thereto, and at the request of AISD, Ms. Tracy L. Humber, a Texas licensed Mold Assessor
Consultant (MAC 0167) with EFIs Dallas office collected airborne mold samples on November 10 and 11,
2016 to determine ambient spore concentrations in various locations designated by AISD personnel. It
should be noted that during the mold assessment, EFI did not move bookcases, filing cabinets or other
furniture or fixtures including white boards, cork boards and the like. Further, inspections above ceilings
and crawlspace areas were not included as they are not occupied portions of the facility. During the
assessment and testing, the following observations were made:
EFI did not identify odors of concern that would likely be associated with poor indoor air quality.
No activities were observed that would likely contribute to poor air quality.
HVAC diffusers observed were clean and free of obstructions.
No new furnishings, fixtures or carpeting were observed which might be off-gassing.
No renovations were taking place which may have impacted overall indoor air quality.
No visible mold was observed, however water damaged ceilings (gypsum board) and lay-in tiles
were noted in the orchestra room, corridor outside the band hall, corridor outside room 101, 107,

109, 113, north corridor boys restroom, rooms 201, 204, 210, 211, tech labs 1&2, 2nd floor PTA
workroom, and storage room between rooms 404 and 406.
Water damaged thermal system insulation was also noted in rooms MA123, MA128, MA217,
MB213, MB217, and B221.
Fungal Air Sampling

EFI collected fungal air samples on Air-O-Cell cassettes as part of this investigation. The Air-O-Cell
cassette is a unique sampling device designed for the rapid collection and analysis of a wide range of
airborne particles, including fungal spores. Samples are collected by drawing air at a known rate of flow
across a sticky glass slide, which is subsequently removed from the cassette in the analytical laboratory
and analyzed via light microscopy at the standardized magnification of 600X, in accordance with ASTM
Method D7391-09 (Categorization and Quantification of Airborne Fungal Structures Inertial Impaction
Sample by Optical Microscopy). The results are reported as total spores observed, meaning they include
both viable and non-viable fungal spores. Unfortunately, this technique does not allow for the
differentiation between Aspergillus and Penicillium spores because they are morphologically identical.
Additionally, the technique does not allow for cultivation, or the identification of spores to the species
level, except in a few cases.
There are no government standards currently in effect for microbiological contaminants. As
recommended by the AIHA and ACGIH, interpretation of fungal air sampling is generally limited to the
comparison of the results of indoor air sampling to outdoor air sampling results. Indoor fungal aerosol
concentrations significantly higher than outdoor fungal aerosol concentrations indicate that indoor mold
growth may be occurring. If air sampling confirms the presence of one or more fungal genera present
indoors and not similarly present in outdoor air samples, it suggests that there may be a reservoir of
fungal growth indoors, especially if the fungal concentrations are high. This condition is also termed
amplification.
It must be emphasized that fungal contamination is a dynamic phenomenon and that species within an
area can change due to environmental conditions. Susceptible individuals may be affected by the
presence of non-toxic or non-pathogenic microbes that may emit volatile compounds (musty odors) from
the mycelia (fungal plant) or vapors from substrate breakdown.
Non-regulatory guidelines based on extensive field experience are used to quantitatively evaluate sample
results. Mold spore counts from samples collected inside the building that are below ambient levels or
below 2,000 spores/m3 total and less than 650 spores/m3 for individual mold organisms (such as
Aspergillus, Penicillium, etc.), whichever is greater, are considered normal for the screening method
utilized.
Results of Airborne Fungal Sampling November 10, 2016
None of the indoor airborne spore concentrations were found to exceed the total spore concentration of
the sample collected outside the building and none exceeded 2,000 spores/m3 total. The indoor air
samples collected in the facility were found to be relatively clean with concentrations ranging from below
the method detection limit (<40 spores/m3) to 720 spores/m3, while the outside concentration was 7,320
spores/m3. In addition, none of the concentrations of individual mold genera exceeded 650 spores/m3.

Several genera (Chaetomium, Drechslera / Bipolaris group, Curvularia) were identified at low levels
indoors that were not in the outside sample. Based upon overall cleanliness of the areas and lack of
visible mold, or other indicators of mold growth, it is EFIs professional opinion that these are these are
considered statistically insignificant or an anomaly.
Results of Airborne Fungal Sampling November 11, 2016

None of the indoor airborne spore concentrations were found to exceed the total spore concentration of
the sample collected outside the building and none exceeded 2,000 spores/m3 total. The indoor air
samples collected in the facility were found to be relatively clean with concentrations ranging from 40
spores/m3 to 600 spores/m3, while the outside concentration was 14,880 spores/m3. In addition, none of
the concentrations of individual mold genera exceeded 650 spores/m3.
Several genera (Curvularia and Aspergillus/Pencillium) were identified at low levels indoors that were
not in the outside sample, or slightly above the outdoor concentration. Based upon overall cleanliness of
the areas and lack of visible mold, or other indicators of mold growth, these are considered statistically
insignificant or an anomaly.
Conclusions:
The general conclusion provided as a result of our field assessment and observation activities is as
follows:
Based upon the visual observations (no visible mold) and airborne fungal sampling, it is our
opinion that the results are not indicative of a systemic mold issue in Nichols Junior High School.
EFI does recommend that the water-damaged ceiling tiles be replaced and periodically monitored
to insure that the source of water damage has been successfully mitigated.
As is typical with air sampling of this nature, results are only indicative of what was present at the time
and location the sampling occurred. In addition, changes in building conditions and occupancy may
substantially affect the results of similar testing performed at another time.
This limited indoor air quality sampling report has been prepared on behalf of and exclusively for the use
of the Arlington ISD. Should this report and the findings contained herein, in whole or in part, be
disseminated or conveyed to any other party or be used or relied upon by any other party, whole or in
part, any interpretations made, opinions formed, and conclusions drawn as a result of examining this
report, those interpretations, opinions, and conclusions will be those made, formed, and drawn solely by
that party.

Methods
Method: ASTM D7391-09. A standard spore trap reading consists of a 30% reading for small spores; 100% of the
sample is read for medium and large spores. A 100% reading is provided for containment samples, upon request, or
otherwise as noted. Use final spore concentrations, not raw spore counts, for interpretation of results.
Calculation: Spores/cubic meter = (Raw spore count)*(MDL)
Note: MDL (Minimum Detection Limit) is calculated based upon 1 raw spore count.
Moody Labs recommends two significant figures for calculated values based on ASTM D7391-09.
This report must not be used by the customer to claim product certification, approval, or endorsement by AIHA, ISO, or
any agency of the Federal Government.
