Baggett Elementary: Camp Success

Aayushi P.

I worked at Baggett Elementary for the Camp Success Program. My mentor was Ms. Dana Booker. My primary

duties were to assist the children with their homework, supervise them during one of their extracurricular activities

(i.e. dancing, acting, etc.), and to make a video with Sharon Flores to promote Camp Success. I realized that I love

kids, but I prefer not to work with them. I do not have the patience to work with them but this internship has

increased my level of patience. From this experience I have learned that children can easily be influenced by others

around them and they can get easily persuaded to do something. I also realized that my internship may not relate to

my career choice, but that doesnt mean it cant help me with my career choice. I used my school laptop to make the

video to promote Camp Success, which helped me increase my knowledge of Premiere Adobe. Overall I have

gained a lot from this experience, but I would like to have a Senior Capstone Experience in the field of my career

choice.

Developing Pre-Manipulation Formatting Protocols

Abinav R.

Over the course of 10 weeks, I worked with Dr. Cengiz Gnay at the Georgia Gwinnett College in

Lawrenceville. Dr. Gnay works as a professor in the School of Information Technology. During my internship,

I assisted Dr. Gnay with his research project which combined his professional subject expertise with his

passion for neurobiology. While I received guidance, direction, and goals from my mentor, much of my duties

were left to self-direction. I was generally tasked with researching neurobiological systems and the most recent

advances in the computer simulation of said systems. Later in the project, Dr. Gnay and I worked with raw,

empirical data and worked with the data to produce 3D viewing models. Through my internship, I handled the

manipulation of neuronal data, eventually coming to develop novel pre-manipulation formatting protocols.

These protocols enabled us to automate the formatting process and directly convert the raw data we received to

data capable of being processed by highly specialized interfaces such as NEURON and neuroConstruct. I gained

a rich and informative experience in my field of interest, computational science, and I hope to apply my findings

in future work.
An Introductory Experience to Fashion and Project Management

Alexis O.

I performed my Junior Fellowship Experience at the Lawrenceville branch of the Boys and Girls Club. My mentor

was Mr. Julian Smart-Rimple, the Director of Education. Over the course of my internship, I was tasked with

managing and overseeing my own fashion program. That experience, although arduous and stressful, aided in my

development as a leader. I was able to instruct young ladies as they pursued their passions in art and fashion.

Managing the program also came with some freedom in which I could plan lessons and meetings accordingly. This

experience introduced me to the basics of an educational occupation and an introduction to business management.

Additionally, I learned how to create interpersonal relationships with my coworkers in order to create an uplifting

work environment. Furthermore, I was able to develop an important personality trait, patience. Patience, I have

learned, is the most important trait when working with children. I learned the importance of not dismissing the

children but actually listening to them. Moreover, I acquired the basics of office management such as operating the

copying machine, creating calendars and schedules, etc. I enjoyed my experience and learned a plethora of new

skills while developing long-lasting connections and relationships.

Working at EiS Tech

Amrita N.

I had the opportunity to conduct my internship at EiS Technologies this fall semester. At EiS I was

fortunate to have three amazing mentors; their names are Mr. Naveen Miglani, Mr. Alex Ringold, and Zach

Batastini. My mentors gave me two projects to work on during my time at their office. The first project was to

understand the basics of Adobe Photoshop and to create a banner that the company could post on its social media

platforms. This understanding of Photoshop is one of the hard skills I want to attain, and I did. My second task was

to use Adobe Premier to put a video together. While I did not complete the video project because of hardware issues,

time restrictions, and software difficulties, I still learned some of the key techniques in Premier. I plan to finish the

project on my own time to advance my skills. My mentors also gave me marketing lessons to implement in my work

in order to try and make the banner more appealing for potential customers. All in all, this experience has taught me

important digital media and marketing lessons.

Maybe Graphic Design Isnt for Me

Angi H.

