 GLORY WELFARE CENTRE

Self-reliance is an important quality to instill. Pakiam

Durai learnt this the hard way when she found herself all
alone. She found out the courage to look for a job and earn
enough to carry on. She realized that they were many people
out there like her; people who suddenly found themselves all
alone with no help.

After many years of working and saving, she decided to

open Glory Welfare Centre to help people overcome difficult
periods in their life. Later, with donations from corporations
and the public, Pakiam was able to take in more women in
need.

The main purpose of the centre is to help young women

earn a living. Many do not have the financial means to further
their studies so gaining a skill is essential to be self-reliant.
Therefore, the centre provides skills training in tailoring,
cooking, hairstyling and beauty care.

Pakiam believes these practical skills can open up

business for these women. Once they have completed their
skills training,these women are given on-the-job training in
their chosen trade.
