Ans 4. Given, Specific weight of the kerosene = 7.85*103 N/m3 = 7850 N/m3

Specific weight of kerosene

Specific gravity =
Specific weight of standard fluid (Water)

Specific weight of water = .g 1000 [kg / m3 ]x 9.81 [m/s2 ] = 9810 [N/m3 ]

7850
Specific gravity = 0.8
9810

Q5. Two capillary tubes are placed vertically in an open container of water. One tube has a
diameter of 2mm, and the other a diameter of 1 inch. In which tube will the water rise higher?
Ans 5. Given, One tube has diameter of 2 mm i.e. D1 = 2 mm
Another tube has a diameter of 1 inch i.e. D2 = 1 inch = 25.4 mm

The rise of water in capillary tube is given by,

4. .cos
h
.g.d

Where, = Surface tension of liquid

= Angle of contact
= Density of the liquid

d = Diameter of a capillary tube.

So, from the above equation rise of water in capillary tube is inversely proportional to a
diameter of tube. Therefore, lesser the diameter more will the rise of water in capillary
tube. Hence, tube of diameter D1 = 2mm will the water rise higher.

the height of water. Which will rise in the tube. Take specific weight of water at 20oC = 998
kg/m3. Take surface tension = 0.08 gm/cm and angle of contact = 60o.

Ans 10. Given, Surface tension = 0.08 gm/cm = 0.008 kg/m = 0.07848 N/m (1 kg = 9.81 N)
Angle of contact = 60o

Density of water at 20oC = 998 kg/m3

Diameter of a capillary tube d = 6 mm = 0.006 m