I worked at GSMSTs Pi Supplies (the school store) as the creative director. My mentor was Ms. Bennett, the book

keeper. With her guidance, my team and I were able exact the changes we wanted. Contrary to what I planned to be

working on full time, I had new projects assigned. I storyboarded, directed, and edited our store commercial that aired

on the announcements. I also redesigned the old car sticker and created a button for GSMSTs 10th anniversary. I plan

to use the button design concept for future merchandise. Along the way, STUCO commissioned me to develop a Class

vs Class basketball shirt. I was able to widen my technical artistic eye for design through research and application. I

also cooperated and brainstormed with an ambitious team. For the designs, I switched between Paint Tool SAI and

Adobe Photoshop where I learned how to manipulate text better. To edit the video, I used Adobe Premiere and my

cell phone to film it. I used my resources to their full potential. Though graphic design is not a particular interest for

me anymore, I see it as a creative challenge that will help me get ready for my future.

Designing a Website for Student Council

Bryan G.

I interned with GSMSTs Student Council under the supervision of Ms. Nicole DAntonio, one of the advisors of the

organization. Tasked with designing a website for Student Council, I learned how to use Weebly, a website hosting

service, and HTML and CSS, two programming languages that are commonly used to develop webpages. Besides

just web development, I dabbled in the world of web design as I used Canva to create graphics and enhance the

overall design of the site. Part of the website was devoted to the councils meeting minutes; I learned effective

public-relations stylized writing in order to write those minutes and properly communicate with the student body,

who would be reading them. I plan to present what Ive learned about web development and design as its applicable

to student councils at the annual Georgia Association of Student Councils Convention next semester. In anticipation

for that conference, Ill be maintaining and updating the website and writing a handbook on how to use Weebly to

design a Student Council website.

Baggett: Helping to the Max

Caleb R.

For my Junior Fellowship Experience, I worked at Baggett Elementary with my mentor Lucas Findlay. I assisted the

students in their Planeteer Club with their game design when they needed it. I was tasked to stay ahead of them and

their different activities so that when they ask I would know what to do. I was also supposed to give them their little

sticker rewards for completing each activity. I worked on my problem solving skills, communication skills and

programming. To program, the club utilized Scratch to complete each task, so I also utilized Scratch to stay ahead. I

also went to Discovery Night at the school where I stayed in Mr. Findlays room and played with the magnetic

shapes with the kids that came by while two of the seniors that were with me for my Junior Fellowship Experience

and their Senior Capstone Experience set up a robot to entertain the people walking through the room. All in all, it

was a beneficial experience that I enjoyed and I am grateful to have had this experience.

My Animation Experience at Georgia Gwinnett College

Carmichael A.

During my Junior Fellowship Experience, I have worked for my mentor, Dr. Cengiz Gunay, at Georgia Gwinnett

College. Throughout my experience I had to figure out how to use several different software such as Amira and

Blender. Using these software, I created a model of a neuron from thousands of data points. To show off the neuron,

Dr. Gunay had me animate a camera in 3ds max around the neuron to see every inch of the neuron. I have learned

how to code in the program Amira and build objects in Blender. I have also learned how to communicate better with

my mentor by using several different apps to exchange ideas and questions, so that there was no confusion. Overall

my Junior Fellowship Experience was a really influential. I have decided not to follow my familys footsteps in the

medical field and make my own path with a degree in a more technological study.
Networking and Coding at CISCO

Chris M.

For my Fall 2016 Junior Fellowship Experience, I interned at the local CISCO offices, formerly part of Scientific

Atlanta, under Kevin Murphy, a veteran of both companies in the networking department. My tasks at CISCO

involved attending a heavily accelerated course in basic networking, including coding languages such as Python and

JavaScript, a plethora of shadowing opportunities, in which I directly observed the trials and tribulations of working

in network at CISCO, and involvement in basic, low-level troubleshooting for certain servers. During my time at

CISCO, I added foundational skills in coding, networking, and even corporate etiquette to my repertoire, largely

through trial and error in all cases. While improving my skillset, I also came to use unique software, including

Putty, the Remote Desktop Interface, mRemoteNG, Notepad++, JetBrains PyCharm, and other similar applications

used in coding and scriptwriting. The skills I was required to have and the work I was required to do educated me

about the basic expectations of a corporate environment, as well as the nature and amount of work one could expect

to have.

