INTP PERSONALITY
Whether the chicken crossed the road or the road crossed the chicken depends on your
frame of reference.
Albert Einstein

The INTP personality type is fairly rare, making up only three percent of the
population, which is denitely a good thing for them, as there's nothing they'd be
more unhappy about than being "common". INTPs pride themselves on their
inventiveness and creativity, their unique perspective and vigorous intellect. Usually
known as the philosopher, the architect, or the dreamy professor, INTPs have been
responsible for many scientic discoveries throughout history.

THE UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING

INTPs are known for their brilliant theories and unrelenting logic - in fact, they
are considered the most logically precise of all the personality types.

They love patterns, and spotting discrepancies between statements could almost be
described as a hobby, making it a bad idea to lie to an INTP. This makes it ironic that
INTPs' word should always be taken with a grain of salt - it's not that they are
dishonest, but people with the INTP personality type tend to share thoughts that are
not fully developed, using others as a sounding board for ideas and theories in a
debate against themselves rather than as actual conversation partners.

This may make them appear unreliable, but in

reality no one is more enthusiastic and
capable of spotting a problem, drilling
through the endless factors and details that
encompass the issue and developing a
unique and viable solution than INTPs - just
don't expect punctual progress reports.
People who share the INTP personality type
aren't interested in practical, day-to-day activities and maintenance, but when they
nd an environment where their creative genius and potential can be expressed,
there is no limit to the time and energy INTPs will expend in developing an insightful
and unbiased solution.

WISDOM BEGINS IN WONDER

They may appear to drift about in an unending daydream, but INTPs' thought
process is unceasing, and their minds buzz with ideas from the moment they wake
up. This constant thinking can have the effect of making them look pensive and
detached, as they are often conducting full-edged debates in their own heads, but
really INTPs are quite relaxed and friendly when they are with people they know, or
who share their interests. However, this can be replaced by overwhelming shyness
when INTP personalities are among unfamiliar faces, and friendly banter can quickly
become combative if they believe their logical conclusions or theories are being
criticized.

When INTPs are particularly excited, the conversation can border on incoherence as
they try to explain the daisy-chain of logical conclusions that led to the formation of
their latest idea. Oftentimes, INTPs will opt to simply move on from a topic before it's
ever understood what they were trying to say, rather than try to lay things out in
plain terms.

The reverse can also be true when people explain their thought processes to INTPs in
terms of subjectivity and feeling. Imagine an immensely complicated clockwork,
taking in every fact and idea possible, processing them with a heavy dose of creative
reasoning and returning the most logically sound results available - this is how the
INTP mind works, and this type has little tolerance for an emotional monkey-wrench
jamming their machines.

LET THOSE WHO WOULD MOVE THE WORLD FIRST MOVE

THEMSELVES
Further, with Thinking (T) as one of their governing traits, INTPs are unlikely to
understand emotional complaints at all, and their friends won't nd a bedrock of

emotional support in them. People with the INTP personality type would much rather
make a series of logical suggestions for how to resolve the underlying issue, a
perspective that is not always welcomed by their Feeling (F) companions. This will
likely extend to most social conventions and goals as well, like planning dinners and
getting married, as INTPs are far more concerned with originality and ecient
results.

The one thing that really holds INTPs back is their restless and pervasive fear of
failure. INTP personalities are so prone to reassessing their own thoughts and
theories, worrying that they've missed some critical piece of the puzzle, that they can
stagnate, lost in an intangible world where their thoughts are never truly applied.
Overcoming this self-doubt stands as the greatest challenge INTPs are likely to face,
but the intellectual gifts - big and small - bestowed on the world when they do makes
it worth the ght.

Famous INTPs:

Socrates Rene Descartes Blaise Pascal Isaac Newton Carl Jung Albert Einstein James Madison

Dwight D. Eisenhower Gerald Ford

I always get INTP or INTJ, but either way I am always perceived as a cold sociopath by others and even by myself. I find
myself never wanting to be in a long-term relationship because I can never find someone who is intellectually stimulating.
Once I have emptied the contents of a persons mind, I find the relationship goes sour. I want an Intellectual enigma!
Someone who I can share a deep conversation with for hours about something less trivial like the weather or
sentiment-based movies!

I understand you too. An interesting and deep conversation for hours? At maximum I achieve some minutes,
then people start to look uncomfortable. To read Plato is my best advice (may be you already know why I say
so). Seriously speaking, for a long term relationship, you have two options in my opinion:
1_ try with academic people (faculty of philosophy, physics, mathematics, logics etc.) and find people with
interests similar to yours. Time ago it was difficult, but now you can find a community for almost everything you
can imagine.
2_ find a person who makes your life better and you like for non-intellectual reasons, so you could have time
and the right mind set for a deep intellectual dialogue with your peers,
from an INTJ or INTP in every test I have made in the last 20 years.

Eh... same here, INTP this time (INTJ for the past 2 years) and INTP before that... Think all INTP's / INTJ's
complain about the same thing LOL

Sure, validate being overly critical, cold, unable to monitor your input, unrestrained in your communication. You
may be this way, but you don't have to stay that way. It's not a matter of changing you, but making yourself a
better you, with real friends who like you and want to be with you.

I love reading the comments here! Yay for like minded people! I also love how everyone is correcting each others word and
grammar usage, and qualifying all their statements.... and no one is getting angry about it. INTP's rule!

Well that, just about, explains everything. Now, I need to know more. Is this an inherited trait or is it due to some event in
childhood? #INTP is now the new flavor word of the month for me

I wasn't always this way, but think being married to an emotionally driven and "weak" person for 26 years
caused me to change and not care for the emotional b.s.

Susan Miller Mast I'm told that your "type" can change over time but not much based on your personal
interactions. But I've always hovered between INTP or INTJ myself.

I dont understand i took this test twice and i came up as INTP but i don't feel
like one yeh i hate being perceived as common but i dont particularly care
much for punctuation or grammar if you dont know what im writing im just
going to think your stupid simple as im not that cold when it comes to
conversation and i dont tell white lies to not hurt somones feelings merely to
avoid the drama that comes with it i realize i make friends easy but they never
really go deep at least till recently where i have made an effort because ive
decided friends are most likely important in life. ive recently started changing
the way i act since before i was laid back mostly due to lack of motivation the
things i generally think about are out of reach at this moment of time so i

I have to laugh while reading through the comments here. I am convinced

that the world knows me better. Nice to meet my fellow INTPs.

I entirely disagree with the assertion that "there's nothing they'd be more
unhappy about than being 'common'." Commonality has no qualitative value.
Assuming that the typical INTP believes an INTP personality to be a good
thing, I can see no reason why they would wish it to be limited to 3% of the
population (which is a questionable statistic, to be sure). Given the statement
that "INTPs are quite relaxed and friendly when they are with people they
know, or who share their interests," it would seem as though an abundance
of INTPs would be a cause of joy.

This is pretty accurate, but I don't agree with the "their friends won't nd a
bedrock of emotional support in them" part.
