PART 3: TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

General description
Resintile Roof Tile is a resin bonded roof tile produced by
compression moulding, and its compliance SANS 10542.
Tiles are manufactured from a homogeneous blend made up of
graded sand and recycled waste plastic accurately sorted by
the certificate holder.
Resintile Roof Tile is regarded as lightweight roof tile and
comes with accessories such as ridge caps (round ridge)

Roof tile is 405 mm long, 318mm wide, 50mm high and

8mm.thick
Ridge cap is 325 mm long, 230mm wide, 115mm high and
8mm.thick.

It comes with various colours which are created with colour fast
pigments in the blending process. Bayer Chemicals, an ISO
listed international company, supplies Plastiworld Trading (Pty)
Ltd with these pigments.

Manufacture
Resintile Roof Tiles and are manufactured by Plastiworld
Trading (Pty) Ltd at their factory at Paarl, Western Cape.

Plastic sorting separates the mix of plastics into two groups,

referred to as soft and hard plastics, which are then
shredded in a grinder / shredder. The quality of the mix used is
checked on a regular basis by plastiworld (Pty) Ltd quality
control laboratory.
A bonding mass is prepared to improve the physio/chemical
properties by way of mixing the plastics with an extruder where
the plastics are melted. The outcoming melt mass is cooled for
15 30 minutes before placing into a grinder where it is
shredded into pellets.
Sand is prepared by feeding the sand into a screw fed machine
where the moisture content is reduced and extraneous
substances removed. The dry components are mixed in a
concrete mixer to a consistent mix of sand, melted plastic
pellets and masterbach. Colour pigments are mixed in a
concrete mixer to a consistent colour is obtained. The dry mix
is fed into a screw fed melting machine to generate a consistent
bonding of sand, polymer, masterbach and plastic.
The forming mass is weighed on exiting the screw fed machine
and placed on the bottom of plate of the moulds and evenly
spread. The upper mould plate is positioned and the forming
mass compressed, forming the tile. Tiles are removed from the
moulds and cooled for 25 to 30 minutes before inspecting the
tiles and trimming where necessary.

Agrment Certificate 2009/362: Resintile Roof Tile Page 10 of 17

Forming mass preparation is done in the screw fed melting
machine to generate consistent bonding mix of sand, polymer
mix and masterbach and melted plastic.
Completed tiles, meeting requirements, are stored in a vertical
position, not more than two rows high prior to packaging.

Site storage
Resintile Roof Tiles are packed in packs of 10 items in each,
strapped with polypropylene strapping. Packs are placed onto
wooden pallets vertically in 2 layers, 3 rows (total number of
packs is 60).

Safety Distances
All buildings using Resintile Roof Tile being a combustible
roofing material must conform to the relevant safety distance of
4,5 metres as determined by SANS 10400, part T, clause
TT12,2. (a minimum safety distance between two buildings with
combustible roofs of 9 meters).

Installation

Roof truss spacing

Prefabricated engineered trusses at 760 maximum centres
securely fastened onto 114x38mm S.A. Pine wall plates with 2
off twisted 4mm galvanized wire strands embedded a minimum
of 5 courses down in the brick wall.

Batten spacing
Tiling Battens are generally 38mm X 38mm timber with spacing
of battens commencing from the plaster batten positioned over
the outside face of the eaves wall (see figure 2, detail A) and
equally spaced up to the ridge batten. Maximum batten spacing
is 345mm.

SANS 952 . Polyolefin film for damp

The undertile membrane must be in accordance with SANS 952
and waterproofingin buildings or a membrane covered by a valid Agrement certificate.

Tiles are packed commencing from the eaves to ridge from left
from to right horizontally.
Each tile must be nailed to the tiling battens with 63mm
galvanized nails supplied by the manufacturer.

The ridge capping is constructed from two 50mm X 38mm

timber battens, one on top of the other, along the ridge centre
line with flashband applied over the ridge batten and sealing
the roof tiles on either side. Ridge capping tiles are positioned
and secured to the ridge batten with one 82mm long stainless
steel screw. Mortar should not be used to seal the ridges.

Agrment Certificate 2009/362: Resintile Roof Tile Page 11 of 17

The junction between the tiles and parapet walls are sealed
with flashband. An alternative is easyflash, the subject of
Agrement certificate 2008 / 344 or conventional galvanized
sheet iron.
Valleys are constructed in the conventional manner.

Care should be exercised when packing the roof tiles as the

tiles have a smooth finish, not as the conventional concrete tile,
and could be slippery, especially when wet. The same applies
to roofs after completion.
All construction must be carried out in accordance with good
building practice as discussed in the supplement to certificate,
by Agrement South Africa and the NHBRC home builders
manual, parts 1,2 & 3.

Maintenance requirements
In common with all roof coverings, Resintile Roof Tiles should
be regularly inspected. Maintenance recoating should be
carried out as in conventional concrete roof coverings.
The colour of the tile is created with colour fast pigments in the
blending process. Should Resintile Roof tiles not be factory
coated surface deterioration can be expected overtime which
will impair repainting.