The Life as a Software Support Consultant at NCR

Donovan C.
For the fall semester, my Junior Fellowship Experience consisted of work at NCR or the National Cash Registry

Company located in Duluth, Georgia. My mentor was Ms. Schilleci, she works as an Associate Consultant with the

Software Support team in the Human Resources department. While I was there, my primary responsibilities were

making web pages through Confluence which is an NCR website. There, I logged software information about various

banks, nationally and internationally. Once I completed developing the web pages, I transitioned to a new field of

work and began to talk with the CSAs (Customer Support Advocate) for the specific banks I worked on. I would detail

them on the work I did and the changes and updates I made to their Confluence pages. Lastly, I made four videos for

one of my mentors co-workers, Sue. The video was designed to be displayed to national and other NCR facilities

across the globe promoting their Get Fit challenge that they were participating in. I learned interpersonal

communication and I utilized a software tool called Adobe Premiere for the videos. In conclusion, I plan to work there

next year for my Senior Capstone Experience.

Teaching Music Technology at GSMST

Elias G.

For my JFE, I worked on the GSMST campus in the music technology classroom as a teachers assistant and worked

on my personal album to be released on Wednesday, April 19, 2017. What made my JFE unique is that I had the

opportunity to be placed into the second period music technology class, rather than only having seventh period to

work. While in the classroom, my main duties were working with the 15 beginners level students on learning how to

use the new programs and working with the students in the studio and on studio equipment in the classroom so they

could enhance their music. In addition, I also worked closely with my mentor to record the orchestra, band, and

chorus concerts in October. I learned many things but the most notably of them was learning how to manipulate

audio in a program called Audacity. In addition, I also enhanced my communication and teaching skills while

working with students. My JFE experience was an incredible experience where I got to surround myself with many

people who shared similar interests as myself.

The Independent Work Environment of My Dreams

Izik M.

I worked under Mr. Jason Boyette, the exuberant animation teacher of The Gwinnett School of Mathematics,

Science, and Technology. At the internship, I decided that I would pursue a somewhat independent path in which I

decided what needed to be accomplished as long as the project was completed in time. Specifically, I worked on

creating 3D models and animations, programs, and textures for a game which would feature a student as the

playable character where the goal was to balance work and play to maximize grades. I learned a variety of technical

skills in each of these areas such as the best way to make grass and how to create better textures for objects.

Because of the independent nature of my internship, I was able to try a self-directed workflow which was new to me

as classes rarely provided schedules like this. The electronic tools which I utilized for my game was 3DS Max,

Unity, and Adobe Photoshop for modelling, programming, and texturing respectively. This internship taught me

that I value my independence in the work environment and would like a career that allows for said independence.
My Experience Interning for the National Art Honor Society at GSMST

Jonathan G.

For the past nine weeks, I have been able to intern for the National Art Honor Society here at GSMST under the

guidance of my mentor, who also happens to be GSMSTs art teacher, Ms. Jennifer Prince. My responsibilities

ranged from sending basic e-mails to heading organization meetings and activities, but three specific duties of mine

included: organizing GSMSTs annual Festival of Trees, organizing our honor societys induction ceremony, and

sending any necessary e-mails. From this internship, I was able to learn interpersonal skills, financial skills, and

general leadership skills. Throughout the experience, I utilized previously known programs such as Google Drive

and its accessory programs. During my internship, I was able to attend our induction night, as well as a meeting with

our principal, Mr. Bray, which were both an honor and special experiences to me. Overall, my JFE experience was

extremely positive, and I was able to learn important skills and discover a potential career in the future.

Teaching Assistant Internship at Kids4Codin

Kasandra R.

