and merchandising, and grew to symbolize
the entrepreneurial spirit of America. God’s
judgment started in New York when the

MAKE US GODS WHO SHALL GO

BEFORE US
Moses stayed on the mountain for 40 days
and received from the Lord all the laws that
were to govern the religious and secular life
of the Israelites. The Israelites felt
abandoned by Moses during his absence.
They went to Aaron and said to him, “up,
make us gods, who shall go before us; as for
this Moses, the man who brought us up out
of the land of Egypt, we do not know what
has become of him,” (Exodus 32:1).
These people had witnessed the greatest supernatural powers and acts of deliverance ever
encountered by the hand of God, yet, they were quickly persuaded by the supernatural forces to
backslide returning to their idolatry. They instantly desired to craft a symbol of their old god,
Baal, with their melted golden earrings, toe rings, and adornments. Aaron collected gold melted
it down, and constructed the image of a calf or young bull, a common symbol of the divine in
ancient Near Eastern religions. Then Israelites acknowledged the calf as their god. Aaron
announced a religious feast to take placed the next day.2
Ba‘al, more explicitly concerned with fertility, specifically cast in terms of human sexuality.
Worship of Ba‘al involved imitative magic, the performance of rituals, including sacred
prostitution, which were understood to bring vitality to Ba‘al. Basically, Ba‘al was the storm
god, the bringer of rain, and thus fertility, to the land. There was rivalry among the gods and a
struggle erupted between Yamm, the sea, and Ba‘al, the rain. With the help of his sister Anat, the
goddess of war, and Astarte, the goddess of earth and fertility, Ba‘al defeated Yamm, and his

The gods began to build a magnificent
house for Ba‘al so that he could be at
rest and provide abundant rain for the
earth. But Ba‘al was challenged by Mot
(or Mut), the god of death and the
underworld. Mot temporarily
triumphed and Ba‘al disappeared into
the underworld. Anat and Shapash, the
sun god, found Ba‘al, brought him back
to life, and restored him to his house. 4
Modern scholars have suggested that
ancient people often used “idols” not as
gods, but as “pedestals” on which they
imagined an invisible god to be
standing or riding; the Israelites who
clamored for ‘gods” may not have
perceived any contradiction between
creating images for such use and God’s
prohibition against idolatry.
Moses’ “anger burned hot, and he
threw the tables out of his hands and
broke them at the foot of the
mountain,” (Exodus 32:19). The
people had violated their covenant with
Yahweh. Moses “took the calf which
they had made, and burnt it with fire,
and ground it to powder, and scattered
it upon the water, and made the people
of Israel drink it,” (Vs.32: 20).
On Moses’ instructions, members of
the tribe of Levi put to death 3,000
Israelites who had worshiped the Calf.
The next morning Moses sought to
restore the people in God’s good
graces. He audaciously declared that if
Israel was not forgiven, “blot me, I

pray thee, out of the book which thou hast written” (Vs. 32:32).
Numbers 33-32, commands the children of Israel to “destroy all their engraved stones, destroy
all their molded images, and demolish all their high places.” There is more to these stones and
images and high places than just harmless native art; these had become the literal dwelling place
of demonic spirits, later in the New Testament called powers and principalities. 5
Worship of Baal. -- Jezebel Worshiped Baal that was a Phoenician god and she approached her
religion with a fanatic’s zeal. She came to Israel

an eternal flame burning in a large dish-shaped
brazier on the chapel’s altar.
Since the Ba‘alist was a nature cult, worshipers
joined the priests and temple prostitutes in sacred
orgies before the altar, especially at the new-year
celebration. They acted out the reproductive theme
so that the gods, who control earth and water, would
follow their example and improve the fertility of
agriculture, animals and man.
In time of crisis, such as famine or war, these cultists sacrificed firstborn children in the sacred
fire to summon the help of their gods. When some Israelite prophets opposed Jezebels’ policies,
she had several of them executed. 6
Ahaz was one who “in every single city of Judah he made high places to burn incense to
other gods, and provoked to anger the Lord God his fathers,” (2 Chronicles 28:23).
God had to execute judgment and punish Israel for what was frequently referred to by the
prophets as spiritual adultery. The Babylonian captivity was one such judgment.

July 9: NYPD investigators are searching for
whomever stole and destroyed the 200-pound
Statue of Liberty replica seen here.
Police in New York City are scrambling to
locate the producers of a YouTube video that
depicts a stolen replica of the Statue of Liberty
blindfolded, beheaded and smashed into pieces
— a display that one terror expert says is
intended to "instill fear" in everyday Americans.
The 59-second video shows the 8-foot, 200-
pound replica statue, which was stolen from a
Brooklyn coffee shop last month, being
decapitated and pulverized — accompanied by
the words "We don't want your freedom" and
"Death to America."s
The YouTube video shows a gloved
hand sawing off Lady Liberty's head
before smashing it.

The Bible is alive with stories relating to territorial spirits, (principalities, powers, ruler and
wicked spirits in high places). The following examples show from biblical testimony that God’s
people could positively discern the demonic powers and their effects upon their worshipers.

STRANGE GODS

EPICURUS, the founder of
the Epicurean sect, was born
at Athens, about A.M. 3663,

ZENO, the founder of the Stoic sect,
was born in the isle of Cyprus, about
thirty years before Christ. His disciples
were called Stoics from the Stoa, a
famous portico at Athens, where they
studied. Besides these two sects there
were two others which were famous at
this time; namely, the Academics and
the Peripatetics. The founder of the
first was the celebrated PLATO; and
the founder of the second, the no less
famous ARISTOTLE. These sects
professed a much purer doctrine than
the Epicureans and Stoics; and it does
not appear that they opposed the
apostles, nor did they enter into public
disputations with them. Against the
doctrines taught by the Epicureans and
Stoics, several parts of Paul's
discourse, in the following verses, are
directly pointed.
[What will this babbler say] The
word spermologos, which we translate
babbler, signifies literally, a collector
of seeds, and is the name of a small
bird that lives by picking up seeds on
the road." The epithet became applied
to persons who collected the sayings of
others, without order or method, and
detailed them among their companions

SPIRITS FROM THE SEA
