Why router accepts ARP broadcast sent...

Why router accepts ARP broadcast sent towards the default-gateway? Oct 30, 2013 2:29 AM
Router drops BROADCAST and ARP is a broadcast. In a local network, if the ARP broadcast is sent towards
a default-gateway, then WHY router accepts this ARP and provide its interface(i.e.connected towards local
network end) MAC address to be filled into the ARP table when it's supposed to drop it?

Hi Chandra,

Router doesn't allow Broadcast means, it will not allow Broadcast Packets from One interface to the other but
it will receive the broadcast in a Broadcast domain and tries to process it if its valid one like ARP request is
Broadcast. Moreover proxy arp is enable by default in all the Cisco Routers. If you want you can disable it.
Please check this why proxy arp needs to be disabled in the below link.

Hope this clarifies your doubt. Please let me know if you have further questions

Kalai