During the fall of 2016 I was given the exciting opportunity to complete my Junior Fellowship Experience at

Kids4Coding as a Teachers Assistant. I specifically interned at the main learning center that Kids4Coding has

which is located in Roswell, Georgia, alongside my mentors Denise Detamore and AnnMarie Laramee. Most of the

sessions that are offered during the school year occur on Saturdays, therefore I interned once a week. Throughout

this experience, I had three primary responsibilities as a teachers assistant: reinforce what the teacher had

previously taught, help fabricate the students own video games, simulations, and/or designs into a project that they

would be proud of, and set up the classrooms according to the class that would be in session next, for example, turn

on the laptops, set them up on each desk, and connect their mice and headphones for the next interactive

keyboarding class. Principle learning skills that I have learned, both hard and soft, include learning how to be

more familiar with the software Java and the gaming software Kodu, as well as learning how to communicate ideas

with children in a manner in which will help enhance their motivation.

Pis Supplies School Store
Kevin H.
I worked at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology building in the school store called Pis

supplies. My mentor is Mrs. Bennet who is the head of the Pis supplies division. One of my primary duties was to

be in charge of the cash register where I basically record customer sales and make transactions for each payment

made. Another one of my responsibilities was to troubleshoot system issues such as financial problems or frequent

glitches that can happen in payment submissions. I was also able to help film and develop advertisement videos

served to appeal the students at GSMST to purchase our products. In fact, one of my main accomplishments at this

internship was having the opportunity to create a 1-minute film that presented the supplies and clothes at the store.

As a result of this internship, I learned to make transactions to customer payments as well as understand the

advertisement behind many businesses. The only equipment and hardware I acquired was a laptop and adobe

premiere. My internship did not contain any training sessions or special events that I had to attend. My overall

experience with this internship has been great, and I got to learn many new things involved in finance and

marketing.
Internship Experience at Baggett Elementary School

Laura J.

For my Junior Fellowship Experience, I was located at Baggett Elementary Schools Camp Success and

Meridian Pointe after school programs. My mentor and advisor, Dana Booker, assisted me with arranging my

personalized experience, which allowed me to view both the group and individual aspects of early childhood

education. My responsibilities included overseeing students in recreational activities such as dance and martial

arts as well as assisting students academically with fact fluency studies, homework help, and individual tutoring.

My job there introduced me for the first time to using walkie-talkies for long-distance communication; I used

them to notify student check-outs and assist in extra-curricular events such as Literacy and STEAM night at the

school. From my experience, I practiced communication with those younger than you, leadership skills,

patience, the use of effective incentives, and flexibility when it comes to uncertainty of plans. I went through the

process of getting to know my students to successfully instruct them to eventually become dependable and

trustworthy to students both academically and oftentimes emotionally. Being able to add this internship to my

educational background gives me a greater respect for early childhood education as well as curiosity to explore

the career further in future internships.

My Internship at Core Technologies

Noah H.

My Fall JFE took place at Core Technologies located in Norcross. My mentor was Rob Smith, a GSMST alumni

who works in the Networking department at Core. Some of my duties across the internship included confirming

whether or not refurbished laptops were working, restoring C-grade laptops to working condition or dismantle C-

grade laptops for parts, and updating channel descriptions of products in Channeladvisor. Over the course of the

experience, I learned how to cooperate with others in a working environment, how to refurbish a computer from

beginning to finish, and how to run a social media account for a company. I had to utilize my technical skills and

knowledge from prior experiences to repair and upgrade laptops. Overall, I had a really joyful experience at Core

and can not wait for my Senior Capstone Experience. In the future, due to my JFE, I plan on pursuing a career that

involves working with computer hardware or software and I plan on attempting to find a senior internship similar to

my JFE.
Video Making for Baggetts Spanish Students

Nodirbek G.

My experience took place at Baggett Elementary with Sr. Uriz, a Spanish teacher, and it involved a heavy use of

various computer programs to animate roughly six seconds of a specific concrete item. It mainly took place in Mr.

Boyettes classroom since he is the 3D Animation instructor and a secondary mentor for my JFE. My main

instructor was Sr. Uriz, and he was the one that gave me a list of the concrete items I had to animate. I completed

four animations in total by compiling numerous frames and enhancing a few skills along the way. I primarily used

Autodesks 3DS Max with the help of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, and Microsoft Paint. In conclusion, I

gained knowledge on a few new things, but it mostly orbited around me polishing up some skills I learned in the

beginning of my high school career, such as time management and communication skills. I see myself using 3DS

Max in the future because I am very interested in architecture; knowing how to effectively use the program can

greatly aid the engineering process of this career.

Animating at Bagett Elementary School

Ryan C.

I worked at Bagette Elementary School with Lucas Findlay For my internship, animating short films of the

current area of study of the students in the Science program. My work was concentrated primarily in the 4th

grade science program, so I created an ecosystem to demonstrate the ecosystem and food web vocab words to

them. Using the Vocab words as a guide, I created models like eagles and trees to show the various interactions

inside the ecosystem. I also made a really beautiful background scene to wow the kids and make them interested

in the content area (I made a river). In this internship I increased my knowledge of the 3ds max animation

program, my time management skills, and my ability to communicate with people that work above me. My time

management and communication skills were put to the test on the daily because me and Christian worked almost

entirely separate from Mr. Findlay. In conclusion my JFE was a learning experience and it showed me that I still

have a long ways to go before Im ready to work in the real world.

Interning with 50 Children and Genuinely Enjoying It

Sharon F.

I had the opportunity to serve as an intern to my mentor Ms. Booker, a guidance counselor at Baggett Elementary

School. During the orientation meeting, it was initially planned for my internship to be working alongside my

mentor as a counselor for a group of assigned students, but after realizing several schedule conflicts, I was

introduced to the opportunity of completing my internship with an afterschool program, Camp Success, at the

school. I would continue as a mentor, but this time to a much larger group of students. Personally, my three main

responsibilities were to collaborated with the students on completing their homework assignments, maintain

communication between the teachers of the program and the parents of the students (especially those who spoke

only Spanish) and assist Ms. Edwards in signing out the students. I was also specifically assigned to develop poster

boards that advised parents the specific dates the program would be closed and created lesson plans to teach Spanish

to the students. I mainly worked with the younger students, those in K-2nd grade, and from them I learned both the

physical capabilities and interpersonal skills needed to work with various types of children.

My JFE in Digital Design and Development

Shayan D.

I interned at Dogwood Web Design and Development for my JFE. My mentors were Jill Murphy and Michelle

Hilton. One of my duties was to make a website from scratch for my fathers business. I had to create this website

using Adobe Muse, a program which lets the user create a website without coding anything. Another responsibility

was to actually know how to use the Adobe Muse program. Prior to this internship, I did not know how to use

Adobe Muse, and I was responsible for learning how to use this program through a series of web videos. Creating

my dads website using Adobe Muse was my biggest accomplishment. I also learned how to deal with difficult

clients through this internship. I really enjoyed and learned a lot from my internship and my mentors.
The Greatest Pi Experience

Shekinah W.

For my internship, I worked for GSMST at the school store as the Accounting Assistant Manager. The school stores

name is Pi-Supplies and it is run by my mentor Ms. Jenna Bennett. One of my duties at the school store was taking

monthly inventory. Keeping inventory helps us keep up with merchandise and allows us to make sure that the items

sold is compensated with the amount of money collected. I also Balanced Cash and Checks and filled out the Daily

Sales Reports or the RMC forms. Another one of my responsibilities included working with social media such as

Instagram and checking the school store email accordingly. Something that I learned during this experience is how

to collaborate with others and how communication is key. Many times if I did not communicate with my team then

it would result in confusion and extra work and it is better to work smarter not harder. I also learned how to fill out a

RMC form using Microsoft Excel and how to use the Refine Point of Sale System. One special event I attended for

my experience was Curriculum night. I was tasked with operation of the cash register and point of sale system. In

conclusion, I greatly enjoyed this experience and would do it again if I had the opportunity.
